Suspect In Armed Robbery Of Newton Middle Schooler Arraigned

WOBURN – Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan has announced that Carlos Aguilar-Cruz, 24, of Waltham, was arraigned today in Newton District Court on the charge of armed robbery.

Judge Lynn Brudemuehl ordered the defendant held without bail pending a 58A dangerousness hearing scheduled for Monday, March 28.

On Monday, March 21 at approximately 2:15 p.m. Newton Police were called to a middle school in response to a reported robbery of a 12-year-old male. Authorities were informed that 9:00 a.m. that morning the student had been walking to school behind the defendant who allegedly then slowed down his pace to allow the victim to pass him before drawing a knife, throwing the victim to the ground and grabbing the victim’s phone before fleeing the scene. The victim sustained minor injuries.

On Thursday, March 24, Newton Police received a call at approximately 6:00 p.m. that a member of the public observed a man who appeared to match the description of the defendant at the Waltham Common. Waltham Police then arrested the defendant and transported him to the Newton Police Station.

“The suspect in this case was apprehended thanks to a member of the public who had been paying close attention to the media coverage surrounding this case,” state District Attorney Ryan. “This is an excellent example of the public and law enforcement sharing information to make our communities safer.”

Fugitive Child Rapist Captured in Florida

A joint investigation by Fall River Police, the United States Marshals Service, a Regional Fugitive Task Force based in Orlando, Fla., and the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (VFAS) this morning culminated in the capture of fugitive child rapist JOHN MUNROE.

MUNROE, 75, was located hiding out at a residence in Deland, Fla. He was taken into custody and transported to the Volusia County Jail and charged as a fugitive from justice. A Massachusetts State Police VFAS trooper who had been involved in the Munroe investigation, by coincidence, was vacationing in Florida and drove across the state to assist with the arrest.

MUNROE had been sought by local, state and federal authorities since October 23, when he cut off a court-ordered GPS monitoring bracelet and fled. The previous month, he had been arrested by Fall River Police for the alleged sexual assault in their city of a child under age 10. On Dec. 14, the Massachusetts State Police put MUNROE on its Most Wanted list.

Over the next few months police conducted an exhaustive multi-state investigation. Investigators today developed intelligence that MUNROE was renting an apartment in a home at 1771 West Parkway in Deland, Fla. US Marshals and Volusia County officers from the Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force set up a surveillance on the residence this morning; at approximately 10:45 a.m. he was located and taken into custody.

MUNROE will be rendited to Massachusetts to face charges of rape of a child with force; indecent assault and battery on a child under 14; aggravated rape of a child; enticing a child under age 16; posing or exhibiting a child in a nude or lascivious manner; and possession of child pornography.

Bobbi Gibb Marathon Sculpture Project Announced

March 22, 2016 — Joan Benoit Samuelson and a long list of Boston Marathon champions have united to form the Bobbi Gibb Marathon Sculpture Project. The project’s goal is to raise funds to erect a sculpture of Gibb on the Boston Marathon course. In 1966, Gibb popped out from behind forsythia bushes in Hopkinton to become the first woman to run Boston.

“As the first woman to finish the Boston Marathon, Bobbi Gibb opened up the door for all of us who followed,” notes Samuelson, a two-time Boston champ and winner of the first Olympic Marathon for women in 1984. “Without her courage and determination, we might never have gained the chance.”

The Gibb marathon sculpture will actually be created by Gibb herself. She is an accomplished painter and sculptor who studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in the mid-1960s--at the same time that she began running longer distances. “For 50 years, it has been my dream to sculpt a life-size woman runner to represent all the powerful women who have run Boston since 1966,” says Gibb.

The Bobbi Gibb Marathon Sculpture Project will be coordinated by the 26.2 Foundation, a Hopkinton-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has helped install other marathon statues in and around Hopkinton--all statues of male officials or runners. “We believe it is long past time to recognize the Boston Marathon’s great women runners,” says Tim Kilduff, of the 26.2 Foundation. “The fact that Boston’s first woman runner is also a great sculptor makes this project absolutely unique and appropriate." ~ Contributed content

Massachusetts State Police Statement Regarding Belgium Terror Attacks
March 22, 2016

The Massachusetts State Police, including our personnel assigned to the Commonwealth Fusion Center and the Joint Terrorism Task Force, continue to monitor today’s multiple terror attacks in and around Brussels.

As it is gathered, intelligence about the attacks is being shared among federal, state and local law enforcement partners.

Troopers constantly maintain a high level of situational awareness. Additionally, patrols have been directed to increase presence in areas near transportation centers in the state. As always, a multi-layered security plan is in place at the airports and seaports. While we do not discuss specific tactics and deployments, security operations at those facilities is constantly evolving to address current situational awareness.

At this point we have no intelligence that suggests any nexus between today’s attacks and Massachusetts. We will continue to monitor developments and update the public accordingly.

"Self-Esteem: What It Really Is; What Parents Can—and Can’t—Do to Help It"
Monday, March 28 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.

Self-esteem is perhaps the most widely known—and misunderstood—concept in child psychology. It’s seen as essential to children’s happiness and performance. But there is actually no way to give self-esteem to a child, and the experiences that build it contradict what most parents believe. Dr. Rob Evans will clarify self-esteem and its role in students’ lives and offer specific, practical suggestions for helping children gain confidence and competence.

This presentation is part of Fay’s series, Ideas&Insights at Fay School, which features informative speakers, workshops, and presentations on topics that are relevant to parents today.

The event is free to attend and open to the public. No registration is required to attend and parking will be available at 25 Middle Road in Southborough, MA.
