The Hopkinton Area Land Trust wishes to congratulate James Kayan, winner of the $2,000 HALT Scholarship for 2024. James will be attending the University of Maine in Orono, where he plans to study forestry.

James’ interest in forestry was strengthened when he went last summer to the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico, and met other young men who were interested in forestry. James has many other interests besides camping and activities associated with becoming an Eagle Scout, including Art Club, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Swimming and Lifeguarding, Ultimate Frisbee, Wrestling, and even Video Games.

The Board of Directors wishes James a successful collegiate career and looks forward to the time when James can advise HALT on how better to maintain our forests and fields in Hopkinton.

The Hopkinton Area Land Trust was founded in 1995 by a group of five at Dave Goldman’s kitchen table, as a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving open space in Hopkinton and surrounding towns. It began with a vision to protect open space, meet the requests of the townspeople for more recreational areas, and maintain the quality of life in Hopkinton. Since its inception HALT has been managed by a small board of 6-9 volunteer directors who have been very active in acquiring and maintaining open space in the town.
