Trendel to Select Board: I Trust Tim Brennan

Dear Members of the Select Board:

I am writing in support of Office Tim Brennan and urge your leniency in your review of his case. While acknowledging his policy violation, the complexities of the situation should be considered. I and many others can relate to the predicament he was in when the victim came forward but was unwilling to cooperate. Yet the decision you make is not just about policy adherence, but about whether the violation warrants ruining his career. As you review the case, I ask that you consider the following:

Trust – Do you trust Tim Brennan? I do… and so do countless others. The victim trusted Tim and he supported her throughout a very challenging situation, always keeping his word to her. Trust is foundational to strong police/community partnership, and Tim is the kind of person that builds it.

Character – In the years that I have known Tim, he has always conducted himself to the highest of standards. He is considerate, thoughtful, and compassionate.

Community – Most, if not all of you have volunteered in some capacity with Tim, either through Scouts, the Growth Study Committee, or a myriad of other activities that Tim has supported over the years. Tim’s extensive community service should be weighed in his favor.

Tim has committed both his professional and personal life to Hopkinton and his positive impact is evident in talking to anyone that knows him. I support his reinstatement to the Hopkinton Police Force with the minimum disciplinary action.

Regards,

Gary Trendel, 31 Chamberlain Street

  1. Well said, Gary Trendel. I too, support Tim Brennan.

Sergeant Brennan committed an administrative policy violation, that’s it! He took a stance against another cop, his boss Jay Porter. And that took courage. A lot of courage.

He never covered up for Jay Porter, nor did he minimize the harm that Jay Porter inflicted on the victim. To think that this town has portrayed Sergeant Brennan to be nearly as bad a Jay Porter, a child abuser, is absolutely shameful! In addition, it’s an enormous waste of our (OUR!) taxpayer money.

    Reinstate Tim Brennan.

      • The difference is Brennan has admitted he is guilty of these violations, while Porter has adamantly denied the allegations and should be presumed innocent until proven guilty

  2. Clearly the town is looking for someone to blame . Unfortunately for them they miscalculated the support and respect officer Brennan has in the community. The truth will come out and the town officials that didn’t support this good man will need to resign.

  3. Well said! I too support Tim Brennan and the town should be ashamed of what they are doing to a good man dedicated to his community.

  4. I am proud to say I am a friend of Tim Brennan. Gary Trendel`s letter says it all for me. Only someone unaware of all the details of this unfortunate situation, or who inherently loves to see policemen denigrated, would continue to besmirch the reputation of a solidly good man and law enforcement officer. With fervent sincerity, Rob Phipps [non-resident/taxpayer]

  5. I am writing in favor of returning Officer Brennan to the job he has performed for 24 years, honorably and with an unblemished record. He admitted his wrong doing and rather than be disciplined and returned to his job, he has been made out to be a criminal like Porter. Shame on the town of Hopkinton for railroading my brother and making a scapegoat of him in a situation where he clearly had the victim’s trust and acted in her best interest. It’s time the town put Tim back to work and allow himself and his family to move beyond this public fiasco and humiliation.
