According to his social media profile, Mr. Sweatt has long struggled with depression. As early as 2014, Mr. Sweat wrote to his Facebook followers “Suicide, a crime of loneliness”, and then reshared the post in August of 2022.

Also in 2022, Mr. Sweatt shared a post that read “I am trying to make sense of this war inside my head”, which elicited supportive comments from his friends.

Years earlier, in 2015, Sweatt shared this post with several friends.

And most recently, on March 17, 2023, Sweatt wrote:

“There are a lot of unknowns in this situation,” said Abbie Rosenberg, Founder and Executive Director of the Mental Health Collaborative, a Hopkinton organization that seeks to provide education, decreased stigma, and through their programs, show people when and where to get professional help.

“Whether it be due to stigma or lack of access to help, oftentimes mental illnesses go untreated. We know that there is a 8-11 year gap in the average time between the onset of someone having initial symptoms and treatment,” said Rosenberg.

“When left untreated, mental illness can have devastating consequences for themselves and those around them. But with treatment, they can live productive and purposeful lives.”
