We are an independent, locally owned digital news publication serving Hopkinton, Massachusetts. Our goal is to provide accurate, fair, and useful reporting about the community we call home. Our editorial standards and procedures are outlined below.
These policies explain how we approach our journalism, correct mistakes, work with sources, and separate editorial decisions from commercial interests.
Accuracy and Fairness
Accuracy comes first. We aim to verify names, dates, quotations and other factual information before publication. Whenever possible, we rely on original documents, public records, meeting recordings and people with direct knowledge of the subject.
We seek relevant perspectives when reporting on disagreements or contested issues. Fairness does not require giving equal weight to information that is demonstrably false or unsupported by credible evidence.
Headlines, photographs and social media posts should accurately reflect the underlying article. We do not knowingly publish misleading or fabricated information.
Independence
HopNews makes editorial decisions based on news value, community interest and the available facts.
Advertisers, sponsors, donors and other financial supporters do not receive favorable news coverage or control over editorial decisions. Purchasing an advertisement does not guarantee coverage. Declining to advertise does not result in negative coverage.
HopNews has no political affiliation. We do not endorse political candidates in our news reporting. Opinion pieces, columns and letters represent the views of their authors unless otherwise stated.
Ownership and Funding
HopNews is published by Arch Publishing, which is owned by Editor-in-Chief Paula Garland. HopNews has no corporate owner or outside political affiliation.
Our work is supported through advertising, sponsorships, reader support, and other publication-related revenue. Financial support does not give a person or organization influence over independent news coverage.
Advertising and Sponsored Content
Advertisements are visually separated from editorial content whenever practical.
Paid articles and other sponsored material are clearly labeled as “Sponsored,” “Paid Content,” or with similar language readers can easily understand. HopNews retains the right to edit, reject or remove sponsored material that does not meet our standards.
Sponsors may be identified in connection with a section, newsletter, event or special feature. Sponsorship does not give the sponsor authority over unrelated editorial coverage.
Conflicts of Interest
Because HopNews covers a close-knit community, our editors and contributors may know people involved in the stories we report. Personal familiarity alone does not prevent coverage.
We disclose relationships or interests when they could reasonably affect—or appear to affect—the fairness of an article. When appropriate and practical, a journalist may step away from an assignment involving a significant conflict.
Sources and Attribution
HopNews generally identifies the people and organizations providing information. We attribute information to documents, public officials, organizations and other sources when attribution helps readers evaluate its reliability.
We may grant anonymity when a source has credible information, could face a meaningful risk by being identified and cannot reasonably provide the information on the record. The editor must know the source’s identity. Anonymous sources are not permitted to use HopNews for personal attacks, political manipulation, or unsupported allegations.
We do not allow sources to approve completed articles before publication. We may confirm quotations, technical details or specific facts when doing so improves accuracy.
Corrections and Updates
HopNews corrects factual errors as promptly and transparently as possible.
Substantive corrections will generally include a note explaining what was changed. Significant new information added after publication may be identified as an update. Minor spelling, punctuation, formatting, or grammatical changes may be made without a correction notice when they do not alter the article’s meaning.
Readers who believe an article contains an error should email editor@hopnews.com or call 508-494-5739. Please identify the article, the information believed to be incorrect, and any supporting documentation.
A disagreement with the framing or conclusions of an accurately reported article does not necessarily require a correction. However, HopNews will review all good-faith correction requests.
Opinion, Letters and Community Submissions
News reporting is kept separate from opinion content. Letters to the editor, guest columns and commentary are labeled accordingly.
Opinions belong to the named author and do not necessarily represent the views of HopNews. Submissions may be edited for length, clarity, grammar, accuracy and civility. We may reject content containing knowingly false claims, personal attacks, discriminatory language, unsupported allegations or undisclosed commercial promotion.
Material submitted by community organizations or distributed through press releases may be edited, independently reported or clearly attributed to its source.
Artificial Intelligence and Editorial Tools
HopNews may use digital tools, including transcription, research, spelling, grammar and artificial intelligence-assisted tools, to support its work.
These tools are not treated as authoritative sources. A human editor reviews material before publication and remains responsible for its accuracy, fairness and final presentation. Quotations, names, figures and other factual claims must be checked against reliable source material.
Images and Visual Content
Photographs, illustrations and other visual material should accurately represent the subject and context of an article. Photo credits and courtesy acknowledgments are provided when appropriate.
Illustrations, file photographs, altered images and artificial intelligence-generated visuals should be labeled when their nature might not otherwise be clear to readers. We do not use manipulated visuals to mislead readers.
Community Representation
HopNews seeks to reflect the range of people, neighborhoods, experiences and viewpoints within Hopkinton.
We aim to avoid stereotypes and unnecessary references to personal characteristics. Race, ethnicity, religion, gender, disability, age and other personal details are included only when relevant to the story.
We welcome feedback when readers believe important voices or perspectives have been overlooked.
Privacy, Sensitivity and Public Records
Information may be legally available but still requires careful editorial judgment. We consider the public interest, relevance, potential harm and safety of those involved before publishing sensitive personal information.
We exercise additional care when reporting about children, victims of crime, medical matters and people experiencing trauma. Being named in a public document does not automatically mean a person’s identity must appear in an article.
Article Removal
Published articles are part of the public record and generally will not be removed solely because they later become inconvenient or unfavorable to someone mentioned.
HopNews may consider removing or limiting information in exceptional circumstances involving safety, privacy, legal requirements or a compelling lack of public interest. Corrections or updates are generally preferred to deletion.
Reader Feedback and Accountability
We welcome questions, criticism, news tips and suggestions from readers. Feedback helps us improve our reporting and identify stories that need greater attention.
