What the World Needs Now is Empathy by Arthur P. Ciaramicoli, Ed.D., Ph.D. August 1, 2016 - I am a clinical psychologist in private practice and I see a diverse group of clients every week. Most of my clients are not mentally ill but are highly stressed by how they respond to the world we all currently live in. It is inevitable that people raise the question of politics in my individual, family, marital and group therapy sessions. Politicians tell us that we have a binary choice to make, many feel it is between a candidate who lies versus one with an apparent personality disorder. Our future they say is the hands of one of these individuals. I vehemently disagree. Our societal troubles are far deeper than these two individuals. We know that Americans have fewer friends, trust less, while empathy for others has decreased. Let’s bring this political dilemma down to an individual dilemma. Do you lie? Do you blame others when you make a mistake? Do you become overly defensive when questioned if someone is being critical? Do you slander your colleagues, friends, spouses, relatives and most importantly your children if they disagree with you? Do you value achievement more than integrity? Do you value appearance more than character? These are all the questions this election has brought to the forefront. It is not just about electing a leader. It is about YOU being a leader. A leader in ever interaction you have. It is about communicating with tact, honestly and most importantly with empathy. Empathy is a capacity we are born with. It is the ability to understand and respond to the unique experiences of another. It is different than sympathy. Sympathy rushes in to console, it is immediate, reactive, based on our previous experiences. Empathy, in contrast, takes time to gather the facts, no sound bites, only the gathering of truthful facts. No assumptions like “he’s Muslim, she’s Christian, he’s Jewish, she’s an atheist” therefore we know all about them. Empathy is part of our genetic endowment, but if it is not practiced it atrophies like an unused muscle. Our world, with terrorism, bigotry, hatred, and mounting attempts to segregate one kind of individual or one country from another is in critical need of an expansion of empathy. When we open our eyes and expand our view we not only become a change agent, we produce chemicals that make us live longer and happier. Stress produces the opposite; the stress hormone cortisol reduces empathy and creates biased, black and white thinking. We cannot afford, in these crucial times, to continue with pessimism and helplessness. YOU can make a difference, right now, this moment. Don’t wait for politicians to be the leaders of the change, you are the CHANGE, we are theCHANGE. Bottom line-all human beings want two things-to be loved and respected. Take either away or deprive a person of both and conflict results. When we slow down, calm ourselves and truly try to understand each other we find that beyond race, religion, country and culture we all are more alike than we ever realized. Beyond the surface of every human being we find ourselves, and that is our connection to humanity. Human beings, all human beings, possess goodness. Empathy uncovers our true self, lying and slander covers over goodness like a circle of clouds on a dreary day. Our world is not dreary, it is filled with good people but each one of us has to work to uncover the goodness in each other to survive with hope and happiness. Develop your empathic capacity and you will feel alive, free and connected to the world with hope and renewed energy. We need an empathy movement more than a political movement. Arthur P. Ciaramicoli, Ed.D., Ph.D. Author of The Stress Solution: Using Empathy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Reduce Anxiety and Develop Resilience. Two Plead Guilty to Obstruction
BOSTON
– August
1, 2016 - Two auto body shop employees have pleaded guilty to
corrupting witnesses and making bribes for false testimony as part
of a conspiracy to obtain acquittals at a March 2012 criminal trial
involving a scheme to intentionally damage motor vehicles in order
to make insurance claims, Attorney General Maura Healey announced
today.
Fred Battista, age 54, of
Winthrop, pleaded guilty today to charges of Corrupting
a Witness, Suborning Perjury, Obstruction of Justice, andConspiracy. David
Forlizzi, age 56, of Peabody, pleaded guilty last week to charges of Corrupting
a Witness, Suborning Perjury, Obstruction of Justice, and
Conspiracy. Both Forlizzi and Battista will be sentenced at Suffolk
Superior Court in September.
In March 2008, a Suffolk
County Grand Jury returned
indictments against
six individuals, including Fred Battista and David Forlizzi – who
ran Collision Headquarters, Inc., an auto body shop in Winthrop –
for Insurance Fraud, Larceny, and Conspiracy relating to false
automobile insurance property damage claims. The other individuals
charged were Janet Vaccari, Deana Pistone, Laura Battista, and
William Penta. The AG’s investigation focused on an alleged
insurance fraud scheme that involved intentionally damaging
automobiles, falsely reporting that the vehicles had been involved
in accidents, and collecting property damage proceeds from motor
vehicle insurance companies.
The investigation was
conducted in 2007 by the AG’s Office after the matter was referred
by the Massachusetts Insurance Fraud Bureau.
During the investigation, Vaccari, Pistone
and Penta gave recorded statements to investigators that Fred
Battista and Forlizzi arranged the insurance fraud. In November
2008, Vaccari, Pistone, Penta, and Laura Battista pleaded
guilty to
conspiring with Fred Battista and Forlizzi to carry out the fraud.
In March 2008, during the trial of Fred Battista and David Forlizzi,
Vaccari, Penta and Laura Battista gave testimony in direct
contradiction to their prior recorded statements and guilty pleas,
that they had initiated the false insurance claims totally on their
own and without the involvement or knowledge of Fred Battista or
Forlizzi. Pistone, who had given a recorded statement implicating
Forlizzi in the insurance fraud, could not be located for trial.
At the conclusion of the Commonwealth’s evidence Suffolk Superior
Court Judge Regina L. Quinlan entered verdicts of Not Guilty in
favor of Battista and Forlizzi, and referred the matter to the
Attorney General’s Office to investigate for perjury, subornation of
perjury, and obstruction of justice.
The AG’s investigation
uncovered evidence that Forlizzi and Fred Battista had procured
perjured testimony at trial from Vaccari, Laura Battista and Penta,
paid thousands of dollars to Laura Battista to obtain her false
testimony, and paid money to Vaccari to keep Pistone out of state so
she would be unavailable to testify at the trial. Among other
evidence, investigators learned that Forlizzi, Fred Battista,
Vaccari and Laura Battista had met shortly before the trial, to
concoct the false story that Vaccari and Laura Battista would
testify to as to how one of the false auto insurance claims had come
about. Investigators also uncovered a text message that Battista had
sent to Penta during the trial, in which Battista told Penta: “Tell
Laura stick to her story.” In July 2012, Forlizzi, Fred Battista, Vaccari, Pistone, Laura Battista, and Penta were arraigned in Boston Municipal Court, and were charged with perjury, corruption of witnesses and conspiracy. In November, 2012 all six defendants were indicted by a Suffolk County Grand Jury on obstruction of justice, corruption of witnesses, perjury and conspiracy charges. On March 29, 2012 Vacarri, Laura Battista and Penta pleaded guilty to all of the charges pending against them. Their sentencings are scheduled for October 7, 2016. |

WATER BAN EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
Important water supply notice. Due to the elevated drought conditions to severe, a dramatic increase in water use and a rapid decrease in ground and surface water levels, it has become necessary to prohibit ALL lawn watering effective immediately. We continue to receive very little rain to help recharge our aquifers. It is Imperative that everyone turn off all automatic lawn irrigation systems, and stop all forms of lawn watering. This is necessary to ensure a safe and adequate supply for our daily essential needs and for firefighting capabilities. All other non-essential use is still limited to before 9AM and after 5PM. These restrictions only pertain to users of the municipal water system. We need everyone’s strict adherence and cooperation in this important matter to sustain the town water supply through these drought conditions. |

Eons ago, its ancestors likely had different markings around its mouth; but the ones with the chance markings that appear to be gigantic teeth around its facial area are the ones that kept predators away and became part of the specie that makes it distinctive; the ones most likely to survive long enough to live and pass on their genes. |

Water
Supply Diminishing, Consequences Loom
The Town's pumping capacity from its wells is diminishing quickly due to a combination of the continuing drought and a considerable increase in water use. It is now necessary to use water from our Pond Street wells to keep up with water use demand. Those wells contain naturally occurring iron; as such, you may notice discoloration in the water from time to time. That discoloration poses no threat to public health. It is IMPERATIVE that everyone adhere to the current water use restrictions. You can find the details here: Water Use Restrictions. We are quickly approaching the need to enact further restrictions to ensure the safe and adequate supply of water for daily essential needs and fire fighting capability.

A Nest of Thine Own July 26, 2016 - At the last visit to our favorite heron nursery, we spotted a photographer hiding on the shore of the marsh making a nest for herself from which to photograph the dozen or so heron nests within sight. Her lens is likely made especially for photographing birds from afar, given its length. Unlike most cameras that would mount on a tripod, a lens this size would need to have its own mount, so as to not stress the lens receptacle on the camera, which is much lighter than the lens. |

SOLD! July 26 2016 - Old Town Liquors, the license and building, were acquired by Medfield resident Kristofor Lako, who sold his Peabody package store, he said, to work closer to his home. The sale price, listed in the Real Estate Transactions, was $660,000. A family man proud of his two daughters, he was quick to mention that his wife works for Ameriprise Financial. "I'm a hard-working person," he said, and plans to maintain the "nice and clean" presentation of the store. He promised to drop many, if not most , of the prices by the end of September, the beginning of October. "I love to be part of the community of Hopkinton," he said. |

Unwelcoming July 25, 2016 - The commonly held belief that Hopkinton State Park does not charge admission, only for parking, was of no consequence this past Saturday when a shiny new sign made its bright, bold debut, and powerful pronouncement. Of course, anyone thinking they could arrive at the T Station and walk up the partial sidewalk constructed up to the Boyce residence, after dragging their coolers from Dorchester or Mattapan, would have been very disappointed. |

Gunshot Ricochet Wound at Southborough Rod
and Gun
July 25, 2016 - Shortly before 1:00 pm today, Hopkinton Police and Fire responded to a firearms accident resulting in a leg injury of a 33 year-old woman at Southborough Road and Gun Club, which is in Hopkinton on the border with Southborough. The injury was reported as a ricochet injury, with injuries to her leg. First responders reported that the bleeding was stopped. According to Hopkinton Police Public Information Officer Lt. Joseph Bennett, a third party who was not with the woman called in the accident. Lt. Bennett said that the woman left the shooting position and accidentally discharged the 9mm semi-automatic handgun, hitting the concrete pad at her feet. He said if anything, she was struck by concrete, and perhaps bullet fragments from the ricochet. She was not struck by the bullet itself, he said, despite the original caller, who said the bullet was lodged in her leg. She was brought to UMass in Worcester by Hopkinton Ambulance after being treated by first responder, Officer Arthur Schofield, who is an EMT, and then firefighters . |
