After much thought, we have made the difficult decision to step away from HopNews.
Those words aren’t easy to write. HopNews has been an important part of our lives for the past two years, and we are incredibly grateful to the readers, advertisers, contributors, and members of the Hopkinton community who have supported us along the way.
But sometimes life has a way of reminding you what matters most.
A Second Chance
On July 14, Walter passed out while driving to work on Interstate 495 after his heart suddenly stopped due to an electrical malfunction.
His car crossed several lanes of morning traffic, went through a guardrail and rolled into the woods. Miraculously, he didn’t hit another vehicle and walked away without serious injuries.
At Milford Regional Medical Center, Walter’s heart stopped again. Doctors identified the problem and implanted a leadless pacemaker. Today, Walter says he feels better than he has in years.
We don’t use the word “miracle” lightly, but it’s difficult for us to describe the experience any other way.
Walter was given a second chance, and the experience gave us both a new perspective on how we want to spend our time together.
That’s why we’ve decided it’s time for us to step away from running HopNews.
We Hope This Isn’t the End of HopNews
While we’re ready for our next chapter, we would love to see HopNews begin one of its own.
HopNews has been part of the Hopkinton community for many years. It has an established name, a loyal local readership, relationships with advertisers and community organizations, years of archived local stories, and—following a complete rebuild—a modern website designed to support the publication moving forward.
Rather than simply seeing all of that disappear, we would like to explore whether there is an individual, organization, entrepreneur, journalist, or local businessperson interested in taking HopNews forward.
Someone else may have a different vision for what HopNews can become.
Maybe that’s an expanded local news organization. Maybe it’s a community-focused digital publication supported by local businesses. Maybe it’s something we haven’t thought of yet.
We’re open to that conversation. If you—or someone you know—might have a serious interest in taking over HopNews, please reach out to us at paula@hopnews.com. We’d be happy to have a confidential conversation about what that could look like.
What Happens Next
For now, HopNews will not be updated; however, it will remain available online, and our archive of stories will remain accessible.
We will be stepping back from the day-to-day demands of operating the publication while we determine whether there is someone interested in carrying HopNews forward.
Our hope is that this isn’t goodbye to HopNews.
It’s simply time for someone else to write the next chapter.
Thank You, Hopkinton
Most of all, we want to thank our readers and advertisers for supporting HopNews. Being part of this community and helping tell its stories has been a difficult, fascinating, and rewarding adventure.
We are also especially grateful to Gordon Multimedia for helping us through the technical challenges we inherited with the website and ultimately rebuilding HopNews from the ground up. Their work gave HopNews a faster, more stable platform and positioned the website for the future.
And we cannot say enough about the team at Milford Regional Medical Center. From the doctors and ICU nurses to everyone else we encountered, the care and kindness shown to Walter and our family will never be forgotten.
Finally, to our friends and family: thank you for the thoughts, prayers, phone calls, check-ins, friendship, love, and support.
Walter received a second chance.
We’re going to make the most of it.
And we’re hopeful that HopNews might get a second chance, too.

Thank you for all your hard work and making HopNews a part of our lives. You will be missed but more importantly enjoy life’s new chapter!
Thank you!

Thank God Walter is doing well. Thank you for doing such a great job with HopNews. I hope this new journey brings you lots of happiness, peace, and better days ahead. ❤️
Thank you Priyanka! We intend to like life to the fullest!
Paula love you and Walter you are good friends thank you for caring on HopNews. Hopkinton has a great school district if no individuals wish to take over I would love to see hopkinton schools take over with a journalism class getting the opinion from the students of Hopkinton that there families are so willing to sacrifice for. A media curriculum for students would increase students involvement in the community.
Nothing is more important than family and loved ones. I’m happy to hear Walter is doing well and making the most of his second chance. I hope you both enjoy this new outlook on life.
Thank you for providing this service to the town, I’m sure it was not easy. Cheers to you both!
I sincerely hope you find a way forward with Hopnews, but I fully understand your decision, having undergone a similar situation as Walter about 16 moths ago, and now also have a pacemaker – but no ar crash. Although I moved from Hopkinton 33 years ago, after 20+ years as a residednt, I have continued to use Hopnews in its many forms as a way to stay in touch with events and old friends. Thank you for building Hopnews to what it is today. I wish you all the very best!
Best of luck to you with the pacemaker. Walter is a new man!
