on the Social Studies in Sturbridge, MA.

April 4, 2016 — President Tom Birmingham will begin the event in Sturbridge by awarding the winners of Pioneer Institute's third annual Frederick Douglass U.S. History Essay Contest for Massachusetts high school students. The contest encouraged students to choose from dozens of Massachusetts entrepreneurs and inventions and develop a clearly organized, well-researched essay drawing on primary and secondary sources that explained the historical impact and significance of the chosen subject matter.

Pioneer Institute received nearly 70 submissions from public, vocational-technical, charter, parochial, and private school students, as well as students schooled at home. Winners were selected by an independent panel of judges, including current and former high school history teachers. The first place prize is $5,000; second place is $2,000; third place is $1,000; and Honorable Mentions are $500 each. In addition, the first place winner's school will receive $1,000. Judges selected three top prize winners and four honorable mentions.

The first place winner is Avery B. Sherffius (Photo) of Hopkinton High School for his essay on a gene editing tool known as CRISPR, developed in a Cambridge-based lab, which will significantly impact medicine and agriculture. Trails for Tails

Trails for Tails is a new program coming to Greyhound Friends Inc. in mid May! Volunteers who sign up for this program will be given weekly time slots, where they will come to the shelter, be paired with a dog in need of some exercise, and get to take them for a hike or run, on the nearby and beautiful Duck Pond Trails, which are a part of the Hopkinton State Park. This is an all inclusive program, you do not need to be a distance runner to participate, as many of our dogs have not had proper exercise in a long time, and would love to simply go for a short jog or a nice easy walk. By joining this program, you will be improving our dogs quality of life, their social skills and chances for adoption, as well as helping to publicize the shelter. Sign up before May 1st for a t-shirt! Interested? Go to this link and fill out the application: http://www.greyhoundfds.org/Trails-for-Tails.html  !

Planning Board Member Resigns

by Robert Falcione

March 29, 2016 —  Planning Board member Frank Sivo has resigned as of March 15, 2016, citing differences with leaders on informing citizens in matters related to public safety. The full letter to Selectman Chair Ben Palleiko is below.

Several public officials contacted would not discuss the matter, or provide a reference to Mr. Sivo's concerns, nor would he, leading a reasonable person to conclude that the matter at hand was discussed in executive session, or a least in an environment that provides negative consequences for disclosure. The only executive session for the Planning Board this year was on February 22, 2016. On the agenda for that secret meeting were two pieces of land to be conveyed to the town by Legacy Farms. There was no other matter listed for the executive session. However the expansion of the gas facility has for some time been the subject of whispers and rumors, as well as conflicting solutions to safety concerns.

As for Mr. Sivo's seat on the Planning Board, it will not go on this year's ballot, but will be filled by a joint meeting between the Planning Board and the Board of Selectmen for the period leading to the following election.

Mr. Sivo's letter of resignation is below:

Tuesday, March 15, 2016

Ben Palleiko

Chair of Hopkinton Board of Selectmen

Mr. Palleiko,

It is with regret and disappointment that I am writing to you to resign my position as a member of the Planning Board, effective immediately.

I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the citizens of Hopkinton on both the Appropriations Committee and, more recently, the Planning Board.

Unfortunately, over the past few weeks, I have found that I have a very fundamental difference of opinion with elected leaders of Hopkinton with respect to the government’s duty to inform citizens, via open and transparent government, on matters related to public safety.

I wish you and the current/future members of the Hopkinton Board of Selectmen the best of luck in your service to the citizens of the Hopkinton.

Kind regards,

Frank Sivo

Too Large

March 29, 2016 — This truck had difficulty traversing Walcott Street late yesterday morning, pulling some wires down as it exited onto Main Street. Above, an individual is keeping an eye on the tractor's fifth wheel, as it appears the rig its reaching the limits of its design. Two Hopkinton Police officers were on the other side of the trailer, keeping traffic from getting too close. It was able to negotiate its way out.

Robert L. Kilroy Named
Chairman of Milford Regional Medical Center's Board of Trustees

March 29, 2016 — Noted attorney Robert L. Kilroy was unanimously elected to serve as chairman of Milford Regional Medical Center's Board of Trustees by fellow Board members recently. Former Chairman John Burns, president of Black Brook Realty in Hopkinton, will now assume the role Bob held previously as vice-chairman.

As a partner at the law firm of Mirick, O’Connell, DeMallie & Lougee, LLP, where he serves as chairman of the firm’s Labor, Employment and Employee Benefits Group and as a member of the firm's Health Law Group, Bob has successfully litigated cases in federal and state courts throughout New England. He has been named a Massachusetts “Super Lawyer” by Boston Magazine and Law & Politics for the past five years, and had been named a “Rising Star” for the prior three consecutive years. Prior to his career in law, Bob served 10 years active duty as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was awarded four medals for leadership excellence.

Bob's desire to become actively involved in a charitable organization near his home led him to participate in Milford Regional Healthcare Foundation's quarterly Business Breakfasts over a decade ago. Soon after, he joined the Foundation's Mélange Committee, which oversees the premier, annual fundraising gala to support Hospital programs and services. Bob then served on the Foundation's Board, first as vice-chairman and then chairman during one of the Board's most successful capital campaigns, which raised over $25 million towards Milford Regional's recent expansion project.

Bob's primary focus for the Board during his tenure as chairman is a commitment to ensure patient safety and quality care. His dedication to this cause was evident in his involvement with the Patient Care Assessment Committee (PCAC). As chairman of PCAC, Bob was instrumental in sharpening the system-wide focus on patient safety and quality and improving Board oversight for credentialing. His active participation and leadership of PCAC led to an appointment this past year as the only non-clinical member of the Clinical Issues Advisory Council for the Massachusetts Hospital Association.
In addition, Bob also served as a hospital corporator, chairman of the Nominating Committee, chairman of a subcommittee that led the effort to improve the credentialing process and as a member of the Compensation Committee.

"We are very fortunate to have Bob Kilroy serve as chairman of our Board of Trustees," says Milford Regional President and CEO Edward J. Kelly. "He is a gifted leader that will challenge and motivate our institution as we strive to provide excellence in healthcare. Our patients will be the benefactors of his focus on quality care and patient safety. We at Milford Regional are grateful for Bob's willingness to devote so much of his time and talent in service to our Medical Center."

"It is a great honor to be given the opportunity to serve as chairman of the Board and, in so doing, to work with an energetic and dedicated Board, as well as a first-class medical staff, hospital leaders and administrators for whom I have great respect," says Bob Kilroy. "During my affiliation with the Hospital, I have developed a deep admiration for the many front-line employees, nursing staff, physicians, hospital administrators and volunteers of the Hospital and Tri-County Medical Associates who daily provide exceptional patient care with dignity, compassion and respect to our growing and diverse patient population."
Both residents of Upton, Bob Kilroy and his wife, Deb, have two daughters, Shauna and Julia.

Deadline Passes

March 28, 2016 — Today was the deadline that nomination papers were due to be turned into the Town Clerk. Each candidate needed to gather 50 signatures, which will be verified by the Town Clerk before official acceptance. The other way to get  on the ballot is to be voted by a party's caucus. The Dems have held theirs, and we await for an answer from the Republicans. Above, Clifford Kistner, a candidate for Planning Board, turns in his nomination papers this afternoon.

"Self-Esteem: What It Really Is; What Parents Can—and Can’t—Do to Help It"
Monday, March 28 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.
m.

Self-esteem is perhaps the most widely known—and misunderstood—concept in child psychology. It’s seen as essential to children’s happiness and performance. But there is actually no way to give self-esteem to a child, and the experiences that build it contradict what most parents believe. Dr. Rob Evans will clarify self-esteem and its role in students’ lives and offer specific, practical suggestions for helping children gain confidence and competence.

This presentation is part of Fay’s series, "Ideas&Insights at Fay School," which features informative speakers, workshops, and presentations on topics that are relevant to parents today.

The event is free to attend and open to the public. No registration is required to attend and parking will be available at 25 Middle Road in Southborough, MA.
