Fitzpatrick wins $10k Scholarship from American Legion

Since its inception, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship has been awarded to more than 2,265 applicants

The American Legion named Owen Fitzpatrick of Hopkinton as one of 10 recipients of the Samsung American Legion Scholarship.

More than 4,600 high school juniors from across the nation applied for the award, which includes a $10,000 scholarship for undergraduate expenses and a trip to Washington, D.C. to be recognized.

Since 1996, The American Legion has administered the scholarship, which is funded by electronics giant Samsung in tribute to U.S. veterans and families of those who served
during the Korean War. Scholars must be direct descendants of wartime veterans. Fitzpatrick’s great grandfather served in the Navy during World War II, and his grandfather served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

Applicants for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship must first be named state finalists from their respective American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State programs. The American Legion Committee on Youth Education then selects 10 applicants who have excelled academically and served their communities.

In Washington, D.C., Fitzpatrick will tour the monuments, visit the Samsung Solutions Center, and join their American Legion state delegations to meet with members of
Congress and discuss veteran-related legislation.

With the help of the scholarship, Fitzpatrick plans to attend Bates College in the fall and study art history.
