UniBank_Hopkinton Community Giving:

Beginning in September and running through November 15, UniBank’s Community Giving Program has encouraged customers and the general public to come vote from a selection of seven community organizations that were identified by UniBank. In total $10,500 was given to Hopkinton organizations as part of the program.

    

WHITINSVILLE, MA – November 15 marked the final date to vote in UniBank’s Community Giving program at the bank’s Hopkinton branch. The program, which ran for two months beginning in September, was the bank’s way of celebrating the one-year anniversary of its Hopkinton branch while offering support to Hopkinton organizations. The Bank hosted a wrap-up event with the organizations on Wednesday, November 16 to announce the results.


UniBank’s Community Giving program has encouraged customers and the general public to come vote from a selection of seven community organizations that were identified by UniBank. In total $10,500 was pledged to the Hopkinton community as part of the program.

 

Just under 700 votes were tallied in support of the seven community organizations. The program promised significant cash donations to the top three organizations receiving the most votes. First place was pledged $5,000, second place was pledged $2,500, and third place was pledged $1,000. All organizations that did not receive first, second or third place donations were all pledged $500.

The results announced at the event were as follows:

 

Project Just Because Food Pantry - $5,000, Hopkinton Public Library - $2,500, Serenity House (SMOC) - $1,000

Organizations receiving $500: Michael Carter Lisnow Respite Center, Hopkinton Education Foundation, Hopkinton Center for the Arts, Hopkinton Senior Center.

 

“This being the season of Thanksgiving, we couldn’t think of a better time to announce the results of our Community Giving program,” stated Doris Hamburger, Vice President and Branch Manager of UniBank’s Hopkinton branch.

West Springfield-Marilyn Louise (Varnum) Gallo, 83, died Sunday, November 6, 2016 at home. She was born in Framingham, MA on March 22, 1933 to the late Walter and Olive (Jean) Varnum. She grew up in Hopkinton, MA attended local schools and was a 1951 graduate of Hopkinton High School where she is in the Athletic Hall of Fame. Marilyn and her husband Paul owned and operated Zip Carriers in Westfield and retired in 1993.

 

After retirement she enjoyed bowling and playing dominos with the Domino Girls. She was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church in West Springfield. She leaves her husband of 35 years Paul J. Gallo, her children William Stickney and his wife Denise of Wimauma, FL, Mark Stickney of Hopkinton, David Stickney and Deborah Riley of Sandwich, Elizabeth Pedersen of Westfield and Karen Krause and her husband Gregory of Florence, MA, 20 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Marilyn also leaves her step-children Lynn Savage and her husband Paul of Westfield, Paul Gallo and Ruth Marelli of Westfield, Kathryn Gogol and her husband David of Alpine, Wyoming, Stephen Gallo and his wife Jo Ann of Westfield, Joann Laplante and her husband Timothy of Southwick. She was pre-deceased by her step-children Christine Hatton and David Gallo and her siblings Walter, Richard and Donald Varnum, Jean Donovan and Lorraine Hunt.

 

The funeral for Marilyn was held on Thursday, November 10th at 9 am from the Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 am in Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church, 127 Holyoke Road, Westfield. Burial will be private in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Calling hours were held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-7 pm. Donations in memory of Marilyn may be made to Feed the Children P.O. Q. What is black and white and read all over?

A. A newspaper!

        That was a pun, as I remember it, from a 1955 issue of My Weekly Reader, a news publication that offered world and national news of the day, scientific and medical breakthroughs, as well as educational and entertaining features, to students across the country.

        A third grade student in 1955 would have learned in My Weekly Reader about the development by Jonas Salk, of the world-changing polio vaccine that saved hundreds of thousands of children from the ravages of that paralyzing virus, before taking their place in the long line in the school gym, a line that snaked to the waiting school nurse for their own injection.

         Hopkinton students have had their own local news source, the online-only, Hopkinton High School Press ( www.HHSPress.org ), for a few years now.  But  the Journalism Class and Club have brought back the excitement from days of yore of opening and holding a printed paper with local news and stunning achievements about their friends and their school.

        The paper, online and print, is chock full of interesting stories about  school issues -- school start time, turf fields -- but also news leading up to the most historic election of a lifetime, too (save your ISSUE 1 copy in a warm, dry place).

Taxi Strikes State Cruiser - Flees Scene

 

BOSTON - November 15, 2016 - Massachusetts State Police are investigating a hit and run crash in Boston in which an MSP cruiser was struck by a taxi.

 

At approximately 2:50 am today the taxi struck a fully-marked State Police cruiser at Commonwealth Avenue at Berkeley Street. The crash also caused two other vehicles to be struck, one of them parked, before the taxi fled the scene. The crash also caused damage to a light pole and fence.

 

There were no injuries.

 

State Police are investigating to determine the identification of the cab company whose taxi was involved and the identification of the driver

10:37 am A Fruit Street resident reported that while her eight year-old daughter was walking home from a neighbors house a man in a tan vehicle stopped and asked if she wanted a ride. She then proceeded to run home. Two officers checked the area but could not locate the vehicle.

8:39 am A caller from Pond Street complained about construction on their only day of rest from the noise. Officer Panagiotis Hontzeas advised that they stopped for the day.


Saturday, November 12, 2016

4:56 pm A caller reported an aggressive and erratic operator on Hayden Rowe Street. Two officers checked the area with a negative find.

4:32 pm A motorist reported that an erratic operator almost ran him off of the roadway on West Main Street. Officer Brian Sanchioni checked the area but did not locate the vehicle.

9:42 am A motorist reported that an erratic operator crossed the double yellow line multiple times on West Main Street. Officer Stephen Buckley searched the area with a negative find on the vehicle.

6:53 pm Officers assisted with a motor vehicle accident with personal injury on Route 495.

2:19 pm A caller from Ash Street reported that hunters were on property that cannot be hunted on. Two officers spoke with the individuals and advised that hunting was permitted there.

9:12 am A resident of Valentine Road complained about speeding vehicles that were being detoured through their neighborhood. Officer John Corridan responded to evaluate the traffic.

Milford Regional Announces Change in Pediatric Services

Milford, Mass. — Milford Regional Medical Center has filed notification to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health that it will no longer provide inpatient pediatric services. However, pediatric patients will continue to receive excellent care from pediatric physicians who are on the medical staffs of both Milford Regional and Boston Children's Hospital alongside our emergency medicine physicians in a designated pediatric section of the emergency department.


After much careful thought and deliberation, the decision to close inpatient pediatric services was based upon low patient admissions. Pediatric admissions accounted for approximately 1 percent of Milford Regional's total patient admissions in FY 2016. While Milford Regional has 10 licensed patient beds, most are generally not in service, and pediatric admissions have been declining for years. Based upon these low numbers, Milford Regional determined that it wasn't feasible to continue operating an inpatient pediatric unit.


However, parents can count on Milford Regional's collaborative arrangements with Boston Children's that ensures a continuation of the high quality care they have come to expect for their children at the Medical Center. Today, the majority of pediatric care offered at community hospitals is treated within a 24-hour period. Adapting to these changes in pediatric medicine, most of our pediatric patients will be cared for in a pediatric section of the newly constructed emergency department. The spacious rooms that are only one year old comfortably accommodate the child with his/her parents and are equipped with the most up-to-date medical systems. And as has always been the case, when specialized pediatric care is needed, transfers to tertiary care facilities in Boston or Worcester will continue to take place seamlessly.


As part of the notification to DPH, a public hearing will be held on the discontinuation of services plan.


"Through our collaborative arrangement with Boston Children's and other tertiary care facilities in our region, Milford Regional remains committed to providing the very best care to our pediatric patients," says Edward J. Kelly, president and CEO of Milford Regional. "We are confident that the transition of care to the pediatric area of our new emergency department will allow us to continue to provide the highest quality care to our pediatric patients."

5:03 pm A caller reported a three car motor vehicle accident on Route 495 with one of the females involved being pregnant and possibly going into labor. Two officers responded to assist and advised that she was transported to the hospital.
4:23 pm A resident of Downey Street reported coming home to find a man trying to gain entry into his home then fleeing the area on a skateboard.
3:46 pm A Valentine Road resident reported vehicles speeding in the area and was concerned for the safety of kids walking. Officer John Corridan advised that the heavier traffic was due to construction in the area.
2:50 pm The manager of a Main Street gas station reported that someone left the area without paying for gas. Officer Alex Cruzvergara responded to write a report.

Veterans' Day honors all men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

 

 Originally known as Armistice Day to remember the end of World War I, it has survived a name change and a Monday holiday designation. On Friday November 11, the American Legion Post 202 will recognize all Hopkinton Veterans, and especially those who died this past year. The ceremony will be held at the senior center, and in keeping with tradition, will start promptly at 11:00 AM. 

     In the evening of that day, the Hopkinton Veterans Celebration Committee holds its' annual appreciation dinner at the Woodville Rod and Gun Club. All veterans with a Hopkinton connection are invited, and the doors open at 5:30 PM.

Troopers Pursue, Capture Suspects from Connecticut Stabbing and Carjacking
   

November 10, 2016 -- At approximately 10:20 a.m. the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Sturbridge relayed a BOLO (Be On the Lookout alert) for a dark-colored Nissan Rogue wanted in connection with a crash, stabbing, and carjacking that had just occurred in Thompson, Connecticut.

Several minutes later, Massachusetts State Police Trooper Jeffrey Gilbert from the Troop C Community Action Team observed the suspect vehicle on Route 395. With the cruiser following, the suspect vehicle got off Route 395 and onto Route 20 in Auburn, where it came to a stop. As Trooper Gilbert pulled up, the operator of the Rogue tried to ram the cruiser, and then drove into an adjacent parking lot, tried to ram a second cruiser, and fled back onto Route 20 toward Worcester. Troop C Headquarters authorized a pursuit of the vehicle.

The pursuit continued through Worcester and ended on Papagin Terrace, a cul-de-sac, where the suspect vehicle tried to turn around in a driveway in his continuing efforts to elude capture. The suspect vehicle struck a cruiser and a car parked at one of the residences there. Troopers took two suspects, a male and a female, into custody without incident. There were no injuries to troopers or to suspects.

The suspects will be transported to the State Police Barracks in Holden for processing and further investigation. The scene on Papagin Terrace is currently being processed by troopers from the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Connecticut State Police are on-scene as well, as are troopers from the State Police Detective Unit for Worcester County. The suspect vehicle is being towed to a secure State Police facility in furtherance of the investigation.

The victim of the stabbing and carjacking in Connecticut has reportedly suffered serious injuries. Any questions regarding that incident should be directed to Connecticut State Police.

No further information is being released at this time.

Free Pasta Dinner at St. Paul’s November 30
 

HOPKINTON, MASS. (November 10, 2016) – The November Community Pasta Supper at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 61 Wood Street (Rte. 135) will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30. All are welcome to this event, which is being supported by the churches of the Hopkinton Christian Service Connection. This pasta supper is held for the community on the last Wednesday of every month.

The meal will feature pasta (gluten free available), vegetarian tomato sauce, meatballs on the side, green salad, bread, beverages, and dessert.
The pasta supper is free, although donations will be accepted.

5:06 pm A 911 caller reported that a pedestrian was either struck or fell out of a motor vehicle on Chestnut Street. Three officers responded and advised that it may have been a minor motor vehicle accident and two individuals refused treatment.


Monday November 7, 2016

9:58 pm Kids playing football on Fruit Street advised Officer John Corridan that a car had pulled up earlier and the operator threw eggs at them. The same vehicle then came back while he was on scene and the operator was given a civil violation for no license in possession.

5:40 pm Three officers responded to a two car motor vehicle accident with personal injury on West Main Street and advised that one individual was transported to the hospital.

     HELP! Trail Building Day

The newly-preserved Whitehall Woods property (203 Pond Street). Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT) has been deeded to 32 acres of open space and the Hopkinton Area Land Trust (HALT) has been granted the Conservation Restriction on the 32 acres. AmeriCorps member Lisa Long and Chelsea PolevyI, working with SVT are organizing a trail building day at this property-- we will be creating new trails, clearing existing trails, and possibly installing signage and removing invasive buckthorn.

Governor Baker Issues Statement on Presidential Election, Question 4

BOSTON—Today, Governor Charlie Baker released the following statement on the results of the 2016 Presidential Election:

“The people of Massachusetts deserve a federal government that works collaboratively to solve our nation’s problems and it is my hope that President-elect Donald Trump works quickly to unite our country after a divisive election. Our administration is eager to partner with the next administration to tackle the most pressing issues for our state, region and country.”

 

Tonight, Governor Charlie Baker released the following statement on Massachusetts Ballot Question 4, to legalize the recreational use of marijuana:

“Lt. Governor Polito and I are proud to have worked with an unprecedented bipartisan coalition that has voiced concerns with this proposal, and our administration will work closely with lawmakers, educators, and public safety and public health professionals to ensure this transition protects the interests of our communities and families."

November 8, 2016 - The reader may sense something a little different. Perhaps the upside-down copyright attribution. Perhaps cat-o-nine tails hanging upside-down. Perhaps they scrolled down and activated the mouse-over/switch image feature of the photo before knowing that the permanent image is upside-down, and the mouse-over image is the right-side up. Still waters are a great feature of a day.

The cement structures have been removed and the site work is at its beginning today on the DPW land upon which new building will be erected.
 
End of the Day


November 7, 2016 -- A lone cormorant on Hopkinton Reservoir, faces the setting sun at the end of the day with a full belly. It spends most of every day diving for fish, which gets it waterlogged, forcing the need to dry its wings in the sun before flying off.

12:27 am An anonymous caller reported an underage drinking party on Winter Street. Three officers responded and advised that they did not see any alcohol present.

12:16 am A caller from Dogwood Way reported a “ding, dong, ditch” at her residence. Three officers checked the area with a negative find.


Saturday, November 5, 2016

11:21 pm Three callers from Autumn Ridge Drive, Ryegrass Circle and Grandview Drive reported a “ding, dong, ditch” incident. Two officers checked the area but did not locate anyone suspicious.

6:47 pm Officer Panagiotis Hontzeas stopped a motor vehicle on Main Street and subsequently arrested a 60 year-old male from Hopkinton and charged him with OUI Liquor and Marked Lanes Violation.

5:30 pm A caller reported that a male urinated in a parking lot on Apple Tree Hill then left the area in his vehicle. Two officers checked the area but could not locate the individual.

5:05 pm Sgt. Scott vanRaalten spoke with a victim of a hit and run incident on Wood Street.

12:34 pm Officer Philip Powers advised that he confiscated some marijuana at the school.
