Friends of Whitehall Spring Clean-up April 23rd 2016

        The Friends of Whitehall ‘s 12^th spring lake and trail clean-up will be held on Sat. April 23^rd 2016 from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. We will gather at the boat landing at Whitehall State Park on Wood St. (rte.135) and be assigned areas of trails and shoreline around the lake to clean up debris and the refuse from the windy winter.  The trails have been damaged due to the weather and some will need to be cleared. We will also clean up some of the roadsides near the lake. Gloves, trash bags, tools and water will be provided. Coffee and refreshments will be available. We will be working with the Department of Recreation and Conservation that day in conjunction with Earth Week. This is a wonderful opportunity to help your community.

The Friends of Whitehall started in 2005 and our main mission is to preserve, protect and improve the wonderful natural resource of Lake Whitehall and its environs. We are proud of our many accomplishments which are cited on our website www.friendsofwhitehall.org. Each year we send an appeal letter for membership to residents in the immediate vicinity of the lake and its watershed. We would like to expand our membership to all residents of Hopkinton and surrounding towns who enjoy and use Whitehall, whether for boating, fishing or hiking. Membership forms can be downloaded from our website.  We are also on Facebook.

We hope you will help with the clean-up on April 23^rd and that you will consider becoming a member. We are a non-profit 501c (3) organization.

New Musical Revue in Hopkinton Showcases the Songs of Female Writers of the Stage

     (April 19, 2016 - HOPKINTON, MA) — Enter Stage Left Theater (ESL) presents Brought to Light: A Millennium of Women as Storytellers of the Stage, May 12-14, at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts. Written and directed by Mark DiCampo, this spring musical showcases some familiar songs and others that are rarely performed from shows such as Once Upon a Mattress, Little Women, Ragtime, and others. Performances are Thursday though Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Delbridge Family Performance Space at the HCA (98 Hayden Rowe St., Hopkinton, MA). Tickets are $20 general admission and $15 for students and seniors (60+). Student rush tickets will be available the day of performances for $10 at the box office. Purchase tickets at the door or at www.hopartscenter.org.

            “We are very lucky to have such a talented high school cast,” said show director Mark DiCampo. “They are paying tribute to some of the theater world’s most talented song writers, many of whom often go unsung.”

 
Flow Tests Today

Please be advised that multiple, required fire flow test will take place on Tuesday, April 19^th ,  from approximately 10AM to noon.  Because these tests will take place on main transmission lines, customers may notice some discoloration during and after the tests throughout town.  Please avoid doing any laundry, dishwasher loads or other water use activities, during this time. Any discoloration that may occur will eventually dissipate. You may need to run your cold water line to clear your internal pipes once the test is complete.

Hopkinton Marathon Committee to Recognize Four Veterans at Start

HOPKINTON, MA (April 16, 2016)—The Hopkinton Marathon Committee will honor four veterans at the start of the 120^th Boston Marathon on Patriots’ Day, April 20, 2016. Three of the veterans, Ron Clark, Ron Remillard (photo), and Len Robbins, served in the Army in Vietnam, while Naval aviator Ben Palleiko was stationed on the USS Kitty Hawk in the Western Pacific and Persian Gulf. Hopkinton Marathon Committee Selects Three Starters for 120^th Boston Marathon

HOPKINTON, MA (April 13, 2016)—The Hopkinton Marathon Committee (HMC) has selected Billy Mills, Rick Macmillan, and Chuck Wallace as starters for the second, third and fourth waves, respectively, of the 120^th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 28. The Boston Athletic Association has yet to announce the starter for Wave One.

 “To recognize the town of Hopkinton for its role as the start host for the Boston Marathon, the B.A.A. has charged the Hopkinton Marathon Committee with selecting the starters for the later waves of the marathon,” said Dorothy Ferriter-Wallace, chairperson of the HMC. “This year the committee has voted to select two Hopkinton men who have served many roles in the town and for the marathon, as well as a Native American man and veteran who won a gold medal for our country in the 1964 Olympic Games and has played an important role in running nationally. We are thrilled to announce that Billy Mills, Rick Macmillan (photo, right), and Chuck Wallace (photo, left) have accepted the roles of starters for waves two, three and four, respectively.”

Mills, a surprise Olympic gold medalist in the 10,000m in Tokyo in 1964 will be at the marathon as part of a B.A.A. celebration of Native American runners. A member of the Oglala Lakota (Sioux), he will start Wave Two. “It is a privilege to help start the 2016 Boston Marathon, which honors the contributions of Native athletes to our sport,” said the former U.S. Marine. “Throughout my life as a runner, I have seen how our dreams give us the courage and strength to achieve our goals. By honoring American Indian runners, we are showing a new generation of Native youth that their dreams are within their reach. I’m thrilled to be here with a team of runners, including some of our most promising Native running stars, to support Running Strong for American Indian Youth and inspire runners everywhere to chase their dreams.”

Macmillan will start Wave Three. The former Hopkinton fire chief was born and raised in Hopkinton and has been involved with the Boston Marathon in various ways. Currently, he helps with details pertaining to the lead vehicles, and hosts many marathon officials and VIPs at his home on marathon morning. “It’ll be tremendous just to be up at the start since I’m usually so busy at home I don’t get a chance to see it anymore,” he said.

Wallace has worked at 33 Boston Marathon and has seen the police planning work involved go from a few extra hours starting a week before the race to two full-time positions. Instrumental in setting up the marathon’s start security plan, Wallace retired as lieutenant from the Hopkinton Police Department in January, but will remain involved in the marathon. “I still look forward to assisting when and wherever I can,” he said. “Over the years I have been blessed to have met and worked with some of the finest people ever. Hopkinton’s New England Laborers’ Training Center Celebrates 20 Years

of Hosting Marathoners and B.A.A. Technical Team

HOPKINTON, MA (April 16, 2016)—For 20 years the New England Laborers’ Training Center in Hopkinton has hosted runners and others in town for the Boston Marathon. In addition to hosting runners, NELTC has worked on other projects with the Hopkinton Marathon Committee.

“We enjoy being part of the Boston Marathon, we offer a great place to stay for runners who have come from Australia, Canada, Japan, Germany, Russia, Scotland, Paris, London, and all over the United States,” said Jim Merloni, Jr., NELTC’s administrator for almost 50 years.

“It has been a real pleasure working with Jim Merloni and everyone at Laborers’ for the past 20 years,” said Dorothy Ferriter-Wallace (photo), chairperson of the Hopkinton Marathon Committee and coordinator of the housing program. “One of their most generous donations was the bleachers that are used for the Start Line VIP seating. The years have flown by and the partnership between Laborers’ and the Hopkinton Marathon Committee has certainly grown. We will always be grateful for the support, friendship, and the many contributions Laborers’ has made over the years. Congratulations to everyone at Laborers’ Training Center and we look forward to many more years working together on marathon weekend.”

Best known as an off the job training academy for laborers, NELTC’s 140 acre wooded facility in Hopkinton includes dormitories and dining rooms that have accommodated many runners over the past 20 years. Stephen Kilburn, a Canadian who runs the Boston Marathon annually, has stayed at Laborers’ for years. “They seem to make it their mission to top the previous year’s record of hospitality!” he said. “Coming to Laborers’ is like coming to a reunion of extended family and their friends once a year. Many share a common connection with the marathon, though that connection may be that they are runners, timers, or officials, or people in the public service like police who are doing their parts to make the race happen. And after a few years, you find you have a bit of shared history.”

John Magnuson, who will stay at Laborers’ for the 19^th time this year is part of the shared history. He is a member of the B.A.A. Technical Team that travels to the area from around the country. “The NE Laborers’ Center has been vital to MYLAPS Timing Team,” he said. “It provides us a central location to prepare and synchronize our equipment. The role the facility provides has been critical to our success.”

B.A.A. Executive Director Tom Grilk said, “The Boston Marathon holds the nearly unique distinction of being both an internationally renowned event and one that is inextricably bound up with the communities through which the race passes. The race brings runners an intimate, small town sense of being taken care of even as they compete on a world stage. It is organizations like the Laborers’ Training Center that create that feeling, and not only among the runners, but also a great many of those who come to serve the runners.” Contributed content. RED FLAG WARNING POSTED FOR EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS

Situation
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for eastern Massachusetts from 10 AM to 6 PM today due to dry conditions, low relative humidity and gusty winds.

*        Relative humidity will drop into the teens in the afternoon for most of the warning area, with values of 25-40% along the immediate coast.

*        Temperatures will be in the mid-50's to low 60's in the afternoon.

*        Winds will be from the northeast with gusts of 20-30 MPH, and up to 40 MPH across the Cape and Islands

The National Weather Service issues a Red Flag Warning when critical fire conditions are ongoing or expected to occur within the next 24 hours.  Conditions during the Red Flag Warning may result in numerous fire starts or extreme fire behavior in current fires.  Any fires that start may spread rapidly and become difficult to extinguish.

32 Additional Schools Receive Robo-call Bomb Threats Today

April 14, 2016 —As of this writing, we are aware of 32 schools in Massachusetts that have received robo-call bomb threats today. The response to the threats is being handled, variously, by local police and fire departments, the State Police Bomb Squad, State Police patrols and K9 units, and the office of the State Fire Marshal. The threats are being tracked by State Police at the Commonwealth Fusion Center. For each threat, a risk assessment is performed and authorities are responding accordingly. No hazardous devices have been found at any sites as of this time.

Please note that for tactical reasons we will not list all the communities where threats are being received.

The investigation into the spate of school bomb threats is being led by the FBI with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police and the Office of the State Fire Marshal. As previously noted on various dates earlier this year, we believe the robo-call threats are delivered to targeted destinations through an online network or networks via numerous routers.

Cinderella is Coming to Hopkinton Middle School

Do you believe in magic? The Hopkinton Middle School Drama Club is giving a ball, and you are invited! Join us on Friday, April 29, or Saturday, April 30, at 7:00 pm, or on Sunday, May 1, at 2:00 pm, to experience the glamour and intrigue of Roger’s and Hammerstein’s classic musical, Cinderella. Performances will be presented in the Hopkinton Middle School Auditorium, 88 Hayden Rowe St, Hopkinton MA 01748. Tickets can be purchased at the Middle School from 6:00-7:00 pm each day during the week of the performance (around rehearsal pickup) or on-site before the show. Prices are $12 for adults and $10 for students. Receive a $2 discount per ticket for each donation of a NEW, unused educational supply item for the Project Just Because Education Program.

You are further invited to Cinderella’s Tea Party, which will be held on Saturday, April 30, from 2:30-4:00 pm in the Hopkinton Middle School Courtyard Garden. Enjoy tea-cakes and dainties as you are entertained with songs, games, Royal Etiquette lessons, and visits (photo opportunities!) with our Princesses of the Land and even the Queen! We must ask that you bring your own picnic blankets or seating if you wish. You will be greeted at the HMS main entrance and escorted to the Royal Garden.
