Common Themes

April 27, 2018 -- The pre-revolutionary Stone Tavern (now a residence), once a subject of the king of England, the Doughboy, a monument to the soldiers of World War I, the American Flag at half-staff for today honoring the passing of a State Representative, a flag remembering the missing and unaccounted for boys who never came home from the Vietnam War, the off-camera monument to the WWII generation, and a horn player competing only with the wind, all exhibiting the nearly silent testimony of liberty and freedom on a day that American troops defend and export these rights to people across the globe.

Accident-Prone

April 28, 2018 -- Dispatch reported a collision between the van and a DPW vehicle on Hayden Rowe Street near EMC Park involving no injuries. The frequency of accidents on a stretch of Hayden Rowe Street has motivated authorities to install traffic-calming signs and devices, as well as moving parental parking queues off of the roadway. The Marathon Elementary School is set to open in the fall a few hundred feet from this entrance to EMC Park.

Candidate for Selectman

My name is Patrick Atwell. After discussing with my family and friends, I have decided to run for selectman in Hopkinton. I graduated from Northeastern University and I am finishing up my Juris Doctorate this year at Massachusetts School of Law. I am a certified Negotiator/ Mediator . I represented the men and women of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers that work for Verizon for 19 years. I am a Massachusetts native and since 2012, I have called Hopkinton my hometown.

Having lived in other towns, I can tell you that there is no greater place than Hopkinton. We are a town of close, dedicated people who rally around each other in both good times and bad. My wife and I have 4 wonderful children and we are grateful to have the #1 public school system in the state, which is a wonderful asset that has also enhanced our expansion. Our town is growing and I would love to represent the town in these changing times. I am passionate that we continue to embrace the small town culture that we love while encouraging new opportunities for expansion and development that would appeal to both new and life time residents. Change can be a positive thing and I am driven to represent Hopkinton as we move forward in continuing to make this town the wonderful place we call home.

Hopkinton Veterans' Breakfast
4 May 2018
    Dear Veterans and Friends:

The upcoming Vets Breakfast on 4 May 2018, at 0900 hours, at the Senior Center is your opportunity to share camaraderie, community, and chow with fellow veterans.

Tribute will be paid to comrades who passed away during the past month, and those who are on "Sick Call" will be acknowledged.  It is a generous gesture when you pay a visit or send a card to one or more of our ailing comrades.

Memories of military events that previously occurred on May 4th will be shared; for example, re-living the intense naval battle of that one day.  The devastation caused by mines, torpedoes, and kamikaze planes in the waters around Okinawa resulted in severe losses by both sides.

Other announcements will keep you abreast of Hopkinton happenings relating to veterans.

A free breakfast and lunch will be made available to the first person who correctly answers the monthly baseball quiz: Ted Williams has the most-ever HRs as a Red Sox.  Who is No. 2 in career HRs as a Red Sox?  Last month there were multiple winners of an easy question.

Any veteran with transportation difficulties should call Amy Beck on/before 2 May 2018, 508 497-9730.  Please encourage other Hopkinton Vets to attend the breakfast.

American Legion McDonough-Carlberg Post 202 will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and the blessing of the meal.

     See you Friday.  Out.

Selectmen Meet

April 24, 2018 -- Above, Human Resources Director Maria Casey introduces the newly hired Principal Planner, Georgia Wilson, seated to her left, to the Hopkinton Selectmen, who unanimously voted to approve the appointment of Ms. Wilson by Town Manager Norman Khumalo.

Veterinarian Margo Roman of M.A.S.H. Vet Services was the first to take to the microphone during the Public Input section of the Board's meeting, pitching for an integrative veterinarian school in a Dell/EMC building "vacant for 18 years."

"The name is already there," she said. "Energy Medicine College [EMC]." Dr. Roman is well known for advocating for fecal transplants in pets, and has cited its success in humans, too (Video).

"It is private property," said Selectmen Chair John Coutinho.

Well-known and outspoken tree worker Joe Regan went on mic to advocate for a Tree Department for Hopkinton, citing overgrown and rotting trees as needs, as well as those that will grow to interfere with utilities or the line of site at street intersections.

Selectman Brian Herr suggested studying what other towns with similar demographics have done.

Girl Scout Troop 65040 (Photo, below) presented their plan to use some town-owned property on Center Trail to grow a garden for bees. Black-eyed Susans, milkweed and chives were some of the plants they learned would attract bees.

Lame-duck Selectman Todd Cestari noted that the public has been becoming more aware of the [declining population of] bees.

The Board unanimously approved the use of the property, after which the Selectmen and spectators burst into sustained applause as the girls took their seats.

The Board did not entertain the joint appointment with the Planning Board to fill an empty seat, because the Planning Board could not send enough members, according to one town official. HopNews will post more about the meeting on Wednesday.

   Candidate's Statement

   Hello Hopkinton Neighbors,

My name is Lesley Ficarri, and I am running for re-election to the Board of Assessors for a 3-year term.

Last May, many of you came out to support my candidacy and elect me to the open 1-year term. Thank you! The Board of Assessors' key responsibilities are to support the Assessing Department in valuing real estate and personal property, considering tax abatements and exemptions, and providing data and analysis needed to set the annual tax rate in accordance with applicable Massachusetts laws.

Being on this Board was a great opportunity to serve our community. I integrated quickly and learned about how revenue is generated for the Town of Hopkinton through our taxes. I leveraged my background and skills as a human resources executive to make decisions considering legal frameworks and data along with the impact on our residents and businesses. Sound judgment, high ethics and the ability to maintain confidentiality guided us during each meeting.

My husband, Pete, and I grew up near Pittsburgh, PA. We moved to Massachusetts in 1998 and to Hopkinton in 2001 when we built our house. We previously volunteered for the town. I served on the Personnel Committee, and Pete was on the Zoning Board of Appeals and Zoning Advisory Committee. We have made great friends here and very much enjoy living in Hopkinton.

I want to continue serving you on the Board of Assessors, and I respectfully ask for your vote on Monday, May 21st.

Missing and Endangered Child

At 2:25 a.m. today, 15-year-old Shantel Van Voorhis took her 4 month old son, Jacob Van Voorhis, from DARE Family services in Newburyport where they were both residing. Shantel left without Jacob’s antibiotic for an ear infection, and he is on special soy formula. It is unknown if the child is in a baby seat and she left his diaper bag behind.

Shantel has ties to Holyoke and Springfield, MA. She might be in the company of Jonathan Heredia, who may be operating a gray, 1998 Honda CRV, Massachusetts registration 4ZN892, which was seen earlier today in the area of DARE Family services in Newburyport.

If located, please contact the Newburyport Police Department at 978-462-4411 or dial 911.

Candidate for Board of Library Trustees

My fellow citizens,

I am seeking a seat on the Library Board of Trustees. I have been a board member on 3 separate occasions, once appointed by the Selectmen and twice by vote. I served as co-chair of the board for one term. I have been a Library volunteer since 2006, and I am a member of the Friends of the Library. I have established a very good working relationship with the library director and staff. I bring experience, leadership, and commitment to this office and I ask for your support at the polls on May 21st. Your vote matters!

Support for Michael King

To the Editor:

I am writing in support of Michael King to be re-elected to the Hopkinton Board of Health. I have had the pleasure of serving with Michael on the Board of Health over the last year. He is thoughtful, detail oriented, and his science background makes him a perfect fit for the work of the Board. The Board of Health has had significant turnover over the last several years. Michael ran and was elected for a one-year unfulfilled turn. It takes time to understand all the various issues that come before the Board; Michael’s experience over the last year makes him uniquely qualified to continue in this role. Please join me in voting for Michael and returning him to the Board of Health on May 21st.

State Police Payroll Director Arraigned for Alleged Misappropriation of $23,900 in Funds

FRAMINGHAM – April23, 2018 -- Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan reports that Denise Ezekiel, 49, of Holbrook, was arraigned today in Framingham District Court on one count of larceny over $250 in connection with an alleged misappropriation of $23,900 in Massachusetts State Police payroll funds through her position as the agency’s Payroll Director.

Judge Martine Carroll released the defendant on personal recognizance and ordered the defendant to stay away from, and have no contact with, any potential witnesses in this case. The next scheduled hearing is June 4, 2018.

On November 1, 2017, Massachusetts State Police began investigating the misappropriation of Massachusetts State Police payroll funds after a financial discrepancy was discovered during a report query run on October 30, 2017. A further examination of payroll records allegedly revealed that Denise Ezekiel had been receiving unauthorized fund transfers to her personal bank accounts in the form of travel/training reimbursements. The subsequent investigation allegedly revealed that there were no supporting documents for the reimbursements and that the payment transfers occurred on various bi-weekly pay periods beginning July 23, 2016 through October 28, 2017. Computer generated payroll records also allegedly revealed twenty- nine separate entries for travel/training reimbursements which were paid to Ezekiel's automatic deposit/personal bank accounts. These payments varied in amounts from $500.00 to $950.00 and were allegedly paid to Ms. Ezekiel through her department employee account for a total amount of $23,900.

Ms. Ezekiel was placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Charges were filed against Ezekiel on March 6, 2018.

This charge is an allegation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This case is being investigated by the Massachusetts State Police and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. The prosecutor assigned to this case is Assistant District Attorney Doug Cannon. Today’s arraignment was handled by Assistant District Attorney Mary F.P. O’Neill.

All ages and abilities are welcome to choose from 1, 2, or 3 of these exciting activities. The event also offers an Aquathon "Splash and Dash" component, where participants "splash" in the competitive 1-mile swim and immediately "dash" in either the 5K or 10K run (chosen by the participant).

Board of Health Candidate - U

My name is Rick Jacobs. I am a physician and I am running for the Board of Health. My wife Trish and I came to Hopkinton as newlyweds 35 years ago. After graduating from UMass Medical School, I served as Chairman of the Department of Radiology at what is now UMass Memorial Medical Center.

After two decades of clinical practice, I joined a large medical research company, PAREXEL International, and was fortunate to be able to stay right here in Hopkinton as young parent of four pre-teen kids. During my tenure as Chief Medical Officer and SVP, my division managed the research of medicines leading to 83 regulatory approvals, mostly from the FDA; these included 15 Breakthrough Therapy approvals which, by definition, were medicines considered by the FDA to be the most important medicines that were undergoing research in the United States. Some of these immunotherapies have since become “household” names due to the dramatic successes in the treatment of cancer. During this part of my career, I met directly with the FDA multiple times and became intimately familiar with some of the most rigorous government regulations and associated auditing methods.

My four kids are now adults scattered across the country, and Hopkinton remains my home. I currently serve on the Hopkinton Cultural Council (HCC), the marketing committee of the Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA), coach for the Hopkinton boys varsity tennis team and several local non-profit advisory boards.

I believe that my healthcare, research and regulatory experience which served to improve the lives of large populations of people with some of the severest disease worldwide as well my dedication to the Hopkinton community makes me uniquely a qualified candidate to serve on the Hopkinton Board of Health.

Favors Meg Tyler for School Committee

Editor,

I am confidently recommending support of Meg Tyler for School Committee. Meg is a Professor in Humanities at Boston University, two time Fulbright awardee, and the parent of two children in our district. Smart, articulate and insightful are words I would use without hesitation when describing Meg.

Meg has been an active member of our community in local organizations and committees, and has a good understanding of how our local government works, including the fiscal challenges we are currently facing.

As a parent who has demonstrated her ability to effectively advocate for positive changes, and a passionate educator, Meg will bring a valuable balanced perspective to this School Committee position. Meg has a vested interest in ensuring our schools stay strong and meet the needs of all students as well as those of our community.

Please join me in voting for Meg on May 21st.

Board of Health Candidate  I -D - C

My name is Michael King and I am running for re-election to the Board of Health for a 3 year term.

The Board of Health plays a vital role in our community by working to control the spread of disease, to enforce sanitary codes, and to protect the environment.

For the last year, I have been able to bring my knowledge and experience to address various items brought before the Board of Health. I am a Process Development Scientist with many years of experience working in the Biotechnology Industry. My work has provided me with valuable experience solving open ended problems as well as exposure to environmental health and safety policies.

Since moving to Hopkinton, I have been involved in various activities and aspects of town government.  Initially, I participated in the zoning advisory committee to help draft zoning bylaws. I am currently active in the Hopkinton Democratic Town Committee and am serving on the Board of Health. As I continue to become involved in town activities, I am constantly reminded of the many reasons why my wife and I chose to move to Hopkinton to raise our family. I am invested in this community and am passionate about the environmental issues that affect our town.

I would be honored to be re-elected to the Board of Health. I respectfully ask that on May 21st you vote for me, Michael King, for the Board of Health.

Planning Board Candidate - R - C

I’m Mark Hyman, candidate for Planning Board, and I’m asking for your support.

My wife Carolyn, son Michael (14) and I became Hopkinton residents in 2013. Like many other families, we chose Hopkinton because of the wonderful character of the town and the award-winning schools. I want to help preserve those exceptional qualities for future generations by thoughtfully and proactively managing residential and business growth in town. Through its careful review of individual projects and by continuing to refine and implement the 2017 Master Plan, the Planning Board plays a vital role in achieving that goal.

I’ve helped Hopkinton address land use and zoning issues as a member of the Board of Appeals for four years, including serving as Chair since 2015. I’ve also served on the Zoning Advisory Committee since 2016 and attended seminars on Massachusetts land use laws and regulations. I first became interested in land use many years ago in Maryland, where I helped organize a group of residents to reach an agreement with a developer on adapting a nearby planned commercial development to balance residential and commercial concerns.

Outside of town government, I volunteer with the Hopkinton schools, support an ongoing event for the special needs community with the HPD, and am a member of the Hopkinton Sportsmen’s Association.

In my professional life, I serve as a senior counsel for AbbVie, a biopharmaceutical company, where I advise senior management and scientific teams on patent and other legal issues. With close to twenty years of experience, I’ve learned how to work with diverse groups to find creative resolutions to complex problems.

All too often, land use issues can become contentious and divisive, yet I believe that the vast majority of our town shares the goal of preserving Hopkinton’s character into the future. I’d like to bring my experience to the Planning Board to find productive ways of moving our town forward. Please join me at: https://www.facebook.com/markforhopkinton/

I respectfully ask for your vote on May 21

Massachusetts State Police Investigating Mattapoisett Fatal, Driver Identified

This morning at about 1:00 a.m., State Police from the Bourne Barracks responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 195 East in Mattapoisett which resulted in the death of the operator.

Dave McGillivray Runs His 46th Straight Boston Marathon – at Night – After Spending Day Directing World-Famous Road Race in support of the Martin Richard Foundation’s Team MR8

BOSTON (April 17, 2018) – Boston Marathon Race Director Dave McGillivray ran his 46th Boston Marathon last night, shortly after completing his duties directing the world’s most famous road race.

In addition to directing major, competitive road races like the B.A.A. Boston Marathon and the TD Beach to Beacon 10K in Maine as the owner of DMSE Sports, Inc., McGillivray, 63, is known for his feats of endurance to raise money for worthy causes. He ran from Medford, Oregon to Medford, Mass., in 1978 and in February completed the World Marathon Challenge by running seven marathons in seven days on seven continents, making Monday’s marathon his ninth marathon of this year already.

Last night he ran the Boston Marathon on behalf of Team MR8 to raise money for the Martin Richard Foundation, created in memory of the 8-year-old victim of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Martin’s parents, Bill and Denise Richard, were among the gathering of family and friends – including legendary runners Meb Keflezighi and Joan Benoit Samuelson – who greeted McGillivray at the finish.

On Friday, McGillivray presented the Richards with a “mock” check in the amount of $112,000 representing the money raised for MR8 during his World Marathon Challenge and his Boston Marathon fundraising efforts.

Encountering the same cold, heavy rain conditions that 27,000 runners faced earlier in the day for the first 18 miles of his run and temperatures in the 40’s and low 50’s, McGillivray was joined on his night-time marathon run by Eric Gilsenan, Nick Wishart, Brent Richardson, Matt Auger, Jason Todd and Josh Cohen. He set out in Hopkinton around 5 p.m. and crossed the finish line on Boylston St. at 10 p.m.

McGillivray also recently published a children’s book focused on his first two Boston Marathon runs as a teenager and the obstacles he faced.

“Dream Big: A True Story of Courage and Determination” is a nonfiction picture book based on his 2006 autobiography “The Last Pick,” in which McGillivray shares his unique, true story about reaching deep and showing extreme determination in the face of doubt, disappointment and loss. It was launched in Boston last month and is for sale on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other online stores. Contributed content.
