What did Hopkinton look like as the United States took shape?
The Hopkinton Historical Society (HHS) has opened enrollment for the upcoming fall session of its acclaimed series, “American History as Told Through the Words of Hopkinton’s Own Citizens.”
How did residents of this small Massachusetts community experience the debates, conflicts, and changes that defined the young nation?
This series picks up where the spring series, Hopkinton in the 1700s, left off. No previous attendance is required, and newcomers are welcome to join the story as it continues.
Six Class Series
The six-class series will trace American history from the drafting of the U.S. Constitution in 1787 through the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848.
The course will focus on the people of Hopkinton and the ways their lives connected to the larger American story. Local experiences can reveal how national events affected ordinary families, communities, and decisions in their own backyards.
Led by Local Historian Chuck Joseph
Joseph brings an engaging and accessible style to the subject. His classes combine historical detail with humor and memorable stories, helping participants see the people behind the names and dates.
After attending the spring session, one participant offered this review:
I thoroughly enjoyed your class. Your passion for American history and how Hopkinton evolved is contagious. I am looking forward to the next class on the 1800s!
Enrollment is limited, and advance registration is required. The course is free for current Hopkinton Historical Society members. The cost for nonmembers is $40.
Classes meet Wednesdays, September 16 through October 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Hopkinton Historical Society, 168 Hayden Rowe Street.
