Here is our updated Letters to the Editor and Comment policies. We want to ensure that conversations in our community remain respectful and productive for everyone.
How to Submit
Email your letter to editor@hopnews.com with “Letter to the Editor” or “LTE” in the subject line. Please include:
- Your full name (anonymity allowed)
- Town of residence
- Phone number and email for verification — neither will be published
What We Welcome
- Commentary on local issues, policies, and events
- Questions about how municipal operations work
- Constructive criticism of public officials’ actions or decisions
- Advocacy for community positions
What We Won’t Publish (Keep it About Actions, not People)
- Personal attacks, name-calling, or harassment
- Threats, profanity, or defamatory statements
- Speculation about anyone’s health, family, or private life
- Misinformation or deliberate falsehoods
- Vague complaints without reference to specific meetings, votes, or actions
- Repeated letters with the same argument
- Commercial advertising
Length & Editing
- Keep letters under 800 words
- We may edit for length, clarity, libel, or accuracy
- We’ll contact you before publishing if significant changes are needed
Fact-Checking
Please provide sources for any factual claims. Letters with unverifiable assertions won’t be published.
Reader Comments
We welcome public comments! All public comments are moderated and must meet the standards described above. We remove personal attacks, off-topic remarks, abusive language, and misinformation — and will block repeat offenders. If a discussion turns uncivil, we’ll close comments.
