LTE: Importance of Conduct in School Committee Elections

Dear Editor,

Hopkinton currently faces an uncontested race for two open seats on the Hopkinton School Committee. One of the candidates is Sravana Krishna.

When a race is uncontested, voters have a heightened responsibility to carefully evaluate the public record.

The Hopkinton School Committee oversees curriculum, budgeting, district leadership, and policies affecting every child in town. Hopkinton Public Schools are among the highest performing districts in Massachusetts. They contribute directly to property values, attract families committed to academic excellence, and play a central role in defining our community.

The standard for those overseeing this institution must be high, and public conduct is part of that evaluation.

Public comment history

In the Hopkinton Independent comment thread under “Letter to the Editor: School Committee comment inappropriate,” Sravana Krishna repeatedly described a resident as “obsessive.” He dismissed criticism by suggesting detractors were “triggered.” Those words were not isolated phrases; they appeared multiple times.

Describing a resident as “obsessive” shifts the conversation away from substance and toward personal characterization. Labeling critics as “triggered” minimizes disagreement by framing it as emotional instability rather than a legitimate difference of opinion.

In another thread under “Letter to the Editor: Select Board youth movement questioned,” when concerns were raised about tone, his responses included the repeated refrain, “Please don’t cry … You’re good the way you are … Love ya!” In context, this functioned as dismissal rather than engagement.

When fellow residents explicitly asked for more civil discourse, the response was not recalibration. It was a repetition of the same sarcastic tone.

This matters.

Temperament and fitness for office

School Committee service requires the ability to engage in disagreement without belittling. It requires the discipline to respond to criticism without reducing it to mockery. It requires separating ideas from individuals.

The words “obsessive” and “triggered” are not policy arguments. “Please don’t cry … Love ya!” is not constructive engagement. They reflect a confrontational rather than collaborative style of interaction.

Public comment threads are often the most unfiltered view of temperament. They show how a person behaves when not guided by campaign messaging. They show instinctive responses to dissent.

Additionally, HopNews has restricted Krishna’s access to its social media platforms and online comment sections in accordance with its stated civility and moderation policies.

Editor’s note: I spoke with Mr. Whitaker, and his information is accurate. Shortly after I took over HopNews, Krishna contacted me to complain that he had been blocked from commenting. I was unaware that my predecessor, Peter Thomas, had blocked him. Believing in second chances, I restored his access. Within a month or two, I blocked him again. The final straw was a comment in which he wrote that he was concerned about my mental stability.

HopNews has since tightened its standards for community participation. Namely, commentary on local issues, policies, and events is permitted — and encouraged. Personal attacks, name-calling, harassment, profanity, or defamatory statements are not.

School Committee members must navigate emotionally charged issues involving children, families, and educators. They must respond to criticism from parents who may be frustrated or passionate while maintaining composed, steady leadership.

A Call for Candidates

Based on the documented public record, the pattern of engagement demonstrated does not reflect the level of temperament and restraint expected of someone overseeing one of the most important institutions in town.

An uncontested race does not benefit the community. Residents have until March 30 to collect 50 signatures and place their name on the ballot for the Hopkinton School Committee.

Hopkinton needs new perspectives. It needs individuals with children in the schools and a vested interest in the district’s continued excellence. It needs candidates who understand that leadership is measured not only by policy positions but by conduct.

Future of Hopkinton Public Schools

If you care about the future of Hopkinton Public Schools, consider stepping forward. Bring this race into the contest so that voters can evaluate candidates on their merits and ensure that the standard for serving our schools remains high.

The stewardship of our children’s education demands maturity, discipline, and respect. That standard should not be compromised.

Daniel Whitaker

Completely agree with you Daniel. To belittle and insult individuals for holding differing opinions flies in the face of our school district’s core values of respect and tolerance for others. The ‘Hopkinton School Committee Protcols and Best Practices for Effective SC Meetings’ document states in part: “Respect for our colleagues, our school staff, our students and our community is non-negotiable. We will listen to all viewpoints with an open mind, even when we disagree. Our dialogue will be constructive and free of personal attacks.” I sincerely hope we get additional candidates interested in running for this important committee.

Gee Paula how come there’s no record of a Daniel Whitaker having been registered to vote nor ever owning property in Hopkinton. I called the only Daniel Whitaker in MA it was disconnected. I called AP Whitaker and sons. There’s a Daniel there but has no connection to Hopkinton. I do wonder how this writer knew who you had blocked on your site.
Will the real Daniel Whitaker please stand up? As far as I can find he doesn’t exist.
