DV Victim to Select Board: Brennan an “Empathetic Protector”

Published on

Dear Members of the Hopkinton Select Board,

As a Hopkinton resident and a victim of domestic violence, I approach you today with a request for confidentiality regarding this letter and my identity, particularly to protect my child, a student in our community. The fear and anxiety that accompany speaking up as a victim are profound, and until now, I’ve remained nearly silent outside of speaking to law enforcement and immediate family. This situation, however, demands that I use my voice, despite the personal risks involved.

Sgt. Tim Brennan was a key figure in the aftermath of my own experiences. Although not the first responder to my initial incident, he played a crucial role in subsequent events. His approach – marked by genuine care, empathy, and professionalism – provided not only a sense of security but also a semblance of hope in dark times. His commitment to the community and initiatives like his self-protection class for women are testaments to his dedication.

The current discourse surrounding Sgt. Brennan’s situation is complex and, in my view, lacks sufficient consideration of the victim’s perspective. The reluctance of victims to come forward, as seen in this case, adds layers of complexity to public perception. It’s crucial to understand that each victim’s experience and timing in dealing with their trauma are unique and deeply personal. The victim in this case was not ready to come forward at the time of the incident, a decision that should not be overlooked or undervalued in evaluating Sgt. Brennan’s conduct.

As you deliberate his future, I implore you to consider the nuanced and often misunderstood dynamics of these types of crimes. The decision before you is not just about one individual but about our community’s ability to understand, respect, and protect those who have endured such trauma.

I am gravely concerned that Sgt. Brennan’s absence will weaken the trust and safety we, especially victims like me, have in our community. His understanding and humane approach to law enforcement have been invaluable, and I believe our community is stronger with him protecting it.

In closing, I ask that you view this situation through the lens of those who have suffered in silence, understanding the courage it takes to speak up, and the importance of having empathetic protectors like Sgt. Brennan.

Sincerely,

A Hopkinton resident
