All in a Day's Work

March 19, 2009 — Ellie Driscoll, left, and Maggie Fallon listen diligently to instructions in the Bean Bag Song and place the bags on their elbows, at the Sunshine Preschool this morning as part of the 3 year-old program. According to Director, Christine Martin, today was Very Important Person Day. The children were given their choice of whom to bring to school today, which was also a Multi-cultural Day.

"Many of our parents are from countries like Greece, China, England and France. This week's culture is the USA. It's great to see three year-olds celebrate the diversity of different cultures and be able to identify them on a map," said Mrs. Martin.

Today, the children sang a song using sign language at the same time, and brought their VIPs to the art gallery where each child had a display.

"It is really about the process, not the product," said Mrs. Martin.

"We are a high quality private half-day preschool," said Assistant Director Liz Dacey. "We are accredited nationally. We don't have to be, but we strive to maintain our quality and traditional environment, which best serves children. We have to maintain that kind of quality, because people can go elsewhere if we do not," she said.

Sunshine Preschool is for children in age from 2 yrs 9 mos to 5 years-old, and is accepting a finite number of students for the 2009-2010 school year.

John F. "Jack" Morrissey, 77

HOPKINTON - John F. "Jack" Morrissey, 77, died March 19 at Metrowest Medical Center Framingham following an illness. He was the husband of Mary (Cronin) Morrissey, to whom he was married for 32 years. He was a retired Fund Administrator for the Iron Workers of N.E. District Council in Boston.

Born in Worcester, he was the son of the late Thomas and Sarah (Murphy) Morrissey. John was a graduate of Worcester Classical High School and the College of the Holy Cross. In 1958 he graduated from the North American College in Rome and he ministered in the Diocese of Worcester from 1958 to 1974. In 1985 he graduated from the New England Institute of Anatomy and Funeral Directing. He was a licensed Massachusetts Funeral Director affiliated with his brother-in-law Thomas Cronin at the Callanan-Cronin Funeral Home in Hopkinton. He was a member of the Holy Cross Club of Greater Worcester.

In addition to his wife, he leaves five nephews, Thomas F. Morrissey of Barre, William K. Olsen, Jr. of Rutland, Vt., Robert W. Auclair of Wollaston, and Stephen T. Cronin and Michael J. Cronin of Hopkinton; seven nieces, Mary T. Morrissey of Evanston, Ill., Carroll Primomo of Delmar, N.Y., Patricia Morrissey of Maine, Bernadette Golas of Boylston, Kathleen Saunders of Newburyport, Mary McDermott of Westborough and Kathleen Townsend of Indianhead, Ill. He also leaves his brothers- and sisters-in-law William and Ann Olsen of Rutland, Vt., Robert and Kathleen Auclair of Greenfield, Thomas and Elizabeth Cronin of Hopkinton and Joanne Morrissey of Worcester. In addition, he leaves 16 grand nieces and nephews.

He is pre-deceased by three brothers, Thomas "Moe," William "Deac," and Robert "Butch" Morrissey, all formerly of Worcester.

His funeral will be held Monday March 23 at 9:30 a.m. from the Callanan-Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church Street, with a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday, March 22 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

2008 – 09 State PTA Reflections Winners

March 19, 2009 — The HPTA is proud to announce that three Hopkinton students were recognized in this year's 2008-09 State PTA Reflections Program that supports the artistic categories of literature, photography, choreography, visual arts, film/video production and musical composition. Isabelle Simes (Center School) received first place in the Primary age category for her dance choreography entry. She will compete in the National competition.

Other winners include Matthew Paolucci (Hopkins School, center photo) who received third place in the Intermediate age category for literature, and Michael Protas (Middle School) who received both second and third place for the Middle/Jr. age category for photography. REGISTER EARLY….RACE LIMITED TO 1500 PARTICIPANTS

March 18, 2009 — Hopkinton, MA is well known as the starting point of the Boston Marathon, but it also hosts another important race: Over the past 5 years, The Sharon Timlin Memorial 5K Race/Walk to cure ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) has become a major fundraiser for ALS research, raising in excess of $450,000 in total.

“We strongly believe that with proper funding, researchers will make a treatment, if not a cure, a reality sooner rather than later”, says Abbie Rosenberg, organizer of the event. The event, which began in 2004, donates 100% of funds raised to The Angel Fund, a volunteer-run, non-profit organization which benefits Dr. Robert Brown and his colleagues at the Cecil B. Day Neuromuscular Lab at UMASS, Worcester, MA.

When the economic indicators turned south in the Fall of 2008 and some of the key corporate sponsors from the 5 previous years were faced with having to significantly reduce their commitment or completely withdraw, the race organizers decided to get innovative in order to successfully fulfill the commitment to raise more money than last year’s record setting fundraising effort. The Sharon Timlin Memorial 5K Race/walk and Family Fun Day began as the premier race of the Hopkinton Running Club and has grown yearly. This year the well organized 5K race will be limited to 1500 participants, although the family fun day is open to families from 9 – noon on June 20, 2009 and includes activities for all age groups. Three Selectman Candidates

March 18, 2009 — Short-lived candidate for the Board of Selectmen, Simon Zimmerman, who was interviewed just last evening by HopNews, withdrew his nomination papers today, according to Town Clerk, Ann Click.

That leaves three candidates: Incumbent Selectmen Vice-Chair Mary Pratt, a Democrat, Republican Michele Gates, and Todd Cestari, currently unenrolled, but still has time to switch his party designation at the office of the Town Clerk.

10K Draw

The Hopkinton Little League will be holding its 5^th annual $10,000 Draw and Silent Action on May 15^th 2009 at the Portuguese Club in Milford. The tickets are $100 each, and each ticket admits two people into the function. The price includes an open bar (beer & wine for 3 hours), an Italian feast catered by Olivas Market, a night of great entertainment and a chance to win $10,000.00. Republican Candidate for Selectman - Michele Gates

Takes papers out - will run in caucus

March18, 2009 — Michelle Gates, an accountant by training whose daughter is a member of the HHS Class of 2009, and whose husband is on the Board of Health, has taken out papers to run for Selectman as a Republican candidate. Mrs. Gates can also expect the nod of her party at their caucus on April 10, 2009.

In a prepared release handed out to the media, Mrs. Gates said she is indebted to the people of Hopkinton for the "outstanding" education her family has received.

Mrs. Gates has served in several capacities in town government, including parks and Recreation as chairman, President of Hopkinton Historical Society, Chairman of the Hopkinton Historical Commission, CPC and CPA. She is also a member of the Hopkinton Marathon Committee, Downtown Revitalization and the Open Space MP Committee.

Mrs. Gates is the Membership Secretary of the Hopkinton Sportsmen's association as well as a Justice of the Peace.

Her main points of her handout are that she will work to attract new business to relieve residential tax burden by expanding the water and sewer infrastructure

She promises to work with the Town Manager in making the tough financial decisions affecting Hopkinton.

They were relocated (Photo) to the western side of the building in a job that hs taken all day, and has blocked a half dozen parking spaces in front of the building.

Pleasant Street Garage Fire - Likely Cause,

Careless Disposal of Smoking Materials ~ Acting Chief, Ken Clark

Working smoke detector awakens resident

March 18, 2009 — Acting Fire Chief Ken Clark said today that a fire in a garage on Pleasant Street last night was likely caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials. He said firefighters found a plastic bucket containing two butts and several on the ground under it in the fire scene.

The Fire Department responded to the 10:55 p.m. call with 2 Hopkinton engines as well as an Ashland engine and an Ashland Tower (ladder), a rescue truck, and an ambulance. L-6, Lt. Bob Bartlett, was first on the scene and was joined by Chief Clark.

One teen resident was awakened by smoke detectors sounding and warned a sleeping resident. According to Chief Clark, upon hearing the smoke alarm, the teen went to the kitchen to check on the stove when he saw smoke coming from the adjoining garage. When he opened the garage door, the smoke was so thick that he could not see to shut it, which contributed to smoke damage in the residential area, the chief said.

In addition to a storage area in the garage burning, Chief Clark said that a vehicle had minor damage.

March 18, 2009 — St. Patrick’s Day arrived at the Senior Center with a Lot ‘o Green and a Lot ‘o Corned Beef and Cabbage! Just about everyone was wearing green to celebrate the day and people were in a real festive mood--greeting each other with “Top o’ the mornin’ to you!”

The corned beef and ham came from TJ’s, and the Senior Center cooks prepared all the rest of the fixin’s—over 50 lbs each of potatoes, carrots and onions. Not to mention dozens of cabbages! This Irish feast fed about 130 people and believe me, nobody went home hungry. Thanks to everyone who volunteered for this great special event!

Now, I’m not Irish, so I guess the food of my nationality would be croissants (French), Haggis (never had it, but it’s a popular food in Scotland) and bratwurst and sauerkraut (German), but I do LOVE corned beef and cabbage!

While people were enjoying their desserts (what else, but green jello!) and each other’s company, they were entertained by a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day show.

Betty Wyckoff, her daughter Gretchen Pinkava and their Angelina Children’s Choir serenaded the crowd with their beautiful harmonious voices singing a great collection of songs. These kids are truly amazing! There was even some step dancing performances!

John Guido was back again, playing all kinds of Irish songs on his keyboard, as well as many requests such as “Old Time Rock and Roll.”

As I looked around, I noticed how many people were smiling and truly enjoying this special day-- the moment was right then, right there--in the big room at the Hopkinton Senior Center. As people were leaving, I overheard so many “What a great time I had!” comments. That’s what the day was all about!

Three's Company

Third candidate for Selectman takes out papers

March 17, 2009 — In an email to HopNews Tuesday evening, five-year resident Todd Cestari announced his candidacy for the Board of Selectmen, the third person to do so. He is a father of three children who all attend Hopkinton schools, according to the release.

He states, "My goal is to provide a stronger, more diverse tax base, while keeping our small-town feel and protecting the environment.

"Today, more than ever, I believe it is critical that every taxpayer dollar spent is carefully prioritized. We must implement a balanced budget and spend within our means. We must be sensitive to the economic hardships individuals and families are already facing, while still maintaining a strong level of town services. This will require investigating non-traditional means of providing these services, such as consolidating with surrounding communities, but only in cases that don’t compromise the needs of Hopkinton."

Mr. Cestari, who holds a BS in Mathematics, is a manager in a large health care software services company. His release goes on to pitch public school education and bringing fresh ideas to the Board of Selectmen.

Mr. Cestari stated in a reply email that he is unenrolled and resides at 19 Elizabeth Road.

Front Street Resident Takes Out papers for Selectman

Would like to see Weston Nurseries vote reversed

March 17, 2009 — Simon Zimmerman, a "semi-retired" former insurance agency owner who says, "I am looking around for the next thing to do," took out nomination papers for one of two seats for the Board of Selectman. Mr. Zimmerman wrote on his nomination papers that he is a Democrat, but a check by the Town Clerk's office revealed that he is registered as an unenrolled voter. He said in a telephone interview this evening that he has to go back and rectify that contradiction by either taking out new papers and changing to unenrolled, or registering his party designation as a Democrat. This evening, he said he has not decided which to do.

When asked why he was running, Mr. Zimmerman said, "Too many people say they don't like how things are done, so you got to change things or settle for the status quo."

"It goes back to the Nixon era and the silent majority," he said. "That means that the bulk of the people watch unhappily as events unfold without doing anything."

"There are some things that need to be paid for, and some things that shouldn't be done — libraries are vibrant and fill a need. Hopkinton is good, but Natick offers much more," he said, answering a question about his positions. Mr. Zimmerman continued.

"We should reconsider the Weston Nurseries parcel, if it's not too late," he said. "The town should have acquired it.

"The density is too much for that area of town. I live in that part of town," he said. Mr. Zimmerman is a resident of 62 Front Street.

When asked about the snafu at the Town Clerk's office, Mr. Zimmerman said he would either refile or change his party affiliation from unenrolled to Democrat.

"There is something that says if you are a Democrat, you have a better chance," he said.

When asked if he might split the vote if he ran as a Democrat — Selectman Vice-Chair Mary Pratt, a Democrat, is running for re-election — he said, "I would guess more people know Pratt. I don't think either party will see me as a threat.

"I have no main issue, but want to try to do the best job I can.

"There may be things I disagree with in each party, but that's the advantage of being an independent," Mr. Zimmerman said.

On funding for the schools, Mr. Zimmerman said he has no position.

And when asked about support for an override, he said he doesn't know yet.

NOTE: The deadline for taking out nomination papers is March 27, and the last day to file is April 13. The Republican and Democratic Town Committees will hold caucuses at which time they will nominate candidates for election.

Recycling with the Lions Club

Spring is here . . . finally, and the Lions Club is working hard to raise funds for scholarships for Hopkinton students. They will be collecting recyclable bottles and cans on Saturday, March 28^th at Colella’s Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

They don’t promise a marching band when you come by, but they sure do appreciate any and all donations.

FRAUD ALERT

The Hopkinton Police Department would like to alert the community, especially senior citizens, to a threat of fraud. The following scenario and very similar scams have occurred in and around Hopkinton.

The caller (suspect) will call and make you believe that he is your grandchild. He will report that he has been in a car accident and needs money for either car repairs or hospital bills. He will then convince you to use Money Gram (or Western Union) to wire him the money and not to tell his parent (your son or daughter) because he doesn’t want to worry them. Most of the money has gone to Provinces in Canada. The caller will:

Know your grandson / granddaughter’s name

Know where they went to College and what they studied

Be extremely convincing

Be very manipulative

Block the phone call so identification is impossible

Do not become a victim. Verify what the caller is telling you through your children or another trusted person. Do not wire money to anyone unless you are absolutely positive and sure who it is going to and where. Don’t ever give out over the phone:

Your social security number

Personal Identification Number for your bank card

Or any other personal information unless you trust who you area speaking with

Any form of currency that cannot be easily traced and accounted for

22-Year Old British Man Arrested, Arraigned in Connection With Murder Of Grandmother

WALTHAM– A British man has been arrested and arraigned in connection with the alleged stabbing death of his grandmother, Eleanor Clark, 80, of Weston, Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone, Weston Police Chief Steve Shaw, and Newton Police Chief Matthew Cummings informed the public today.

James Clark, 22, who was residing at a half-way house in Dorchester, was arrested last evening in Newton and arraigned in Waltham District Court today on a charge of first degree murder. Waltham District Court Judge Flynn ordered Clark held without bail. His next court date is April 14.

According to authorities, at approximately 10:00 p.m. Weston Police responded to reports of a possible homicide at 476 Conant Road in Weston. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim laying face down and suffering from apparent stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Newton Police responded to a Newton home and found the defendant sitting in the kitchen of the home. Based on statements made by the defendant and information gathered by Weston Police at the victim's home, Clark was placed under arrest and charged with murder. He was transported to the Weston Police Department pending arraignment.

Weston Police, Newton Police, and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the stabbing. Based on that investigation, it is alleged that the defendant entered his grandmother's house, an argument ensued, and that the defendant then struck the victim with a blunt object and stabbed her with a knife that he possessed.

These charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The prosecutor assigned to the case is Assistant District Attorney Michael Fabbri. The victim witness advocate is Danielle DeMeo. The case is being investigated by Weston Police, Newton Police, and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.

Gerard M. Sullivan, 52

DARLINGTON, S.C. Gerard M. Sullivan, 52, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 4, 2009, in Darlington, S.C. He was the son of Joseph Sullivan Sr. and the late Patricia Sullivan.

Gerard was a graduate of Hopkinton High School, Class of 1975. He joined the Army and was in the Airborne Ranger division.

He was the father of David Sullivan and his wife, Melissa, of Austin, Texas, and Christopher and Philip Sullivan, of Mcallen, Texas; four brothers, John Sullivan, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Joseph Sullivan of Texas, Dennis Sullivan of Hopkinton, and Donald Sullivan of Lexington; sister, Suzanne Evans, of Mexico; one grandchild, John Sullivan, of Austin, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will take place in Austin, Texas.

A Dream Come True

March 16, 2009 — Patricia Miller (In background of photo) was as animated and excited as many of her young charges as she showed off her expanded office area to everyone who walked into her TLC, The Learning Center on Wood Street today. Ms. Miller, who is an OCCS-certified Director with a B.S. in Early Childhood Development and 24 years experience in the field, is ready to begin her tenth year of a dream-come-true at her 59 Wood Street facility.

"It was a lifelong dream to establish a loving and nurturing environment where leaning is fun and creativity is the rule," she said, the words rolling out like a heartfelt song. When asked if that was the slogan, she said it was not.

"Where children come first, is our slogan," she said . "Get it? Children come here first, before other educational levels, and we put them first in every thing we do. It is a double-meaning slogan."

"We have an infant/toddler program, two full-day classrooms, a kindergarten wrap-around program, before and after school programs, and a summer program which features off-site field trips, and several enrichment programs geared to meet a child's interest.

"And we have a 1/2 day pre-school for which we enrolling at our Open House," she said.

TLC will be having an Open House for the '09-10 season on April 29, 2009 from 6:030 pm - 7:30 pm.

"Bring the Kids," she added.
