Meet Pet of the Week: Birdie!

Name and Humble Beginnings

How did Birdy get his name? Is he a bird dog? Is it a golf reference? Can he sing like a bird? Nope. This sweet boy has a little bird-shaped marking on his back.

Birdy is a lucky dog. His pregnant mother was abandoned on a deserted island in the middle of a Georgia river, where she later gave birth. Thankfully, rescuers found Birdy’s mom and her puppies just in time. Birdy and several of his littermates survived and eventually landed in loving homes.

As if the bird on his back weren’t enough, Birdy also has a swan-shaped marking on his leg. It’s only fitting for a dog born on an island surrounded by mallards, loons, and swans.

Opinions

Despite working as a Good Will Ambassador, Birdy can be a bit opinionated. He is not a fan of paper, canes, or sticks. A dog who doesn’t like sticks? In the Birdy house, everyone agrees on one thing: paper is evil.

Party Tricks

Some say this beagle mix has freakishly long legs. His best party trick is to stretch out on the couch—and touch the floor with his front paws.

As a pup, he could launch himself right onto the kitchen counter. He hopped onto the vet’s exam table all by himself. Why? He knows where the treats are kept.

Lemons to Lemonade

Birdy is a firm believer in making the best of a bad situation. His humans once decided it was a good idea to put him in “jail” (the kennel) with nothing but his bed. Birdy disagreed. He turned that bed into a masterpiece of fluffy foam confetti.

His humans say his eyes will melt your soul—even as you’re still finding tiny bits of confetti under the couch.
