ELECTION 2011

Senior Center

Review of 2010

Wheelchair volleyball, horseshoes, and more!

by Nancy Drawe

February 2, 2011 — Oh, what a year!  2010 was the year of many exciting activities and events that happened at the Hopkinton Senior Center.   In case you’ve forgotten them, I’m here to remind you and give you a little recap of just some of the highlights from January through December, 2010.

JANUARY--- Happy New Year!  On Friday, January 22, the center hosted a BEACH DAY.  It was a nice way to break up the January doldrums with fun games like chair volleyball and horseshoes and a nice summer menu of hamburgers and hot dogs were served for lunch in the Great Room.  A new state senator was elected on  Tuesday, January 19.  Scott Brown captured the U.S. Senate seat held by Edward M. Kennedy for nearly a half century
FEBRUARY—The members of the Holliston Senior Center Band came to our center; they certainly have a large following!  Everyone danced and sang along to their music.

MARCH---On Wednesday, March 17 at 11:30, the annual corned beef and cabbage dinner was catered by TJ’s.  After dinner, everyone enjoyed an afternoon of music and dancing by musician John Guido,    Set clocks ahead for SPRING!  The Health Fair was this month--FREE Vision, Blood Pressure and Blood Glucose, Cholesterol, Hearing and Bone Density screenings were available, plus a program that provided a wealth of information about options for seniors and their families regarding health care and ways to stay safe in their own homes.

The Senior Center Art Show was held during the Health Fair.  All the students in the Painting, Pottery and Quilting classes displayed their beautiful works of art on this day.

APRIL----A nice beginning to springtime—the Daisy and Brownie Troops were all on hand at the center hosting special afternoon for the seniors with plenty of food and craft activities.

Special guests of this event were The Mellowtones—the center’s own chorus!  They had a sing-a-long, which the whole audience, young and old, really enjoyed.

MAY---On May 3 at the Annual Town Meeting, Article No. 14, which allowed for the center’s parking lot expansion was passed!  Yayyy, bring on more spaces!

This was the month for the annual Pen Pal Pizza Party, number 18 to be exact, by Center School’s first grade teacher, Mark Boisvert.   First graders and their pen pals got to meet up close and personal after a whole year of writing back and forth!

Now, on to the biggest event of the whole year—the Rummage Sale!  For three days in May, the center was transformed into a HUGE bargain area!  This is a big time fundraiser for the center and bringing in over $10,000 certainly showed how many bargains were to be had!

JUNE--- The theme for the 2nd annual Rummage Fashion Show was “Trash and Treasures,” based on the type of clothing and accessories the models had bought at the rummage sale.   Anyone could participate, as long as they modeled something they bought at the sale.  The criterion for this show was just having a lot of laughs, fun AND free strawberry shortcake for everybody.

JULY—The center was closed for the first week, giving the staff a chance to catch up on paperwork, plus the center got a good cleaning!

AUGUST--means the arrival of the annual “Bring a Friend Day” at the Hopkinton Senior Center—their fourth year!   The seniors invited their grandchildren to come and join them for a fun afternoon of games and a nice little barbecue.  This day is always a huge success!

ALL the people who volunteer at the Senior Center were treated to a special Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.  This is an important annual event because it’s an opportunity for the staff, Council on Aging Board members and Friends of the Seniors to give thanks to all the volunteers who help keep the Hopkinton Senior Center running smoothly.  A surprise treat for all the volunteers was music by an A Cappella group called, “Street Magic.”  They are a group of five men from the Boston area who perform 50’s and 60’s songs—all a cappella, no instruments involved.

SEPTEMBER—Look out, because September was the debut of the Sock Hop Ladies!  (Committee Members Ronnie, Donna, Charlotte, Tracy, Gail and me—Punky).  We were ready to do the promo’s for the Sock Hop of 2010!  The Reminisants came to the center on September 17, and believe me, a GREAT time was held by all!   Watch out, because the Sock Hop Ladies will be back this year!

OCTOBER-- For the people looking for something different to do this month besides raking leaves, the Silent Auction was on Saturday, October 16.   This auction was hosted by The Friends of the Seniors, and from what I was told, over $5,000 was raised from this event.  That will certainly help pay for the van and kitchen expenses!

.  The center was certainly GOLDEN on October 19th.   Any senior in town who was 80 or  older, was invited to the Annual Golden Tea that the Council on Aging hosts every year.  It’s such a lovely way for the members of the COA to honor all these seniors.  It’s their chance to reconnect with some of their friends from way back when and talk about the good all days!

NOVEMBER—Printed my annual Thanksgiving column, all about the Woodville Rod and Gun Club and how they host a wonderful Thanksgiving Day dinner that is FREE to anyone!

DECEMBER--- T’is the season to be jolly, merry, festive, holly, and just plain ol’ happy!    This year, the much awaited Hopkinton Police Association’s annual Christmas Party for Hopkinton’s senior citizens was held at the Senior Center on Saturday, December 11.   It’s one of the senior’s favorite events of the year!  Despite the cold weather, the center was packed!

I printed my annual Christmas Memories column---seniors talked about their own special memories from Christmas’ gone by.

And there you have it!  A whole year summed up in one little column!  Just some of the highlights, not including all the regular activities the center holds each week.   I hope 2011 will be a wonderful new year for everyone and that you will enjoy reading my upcoming columns.  I also hope that many more people will discover the Hopkinton Senior Center and enjoy everything it has to offer.
