Selectmen Brian Herr
Changes Voter
Registration
from Republican Party to Unenrolled
by Robert Falcione
June 20, 2018 -- Consenting to a short interview this afternoon,
Brian Herr, recently reelected to his fourth term as a Hopkinton
Selectman, said that the residents who recently voted have a
right to know [that he is no longer a Republican, and has
changed his standing to unenrolled]. This reporter asked why he
did it.
"I have been thinking about it for months now, because
of what's going on in Washington and Congress.
"I've invested a lot of time and money [Mr. Herr ran
for US Senate as a Republican in 2014], but as a result of
what's going on in Washington, I can't sit around and do
nothing," he said.
If political parties are known to assist
candidates, where will he get his future support?
"I was pretty clear that this will be my fourth and
final term as Selectman. I am not sure I would need support," he
said.
"The Republican Party in Washington and Capitol Hill,
has completely lost its way.
"Hearing young kids crying for their parents is beyond
heart-wrenching," said the father of five.
"I won't stand for it anymore with the
Republicans.
"It's the right thing to do," he said.

Everett Man Found Guilty of Murder in
Connection with 2016 Fatal Shooting
EVERETT
— Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Everett Chief of
Police Steven Mazzie have announced that Cristian Nunez, 19, of
Everett, was found guilty by a Middlesex Superior Court jury today
of second-degree murder in connection with the January 3, 2016 fatal
shooting of 19-year-old Omar Wilfredo Reyes, of Everett.
Judge Laurence Pierce scheduled motions and sentencing for June 25
at 9:00 a.m.
“This defendant participated in a coordinated plan with two other
men to lure the victim from his home under false pretenses with the
intention to end the victim’s life. As a result of the defendant’s
actions a 19-year-old young man was tragically murdered. Although
this case remains open with two additional defendants charged, we
hope that today’s verdict provides some measure of comfort to the
family of Omar Wilfredo Reyes,” said District Attorney Ryan. “I am
grateful to our partners in the Massachusetts State Police, the
Everett Police Department and the State Police Crime Lab DNA Unit
for their work on this case.”
At approximately 12:20 a.m. on January 3, 2016, Everett Police
responded to a report of an injured man under the Tileston Street
Bridge behind Carter Street in Everett. Upon arrival, they located
Reyes, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. He was found
directly beneath MS-13 graffiti and it appeared that the victim had
been wearing headphones when he was shot as his music was still
playing when he was located by a passerby. Reyes was then
transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where he died from his
injuries on January 4.
Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District
Attorney’s Office and Everett Police immediately began an
investigation.
Through their investigation, authorities learned that on January 2,
2016, the victim allegedly received several messages from Jose
Vasquez Ardon, 19, of Everett, asking him to meet up. Reyes was met
by the defendant who was allegedly accompanied by Ardon, and
Rigoberto Landaverde-Lemus, 22, of Everett, at the underpass of the
Tileston Street Bridge where the fatal shooting occurred.
Authorities also observed that the victim had a 14 inch slash in his
jacket.
Investigators obtained surveillance footage from where Reyes was
supposed to meet the defendants. In one clip, the surveillance shows
three males and the victim. About seven and a half minutes later,
the three defendants can be seen emerging without the victim.
A search was conducted of the home of Jose Vasquez Ardon which
resulted in authorities locating clothing hidden in the basement
ceiling rafters. That clothing was tested for DNA and gunshot
residue. Results indicated that a DNA on a sweatshirt matched the
DNA of Nunez, and was found with other clothing containing gunshot
residue.
Ardon was arrested in Revere and Nunez was arrested in Malden on
January 30, 2016. Landaverde-Lemus was arrested by Chelsea Police
for possession of a loaded firearm on June 26, 2016. He was
subsequently charged with murder in connection to this case on
September 21, 2016 after authorities allegedly matched his DNA to
the DNA found on the recovered clothing.
Jose Vasquez Ardon and Rigoberto Landaverde-Lemus are both charged
with murder. These charges are allegations and the defendants are
presumed innocent until proven guilty.
This case was investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney’s
Office, the Everett Police Department and Massachusetts State Police
assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
The prosecutors assigned to this case were Assistant District
Attorneys Elizabeth Dunigan, Carrie Spiros and Nicole Nixon. The
Victim Witness Advocate was Dora Quiroz.

Hopkinton Military History
In keeping with a continuing examination of Hopkinton veterans'
contribution to military history, those who attended the recent Vets
Breakfast reviewed the Italian Campaign of World War II.
Several soldiers from Hopkinton were in the heat of that battle.
The Italian Campaign began in
mid-1943, with the invasion of Sicily. For 2 years, until V-E
Day, the allies engaged the German enemy north-westerly up the
Apennine spine of Italy, costing hundreds of thousands of
casualties on each side. American casualties at Anzio alone
were 59 thousand. Forces of the US 5th Army under Lt. General
Mark W. Clark led the main allied offensive during the
campaign. The 5th comprised 5 American divisions and 3 British
divisions.
From
Hopkinton, Raymond J. Fair, Jr., was an original member of
Battery A, 985th Field Artillery Battalion. The unit
continually shelled the enemy with 150 mm "Long Tom" guns from
the western Italian shore near Anzio to the mountainous Monte
Cassino. Breaking through the Gustav Line was largely due to
the efforts of the 985th.
John "Chuck" Hunt was assigned to
the 61st MP Company, and served as a guard for general Clark.
In Hopkinton Chuck was easily recognized by his height,
estimated at 6' 4" or 5". General Clark was equally tall,
creating an imposing duo. The selectivity of Chuck's assignment
can be appreciated knowing about his commander. Clark was never
a colonel; he was promoted directly to brigadier general. Clark
was the youngest major general in the US Army, and the youngest
lieutenant general.
Guy
DeStefano was assigned to a howitzer unit, and Frank Tedeschi to
an artillery unit during the campaign. Few details are known.
In
1944, soon after LtGen Clark opted to move into Rome, a
controversial decision some say, the allied battle plans changed
considerably. D-Day was 6 June 1944!
The
Hopkinton veterans who were among the discussion group are shown
in front of a photo collage comprising LtGen Clark, Chuck Hunt,
Ray Fair, Jr., Frank Tedeschi, and the ruins of Monte Cassino.
The veterans are (L to R): Hank Allessio, Ed O'Leary, Ron
Remillard, Bruce Smith, Unk., Russ Greve, Ed Mongiat, Eric
Sonnett, and Bob Santucci. ~ Contributed by Hank Allessio

Possibilities for the soon to be vacant Center
School include a youth recreational center, administrative offices,
and classrooms for life skills, according to The Center School Reuse
Advisory Committee.
Last night's meeting was the
committee's second meeting in four months. The committee invited
Superintendent Dr. Carol Cavanaugh, Director of Parks and Rec Bob
Dobinski, and Director of Youth and Family Services Denise Hildreth
to present how their department would utilize the space.
Demolition of 1950’s addition of Center School
Co-Chairmen of the committee, Ken Weismantel,
began the presentation saying the goal of the committee is to
maintain the historic facade facing the common and to preserve
1980's addition where the gym is.
Weismantel also noted that the town will have
to pay $890,000 to remove hazardous material from Center School.
“We
[will] get a new entrance to the parks and rec building. We have to
demolish the 1950’s addition, and that would include perhaps the
principal's office on the north side of the building,” Weismantel
said.
Center school, constructed in three phases,
includes the iconic landmark built in 1928, the narrow structure
connecting the main building to the gym built in 1950, and the gym
complex built in the 1980's.
According to the proposal, the second addition
will be demolished as it is no longer useful. Chairman Richard
Flannery cited the fact that the library considered using this part
of Center School during their renovation but decided against the
idea due to safety concerns.
Possible uses for Center School
Dr. Cavanaugh,
representing the interests of the school district, proposed two
classrooms for the high schools “life skills” program which will be
in the 1928 building. This program, mandated by the Commonwealth,
includes 18-22-year-olds on Individual Education Plans (IEP).
Dr. Cavanaugh admitted that Hopkinton high
school currently only has three students enrolled in the program,
but added that Hopkinton could bring in youths from other towns and
charge tuition as high as $60,000.
Dobinski and Hildreth proposed that the 1980s
addition and gym would become a youth center for children. Dobinski
suggested that the gym will be home to various Parks and Rec leagues
such as Rec Basketball, but also will include non-athletic related
programs such as STEM and Art Class, Red Class Classes, and a kid’s
newsroom.
Hildreth, a self-described “risk management
reduction specialist,” cited how family life today is harder now
than ever before and how space would allow youth to have a home away
from home.
Town Clerk Connor Degan proposed that some
space in the original building should be for town record storage.
Currently town records are stored in the basement of Department of
Public Works Building. The humid New England summers and cold
winters are causing permanent damage to the documents and must move
to a climate controlled environment, according to Degan.
The last proposal came from Jane Moran, Chair
of the Upper Charles Trail Committee. The Upper Charles Trail, which
begins in Milford and ends at Hopkinton State Park, would be
rerouted to include the refurbished Center School.
“This
would be a real Jewel of the trail if we could do this,” Moran said.

Frank
(Francis J.) Foisy, 95
Frank (Francis J.) Foisy, age
95, went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday June 12,
2018 and is now singing with the angels. He was at home in Livonia,
MI surrounded by his loving family.
Frank was born on May
27, 1923 in Detroit, MI and married his high school sweetheart
Marilyn (Armstrong) on May 4, 1946. They just celebrated their 72nd
wedding anniversary. Frank served with the Army Infantry in WWII. He
was captured in Italy and spent over a year as a POW in Germany,
finally being released at the end of the war.
Frank lived and loved life with a positive attitude that lifted
everyone around him. He enjoyed golf, bowling and singing in the
choir.
He retired from the
US Postal Service in 1985, and split his time between Livonia, MI
and Palmetto, FL. At his Piney Point home in Florida, he sang in two
choirs,
acted, and cooked often for community events. He loved to engage in
the football rivalry between the University of Michigan and Ohio
State.
Frank is survived by
his wife Marilyn, his children Carol and Dairell Abbott of
Northville, MI, Ron and Barb Foisy of Hopkinton, MA, Sandy Foisy of
Livonia, and Bob Foisy of Laguna Hills, CA. Frank and Marilyn were
blessed to have five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Plans are being made
for a funeral mass and a memorial celebration of Frank’s life.
Memorial contributions can be made to Angela Hospice of Livonia, MI.

Jump!
June 14, 2018 -- A 1/800th of a second
shutter speed is adequate to stop most normal motion; but a 1/1200th
might have stopped the rain drops from elongating, and the sparrow's
feet from blurring, taken during a very light rain today, as the
sparrow jumped up and flew away in a slit-second. |

Bee Aware
June 13, 2018 -- Girl Scout Troop 65040
recently completed their Silver Award, the 2nd highest achievement
in Girl Scouts. The group of eight 7th grade cadettes have been
working for over 5 months on spreading awareness on the declining
bee population. They started working on a bee friendly garden early
April and completed their project 2 weeks ago. Since then, the girls
have been trading off shifts to water the now thriving plants. As a
celebration for their success and a thank you to their supporters,
the girls hosted an event at the garden on Tuesday, June 12th. The
garden is at the head of the Center Trail on Main Street (across
from Hopkinton Lumber). Be sure to stop by and take a look. Back
