John Charles Macko, 80, of Hopkinton, died peacefully at his home on December 17, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Lynn, MA on March 14, 1943.

John spent his early years growing up in Beverly and received an engineering degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and later received a master’s degree from Trinity College in Hartford, CT. He had a 20-year career in engineering and business at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. At the age of 45, John became a registered nurse and had a 22-year career as a med surg nurse at Framingham Union Hospital, retiring from nursing in 2011. He lived in Framingham for 30 years, moving to Hopkinton in 2016. John loved to travel, sail, ski, and garden, and was an avid reader, especially history; but his favorite activity was being an amazing uncle to all his nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. He preferred to always be called “Uncle John” by everyone. John had a special bond with his men’s group for 33 years.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Ann of 40 years, his sister Marianne (Wally) Shwert of Framingham, and his brother Peter (Nan) Macko of Vista, CA, 10 nieces and nephews, and 35 grandnieces and grandnephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave, Boston, MA, 02215. Private family arrangements are under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton,
