More Than Four Walls: A Reflection on Family and Community

HHS Senior, Owen Fitzpatrick, presents a curated show featuring artwork right off the walls of people’s homes showcasing what it means to be a family.
Participants were asked to provide a brief essay explaining why the artwork represents them as a family. These statements will be posted alongside the art. Start Line Brewing has generously sponsored a $100 Gift Certificate for the piece awarded “Best in Show,” which will be announced at the Public Art Opening.
A statement from Fitzpatrick: During the pandemic shutdown, one of my favorite websites was Window Swap. I could go from Berlin to Rio to India in a click and I felt less alone. The idea to curate an exhibit based on what families have on their walls at home was born. Our homes are more than the four walls around us. There’s been so much discussion lately of who we are as a community – we are not this – or we are not that. This exhibit makes a positive statement about who we are and what is important to us. People will see that while different, we all have a common thread of surrounding ourselves with memories. Through sharing our history, we will come together in the present. You will see cherished pieces and read the stories of why this piece is important to the exhibitors within our community. Embrace your natural curiosity as they welcome you into their lives. Ask questions and share your stories. Few things are more important than family and home. Sharing both means community bonding. I encourage people who may not know each other to introduce themselves at this show and expand togetherness. Art is greater than ourselves, no matter the medium, no matter the artist.
Public Art Opening and Reception: Saturday May 13 @ 6pm.
This show is made possible by a grant from the Hopkinton Cultural Council.
