Low Turnout Reflects Quiet Ballot
Hopkinton held its Annual Town Election on Monday at Hopkinton Middle School, with roughly 940 ballots cast out of approximately 13,600 registered voters — a turnout of around 8 percent.
Town Clerk Connor Degan said the numbers were not surprising given the nature of the ballot. There were no ballot questions and only two contested races, leaving voters with little reason to come out in large numbers. “It’s definitely not our worst turnout for a local election,” Degan said.
In the School Committee race, three candidates competed for two open seats. Kyla McSweeney led the field with 653 votes, followed by Sandra Irwin with 518 and Sravana Krishna with 447. The race was close enough that tallying totals across all five precincts drew extra attention after the polls closed.
On the Board of Health, incumbent Nanda Manan won decisively with 649 votes to Dimitri Zuckerman’s 197.
Degan credited his team of 29 poll workers — some working full-day shifts — for running a smooth election. He also thanked Assistant Town Clerk Will Lee, town facilities staff, and the school department for the use of the building.
Results are unofficial until write-in votes for Constable are tallied, a process Degan expected to take a few hours. We will update then.
