HOPKINTON – Grace K. (McCarthy) Melvin, 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, in Framingham after a period of declining health. She was the loving wife of the late Curtis D. Melvin for 56 years. Born in Marlborough, she was the daughter of the late Francis J. and Grace C. (Shea) McCarthy.
Grace grew up in Hudson, graduating from St. Michael’s Academy in 1951 and Framingham State College in 1956. She lived in Framingham for 25 years, where she taught first grade at Memorial School and served as a volunteer librarian and substitute teacher at Juniper Hill School. She was a communicant and a teacher in the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine at St. George’s Parish.
Grace and Curtis moved to Hopkinton in 1982, where they were members of St. John’s Parish and Grace was active with the Hopkinton Senior Center until 2021. She spent her final years at New Horizons in Marlborough and St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham.
Blessed with an excellent sense of humor, Grace valued her family and enjoyed working with children. She liked to socialize, play cards, and travel with her family and friends, and was a regular at The Spoon in Hopkinton.
Keenly aware of current events, she often read two or three newspapers a day. She supported her children’s and grandchildren’s musical and athletic events in Framingham, Marlborough, and Westborough. She was a lifelong Boston Celtics fan.
Grace leaves her sons, Richard K. and wife Julie of Charlestown, RI, and Keith F. and wife Zita of Newburyport; her grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Scott Lutterbie, Matthew and wife Krista Melvin, Christopher Melvin, and Stephanie and husband Stan Beck; her great-grandchildren, Amelia and Rachel Lutterbie; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Francis J. McCarthy, Jr.
Calling hours will be held Friday, May 1, 2026, from 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church Street, Hopkinton. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 20 Church Street, Hopkinton. Burial will follow in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Hopkinton.
