Happy Hanukkah

December 12, 2017 -- The photographer was late to the lighting of the first "candle" on the menorah at dusk this evening, the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Hanukka. Nonetheless, the footprints in the snow from the gazebo to the lights, and around the menorah, bear silent witness to those who were on time for the lighting, songs and prayers. Actress Maylim Bialik explains the holiday here.

The Little Railroad That Could

December 12, 2017 -- Above, a fierce looking train that travels on the Grafton-Upton Railroad line has a speed limit of 5 mph, and has received new crossing signals, track, and a new track-switch at the crossing in Upton, where owner Jon Delli-Priscoli has built a major transfer yard, where aggregate is brought in and apparently transferred into smaller containers for distribution. Mr. Delli-Priscolli also owns Edaville Railroad. Below, also taken this morning, are tracks for Providence to Worcester Railroad in Rochdale, which also hauls aggregate, but over a farther distance with longer trains and at a much faster speed.

The Massachusetts State Police Dive Team today assisted the US Coast Guard and other agencies in the search for the clam harvesting vessel Misty Blue.

December 5, 2017 -- The Massachusetts State Police Dive Team today assisted the US Coast Guard and other agencies in the search for the clam harvesting vessel Misty Blue approximately 10 miles off Nantucket.

Troopers deployed side scan sonar today. Through the use of that sonar search teams located a large object underwater believed to be the vessel. Weather and ocean conditions prevented troopers from diving onto the target. Conditions tomorrow are expected to be similar and will preclude diving. The current plan is for State Police divers to return to that area on Thursday and dive onto the target detected by sonar to confirm whether it is the vessel and assist further as needed.

On Saturday, Fay's Upper School and Lower School Robotics Teams competed in a local FIRST LEGO League qualifying event at Assabet Valley Regional Technical School. Thirty-six teams of fourth through eighth graders from around Massachusetts competed at this site, as students shared their innovative solutions to a problem within the Human Water Cycle. The Lower School's project involved using recycled wastewater to build a hydroponic vegetable farm at a wastewater treatment plant, while the Upper School team's "Roofidifier" involved turning the roof of a house into a large dehumidifier to collect water out of the air. A portion of the competition included a robot game, in which the Upper School team placed 6th out of 36 teams present. While neither Fay team received a "Golden Ticket" to advance to the next round of competition, both groups put in many long hours of work outside of their normal fall obligations, and they performed at a level that exceeded last year's accomplishments. Congratulations to both teams on their hard work and wonderful ideas! ~Fay FB

Troopers Arrest Man After Finding Loaded Gun, Pills During Revere Car Stop

Massachusetts State Troopers arrested a Boston man early Friday morning after a Trooper stopped his Mercedes wagon for motor vehicle violations in Revere and found an illegally-possessed, loaded handgun in the vehicle. The Trooper also found a bag containing a large quantity of pills in the vehicle.

The motor vehicle stop was effected by Trooper Jennifer Penton at 1:30 a.m. after she observed the 2004 Mercedes E500 wagon being operated on Broadway well above the posted 25 mph speed limit. Trooper Penton also determined that the vehicle was 12 months overdue for an inspection sticker.

After stopping the vehicle near the intersection with Taft Street, Trooper Penton identified the driver and sole occupant as RANDY N. BOSWELL, 38, of Boston, and made observations based on her training and experience that BOSWELL was acting extremely nervous. When asked, BOSWELL could not produce the registration for the vehicle. The Trooper also observed several plastic baggies, consistent with the packaging of illegal narcotics, in the door compartment. Troopers Devon Surian and Alexander Smith responded to back up the stop, and BOSWELL was asked to exit the vehicle.

While Troopers Surian and Smith monitored the driver, Trooper Penton located, under the driver’s seat, a sandwich bag containing 36 pills. Additionally, in the center of the vehicle, in close proximity to the driver’s seat, she located a soft-sided cooler-style lunch bag that was partially unzipped. She picked up the bag and noticed it appeared to be weighted down on one side. Upon opening the bag, Trooper Penton observed the handle of a handgun. She immediately returned to where the suspect was standing and placed him in handcuffs.

Trooper Smith seized the handgun, a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber “Taurus,” and determined that its magazine contained 10 rounds of ammunition. Troopers determined that BOSWELL did not have a license to carry a firearm.

BOSWELL was transported to the State Police-Revere Barracks, where he was booked on the following offenses:

Unlawful possession of a firearm;
Unlawful possession of a loaded firearm;
Unlawful possession of ammunition; and
Unlawful possession of a Class C narcotic.
The suspect additionally was cited for failure to inspect a motor vehicle, speeding, and not having a motor vehicle registration in his possession.

He is expected to be arraigned in Chelsea District Court today. The pills in the baggie were submitted to the State Police Crime Laboratory for analysis.

Lowell Man Pleads Guilty in Connection With Charitable Donation Scam

WOBURN – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Woburn Chief of Police Robert Ferullo have announced that Zachary Noonan, 26, of Lowell, pled guilty today in Middlesex Superior Court to three counts of larceny over $250 in connection with running a charitable donation scam which over a three year period netted nearly $76,000 intended for charities falsely represented as those that provide support for cancer patients and research, firefighters, wounded veterans, youth sports and hunger prevention.

Judge John Lu sentenced the defendant to three years probation and ordered the defendant to pay restitution. Judge Lu also ordered the defendant to seek mental health treatment.

“With the holiday season approaching, many of us plan to generously donate our time and money to organizations that provide services to those in need,” said District Attorney Ryan. “Unfortunately, scams like these are designed to take advantage of the good intentions of others. It is important to remember that prospective donors should always verify that they are donating to a legitimate organization in advance by checking to see that the organization has a valid website, phone number and other available contact information. If anyone feels that they may have been a victim of a charity scam, do not hesitate to contact local law enforcement officials.”

Woburn Chief of Police Ferullo added, “I am grateful to the officers in the Woburn Police Department and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office for their diligent and dedicated efforts as their investigation uncovered the size and scope of the defendant’s charitable scams. Zachary Noonan preyed upon what is best in all of us; our desire to aid the vulnerable and assist brave men and women who risk their lives every day, and with today’s plea the defendant acknowledges the consequences of his actions.”

From 2012 until approximately 2015 the defendant worked for an advertising company where he solicited funds and sold advertising space to benefit non-profit organizations. Upon termination of his employment the defendant kept his contacts list which included individuals and businesses that had previously donated funds or purchased advertising space to benefit those organizations.

The defendant used that contact information to solicit donations for false charities that he set up to intentionally sound like legitimate charity organizations. These included, “The Jimmy Fund for Kids," “Volunteer Fireman,” “New England Wounded Veterans,” “New England Hunger Assoc.” and “Northeast Amateur Athletic Union.”

The fraud was uncovered by Woburn Police in February of 2017 when one of the victims, who had made a $100 donation to the “The Volunteer Fireman,” attempted to contact the organization through a website and phone number provided by the defendant. The victim discovered that the phone number was disconnected and there was no existing website.

Over three years the defendant deposited a total of nearly $76,000 in donations intended for charitable purposes. A review of the records of these accounts revealed that the defendant withdrew money from these accounts for his own personal benefit and that no funds were ever used for their intended purposes.

Noonan was arraigned in connection with the scams on October 6, 2017, in Middlesex Superior Court.

The prosecutor assigned to this case was Assistant District Attorney Christopher Tarrant.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan partners with local police departments, elder services and community-based banks to educate individuals on how to stay safe, avoid scams and theft and report abuse. If you think you have been a victim of a scam, speak up, and tell someone and report the crime to a law enforcement authority.

Project restored historically significant library dating back to 1895, expanded size to 25,000 square feet

Hopkinton, Mass. (November 28, 2017) – CTA Construction congratulates the Town of Hopkinton for the completion of its renovation and expansion of the historic Hopkinton Public Library, a structure initially constructed in 1895. The renovation was aimed at preserving the building for a new generation of readers while protecting its historic features and architecture. In addition to the historic renovation, CTA completed an expansion of the library’s facilities, expanding its footprint to 25,000 square feet from 5,783 square feet and adding new state-of-the-art technology.

“The renovation of historically significant buildings like the Hopkinton Public Library required significant planning and the input of the local historical commission, community leaders, and Hopkinton residents,” said Paul DuRoss, Principal at CTA Construction. “The community and project team really came through and made this library a modern facility that still respects its heritage. We’re proud to have delivered it to Hopkinton.”

The completion of the renovation and expansion was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the front steps of the library, attended by public officials and residents eager for a first look at the building. Attendees included Town Clerk Connor Deagan, Selectman John Coutinho, Sen. Karen Spilka, Town Manager Norman Khumalo, President of Library Trustees Susan Porter, interim Library Director Deb Irven, and Library Director Heather Backman. The ribbon-cutting ceremony signaled the official opening of the library to the public after its temporary operations in a rented location on South Street.

The expanded building features new meeting space, handicap accessibility, computer terminals, an improved children’s room, a teen room, and space for library programs and after-hours community events. Hopkinton voters approved a debt-exclusion override in May 2014 to fund the project, which was budgeted at $11.8 million. That cost was supplemented by a $4.5 million state grant. Contributed story. Busty and the Bass Return to Boston

Hello Friends and Colleagues,
I'll keep this short and sweet. I know many of you probably knew this months ago, perhaps even before Elaine and I did. But for those of you that don't follow them on social media or are a luddite like me and don't use social media, I thought I would send out a quick note to let you know that my son Mike's band, Busty and the Bass, is returning to Boston.

They will be appearing at The Paradise, 967 Comm Ave in Boston on Friday Dec. 8th. Doors are at 8 PM, show starts at 9 but there is an opening act so they will likely hit the stage after 10. Tickets are thru TicketMaster which you can get here. Their last show in Boston sold out in advance so if you are thinking of going don’t wait until the last minute. I got a bunch of somewhat frantic phone calls the night of that show looking for tickets.

If you don’t know their music, you can find them on all of the major streaming services as well as on iTunes and Amazon Music. If you don’t use any of those services you can find some free short clips from their latest album “Uncommon Good” on SoundCloud as well as some of their other music. Here are some links.

From the Album Uncommon Good”:  "Closer" , "Up Top" , "Common Ground"

From the EP “Lift” "Stages"

Hope to see you there. We’ll likely be at T’s Pub next to the Paradise before the show. Stop by, I’ll buy you a drink!

--Mike McCann

EDITOR'S NOTE: While touring in 2014, Mike brought his band to his hometown of Upton for a surprise performance at the Rose Garden. Above, a screenshot from the HopNews video of the event. Click it to see the video. Mike was the bugler for the monthly "Taps" ceremonies in Hopkinton. His father was Hopkinton's go to  IT professional consultant before the position became full time.

Victim Identified in Fatal Crash in Andover The victim in this mornings crash on Route 495 in Andover, has been identified as Maureen Bonnell, 59, of Haverhill.

Five-vehicle Crash Ends in One Fatality

ANDOVER November 21, 2017 -- This morning, at approximately 6:40 a.m., troopers from the State Police Barracks in Andover responded to reports of a crash on Route 495 southbound, just prior to Route 93 in Andover. Upon arrival, Trooper Thomas Hollow discovered that a 2010 Honda CRV, driven by a 59-year-old woman from Haverhill, had struck a 2015 GMC Sierra pickup, from behind. The GMC was then pushed into a 2003 Toyota 4Runner, which was then pushed into a 2003 Chevrolet Impala, which was pushed into a 2012 Mazda 3.

The driver and only occupant of the Honda CRV was determined to be deceased at the scene, as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the GMC Sierra, a 57-year-old man from South Berwick, Maine suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Lawrence General Hospital. The driver of the Toyota 4Runner, a 51-year-old man from Newton, New Hampshire, the driver of the Chevrolet Impala, a 22-year-old man from North Andover, and the driver of the Mazda 3, a 54-year-old woman from Farmington, New Hampshire, were not injured.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that traffic was slow or at near standstill prior to the crash, due to regular commuters, when the Honda CRV struck the GMC Sierra at a speed greater than that of the other traffic.  During the incident, the right two lanes were closed until the scene was cleared at approximately 8:54 a.m.

The remaining facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by troopers assigned to the State Police Andover Barracks. Troop A Headquarters, State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section (CARS), State Police Crime Scene Services Section (CSSS), Andover Fire Department, Office of the State Medical Examiner, and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) all assisted on scene.

Success Has Its Limits
Resident Complains of Overcrowding

by Robert Falcione

November 20,2017 --  Shortly before 8:00 pm on Friday, November 10, 2017, Hopkinton Public Safety Dispatch received a call from a woman who had left Cornell's Irish Pub and gone to another bar, and who complained that Cornell's was overcrowded. Although the staff refused comment regarding this report, some patrons spoke off of the record.
They agreed that the overcrowding happened quickly, with football fans from the winning Hiller football game against Milton seeking collective shelter from arguably the coldest spot in Hopkinton, the Hughes Stadium behind Hopkinton Middle School.
Add that element of football success to the fact that brewery owner Ted Twinney and the crew and patrons from Start Line Brewery were there to celebrate the First Anniversary of their opening in 2016, a successful year.

Finding the pub well over the designated capacity of 77 -- conflicting estimates had it between 120-130 patrons -- Fire Dept officials ordered the building emptied and to start the count over until the limit was reached. From then on, they only let one person in when one person left.

Lt. William Miller called Building Inspector Charles Kadlik, who advised of the choices to lower the capacity or it would be shut down.

Mr. Kadlik, in a letter to owner Ellen Scanlon, advised that he would count this as a warning, but if there were any further violations, he said he had the options of a fine, and/or he could order sprinkler systems installed. This law was enacted following the 100 deaths in the Station night club fire in Rhode Island, where there was no fire suppression, not adequate exits for the capacity, and most of the patrons all tried to exit through the front door.

Worse than that, the Coconut Grove night club fire in Boston in 1942 took 492 lives. It led to the enactment of modern building codes, including clearly marked exits and doors that swing out.

Unlike the Station, Cornell's does not have live music, is a short one-story, has four exits doors, and about a dozen nearly ground-level windows. File photo.

Chelmsford Man Arraigned in Connection with Highway Worker’s Death

WOBURN – November 20, 2017 -- Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan has announced that James Scoville, 33, of Chelmsford, was arraigned today in Middlesex Superior Court in connection with a 2016 motor vehicle crash that resulted in the death of Hi-Way Safety Systems, Inc. worker Thomas O'Day, 52, of East Bridgewater. Scoville was charged with motor vehicle homicide and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury.

Clerk Magistrate Michael Day set bail at $2,500 cash and ordered the defendant to not consume alcohol and to be subject to random screens and to not drive during the pendency of the case. The next scheduled hearing in this case is January 5, 2018.

On Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Massachusetts State Police responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash on 93 Northbound in Medford. Upon arrival State Police located Thomas O’Day who had sustained life-threatening injuries. O’Day was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. A second male sustained non-life-threatening injuries and he was transported to an area hospital, treated and released.

Through their investigation State Police learned that both victims were employees of Hi-Way Safety Systems and were performing painting work in a lane that was closed due to the roadwork. Authorities were informed that the defendant allegedly drove through the lane closure before striking Thomas O’Day and then crashing his motor vehicle into a construction truck which contained the second male victim. The defendant remained on scene. State Police then allegedly observed the defendant to be under the influence of alcohol.

These charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

State Police Investigating Pedestrian Fatal Crash on Route 3 in Weymouth

Tonight at about 6:15 p.m., State Police from the Norwell Barracks responded to a crash on Route 3 Northbound, north of Exit 15 in Weymouth which resulted in the death of a pedestrian.

State Police received a call from a motorist about a pedestrian walking in the roadway on the ramp from Route 18 (Exit 16) towards Route 3 Northbound in Weymouth.  While responding to the area, State Police received another call from a motorist reporting that he had just struck a pedestrian on Route 3 Northbound, between Exit 15 and 16.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Carol Leurini indicates that a 59-year-old man from Cranston, R.I., was traveling on Route 3 Northbound in a 2006 Honda Accord when his vehicle struck the pedestrian in the left travel lane.  As a result of the collision, the adult male pedestrian was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.
