Community Commitment: A Message from Matt Kizner

by | Dec 12, 2025 | Announcements, News

Dear Friends, neighbors, Hillers,

I hope that you will pardon my absence from the most recent select board meeting and special town meeting. Continuing a lifetime of being full of hot air and too much acid, my GI journey took a turn last week, resulting in my hospitalization and two surgeries. I am happy to report I am home and have been recovering with my family, albeit one gallbladder lighter.

Safe to say, I am still working hard for Hopkinton. I was in a meeting trying to join the charter review committee 12 hours before I was hospitalized. I am currently finalizing an update to the Water and Sewer Advisory Board to share a vision for how we might reach the Select Board’s goal of defining and standardizing a process for water and sewer rate setting and sustainable fund management.

It is my privilege to do this on your behalf, my joy that you have given me the chance to do so, and my commitment to continue to do it as long as you will let me.

I don’t need the organ to remain full of gall about the state of our finances, the need for more strategic long-range planning, or how to maximize the services you get as a taxpayer in this community.

Happy Holidays to Hillers near and far. I hope you are warm and well.

Cheers,
Matthew Kizner
Hopkinton Select Board

    How thoughtful of you to write this and let us all know! So sorry to hear about your recent health struggles, Mr. Kizner!

    You have been a breath of rational and proactive fresh air on the Select Board whose decisions have been exhibited your impressive:
    (1) decisions based on evidence (which sometimes requires time-consuming reading and getting educated from all angles/perspectives);
    (2) willingness to engage in healthy discourse (instead of just voting in a perfunctory way);
    (3) willingness to “eat humble pie” on behalf of other Town personnel and even other SB Members who have refused to or have been reluctant to do the same; (
    4) eye toward your voters and what they have asked (and continue to ask) you to do/value; and
    (5) motivation to do “right thing to do” instead of just “CYAing.”

    So many folks out there in the Hopkinton community are benefiting from your approach, your leadership, your ethics, and your elbow grease. I am so happy to hear you are recovering from your recent gall bladder surgery (which, I might add, seems to be happening to more and more people these days, for whatever reason).

    Thank you for “reaching out” to reassure people that even though the Town was “out of sight” (through your absence at recent Select Board meetings), it never was “out of mind.” It sounds like you’ve kept yourself plenty busy on the Town’s behalf while you convalesce!

    Thank you! And happy holidays to you and yours!

    Fabulous! An excellent display of good humor in less than optimal circumstances.

    May your hot air remain unfinished, and your gall continue unabated!
