Opening Day for Hopkinton Little League (HLL) is not until the end of April; however, practices begin the first week of April.
Need for Volunteers
HLL President Gabe Recos welcomes volunteers to join the field clean-up this Sunday, March 29. HLL takes pride in keeping the fields clean. Recos explained, “Little League is different from other town sports leagues because it’s responsible for maintaining the baseball and softball fields on which the athletes play.”
Hundreds of community members typically come to the Spring clean-up day. “It’s crucial for us, as a volunteer-run organization, to have as many people as possible help us on that first weekend,” said Recos.
Recos said nearly 200 volunteers come together to make the entire HLL organization successful. HLL also employs high school students both as umpires and to maintain the fields, especially during the HLL Summer Sizzler Tournament. “I view it as a type of glue that unites people in our community,” Recos said.
Recos is grateful for the support HLL receives from the community, including volunteers, police and fire departments, sponsors, and everyone else involved.
One volunteer who shares Recos’ passion for HLL is Georgia Hall. She has been volunteering for about 10 years. Previously, she served as the softball division director. Now, she works as a player agent, manages the equipment, and coaches the 8U age group.
Georgia mentioned that she volunteers to teach the sport to younger generations and give back to her community. “I value the sport, and I value my community.” Hall’s three daughters have aged out of HLL. She continues to volunteer so she can create opportunities for the aged-out players from the community.
“I believe it holds great significance for them. Most have fond memories of playing in the Hopkinton League,” Hall said. “I think they recognize how important and valued their experiences were as Little Leaguers. Therefore, it feels natural for them to want to help create that experience for the younger kids in town.”
Hall looks forward to the season and hopes her experiences inspire others to volunteer. “It’s a rewarding experience to know you’re contributing to creating opportunities for kids,” said Hall.
Alex Scott, who has coached HLL for 14 years, mirrors Hall’s emphasis on volunteering. He has learned so much: scheduling umpires, fundraising, managing equipment, maintaining the fields, buying trophies, and more.
“When you consider the various positions and responsibilities, it’s remarkable,” said Scott. Players learn from coaches and volunteers, regardless of whether it’s related to the sport. “Volunteering may seem like a burden or a significant undertaking. However, you can volunteer at any level you choose,” said Scott.
