I am pleased to inform the citizens of our town that we are again putting on a Lumberjack Contest on September 18, 2016. If you were unable to attend last year's event, this will be another opportunity for you to participate in a unique sport not found in many athletic programs. Those who competed during our 300th celebration, win lose, or draw, are to be congratulated for persevering through cold and ice pellets.

This year's format will be different. The morning contest 11:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. will be for you to test your skills and compete for a lst place trophy. A strictly amateur show, you can sign up for events the morning of the contest.

The afternoon contest will be for people who compete on a regular basis throughout the country, and will be invitation only. Many of these participants will arrive in time to assist you with the amateur events.

A new twist from last year. Amateurs who win the axe throw and pulp toss events will be allowed to compete in the afternoon for prize money.

96 Year-old Berlin Man in Fatal Route 495 One-car Crash

August 21, 2016 -At 3:22 p.m. numerous 911 calls reported a one vehicle crash on the Route 495 northbound ramp at exit 26 in Berlin. Troopers from the State Police Barracks in Leominster responded and located a 2007 Ford Focus which had struck the rock wall on the ramp. The operator, a 96-year-old Berlin man, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The on-ramp to Route 495 northbound was closed for approximately one hour during the accident investigation. Troopers from the State Police barracks in Leominster, the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the Crime Scene Services Section and the Worcester State Police Detective Unit responded to the scene to assist with the crash. Also responding to assist were Berlin Fire and EMS, MassDoT and the Medical Examiners office.

Two TT Units Collide - Results in Life-Threatening Injuries

August 18, 2016 - At 0230 hrs today on Route 90 Eastbound in Auburn at the 91 mile marker a tractor-trailer unit rear-ended a second tractor-trailer, that one a flatbed trailer carrying building materials.

The operator of the Volvo tractor that struck the other truck from behind was entrapped in the cab and extricated by emergency responders. That operator, a 59-year-old New Jersey woman, suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to UMass Medical Center Lakeside. The operator of the flatbed TT, a 57-year-old Virginia man who was driving a Freightliner tractor, suffered minor injuries and was also transported by ambulance to an area hospital.

All eastbound lanes were closed for just over an hour, and partial lane closures remained in place until 7:35 a.m. The crash remains under investigation. No further information is being released at this time.

Middlesex Sheriff’s Office warns of arrest scam

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) is today warning residents of ongoing telephone scams in which perpetrators are posing as deputy sheriffs. “In recent days, we have received multiple reports of individuals threatening arrest for failure to pay outstanding bills or fines,” said Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian. “These are scams. No member of this office, or any legitimate law enforcement agency, will ever threaten arrest in such a manner.” In each case, the caller claimed to be a deputy sheriff, providing the recipient of the call with a name and badge number, and indicating either a warrant or a complaint had been issued for the individual’s arrest. Fortunately, in each of the recent cases reported to the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office, the recipients of the calls recognized them as scams. “For more than two years we have been warning residents of these growing arrest scams,” said Sheriff Koutoujian.

“It used to be that scammers preyed on people’s hopes, but today they are preying on their fears. By educating and alerting residents to these scams they can better protect themselves and their hard-earned money.” With an increase of these arrest scams, the MSO is offering the following tips: • Never give out your Social Security number or date of birth to anyone who contacts you; • Never provide any financial information (bank account, credit card numbers); • Never purchase a product (MoneyPak cards, gift cards, etc.) to pay a debt; • If a caller phoning about financial issues identifies themselves as a member of law enforcement, get their name, hang up the phone and call Information or look up the agency’s main telephone line. Then call the main number, ask for that officer by name and remain on the line to speak with them, but always remember a legitimate member of law enforcement will never demand money. Residents who receive similar calls in which individuals identify themselves as MSO deputies may contact the MSO’s Digital Forensics Unit at 978-495-7417 and are also encouraged to contact their local police department.

An Iliad unfolds in unlikely and poignant ways in each setting of this premiere run. After a sold out opening in a Sag Harbor junkyard, it now makes its way to Hopkinton, and uses a scattershot pile of granite slabs as its backdrop. In the waning light of day, an intimate audience of 35 gathers around a campfire to hear this breathtaking modern retelling of Homer’s classic, powerfully and singularly performed by Patrick Vincent Curran -- reflecting the manner in which Homer himself may have told the tale.

When suddenly The Poet drives up in a pickup truck, the magic of the evening begins to unfold, with the help of the muses, who appear in surprising ways. Audiences are drawn into the fateful clash between Achilles and Hector on the battlefields of the Trojan War by the unexpected use of the truck, a car and a drone, taking the story further out of the theatre and grounding it in the here and now. A litany of wars and battles, past and present, land a visceral blow to the senses that are done with deftness of humor, pathos, horror and humanity. When first presented as a work-in-progress at an historic veteran’s cemetery in Jersey City, last year, its gripping storytelling and unfolding surprises left audience members speechless.

The play, which brings sharp focus to the price of war and our current world, was written over a ten-year period in the aftermath of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Written as a means to talk about our country at war it combines the epic tale of the Trojan War with poignant contemporary references in a tour-de-force solo performance by an actor playing a character simply called The Poet. The Poet’s fate, tied to ours, is summed up in one of his early lines: “Every time I sing this song, I hope it’s the last time.” It has won numerous awards, including an Obie Award, the Lucille Lortel Award, five Craig Noel Awards (San Diego), the Joseph Jefferson Award (Chicago), the Gregory Award (Seattle) and the Elliot Norton Award (Boston).

With limited seating of 35 per show, this is going to be a ticket to grab early. Be among the first to witness this thrilling interpretation of this important work.
