Selectmen Hear Slaman Superlatives
More than 600-signature petition turned in

February 24, 2016 — Turning in a petition with more than 600 residents' signatures favoring the hiring of Steve Slaman as Hopkinton Fire Chief, Rick Sulfaro, above, said residents were "distraught" over the current situation.

Ramping up  the rhetoric a notch, Hopkinton resident Don Collins, friend of Interim Chief Slaman called the current status a "charade." Mr. Collins is the Assistant Fire Chief of Massport Fire-Rescue at Logan Airport.

Selectmen fielded applicants in their search to replace retire Chief Ken Clark and had narrowed the field to two, former Hopkinton Fire Chief Gary Daugherty and Deputy Chief Steve Slaman. Daugherty withdrew  from consideration, leaving only Steve Slaman, giving the Selectmen with no choice. They did, however, hire him as Chief in three-month renewable terms while they search for more applicants.

Below, 300th Anniversary Committee Chair Jean Bertschmann, Mike Whalen and craftsman John Foster pose by the bench Mr. Foster built to be used as time capsules, one time capsule to be opened in 2065 and another in 2115. They were sealed last evening, but is upside-down while the sealant dries. The bench is expected to have a place in the new library, once it is constructed. The ground-breaking for that project is scheduled for March 11.

Library Director Retiring

Rownak Hussain has advised me she will be retiring from her position as Library Director for the Town of Hopkinton effective March 11, 2016. Rownak will be relocating to spend some quality time with her family.

She joined Hopkinton eleven (11) years ago and has contributed significantly to the quality of library services and resources in Town. Front and center, Rownak has been a tireless advocate for the Library Project and, over the years, has become the face of the library. Not only has Rownak been in tune with the pulse of this community’s needs, she has gracefully balanced those needs while supporting her staff to achieve high standards of customer service.

One of her most significant accomplishments was facilitating the library’s transition from a private to a public entity. While I share with many the fondest of sentiments that Rownak is moving on to the next exciting phase of her personal life, I certainly will miss her genuine passion for the greater good. I wish her the very best in every opportunity this next chapter has in store for her.

Just Like Old

February 21, 2016 — With the successful completion of a recent capital campaign, St. John the Evangelist has begun restoration and painting of the north side aisle and rear of the church. According to Fr. Richard Cannon, pastor of St. John's, pledges from parishioners, amounting to $1,024,000, exceeded expectation. After water damage repair, art work restoration, and overall painting, the interior of the historic church is expected to recapture the vision of its original, uniquely skilled craftsmen.
In addition, extensive repointing and weatherproofing will begin, as weather permits, on the exterior of the church.

Wow! What a Life

    Editor:

After reading the chronicle of the life of Flora Busconi one word immediately came to mind. Wow! What an incredible life she lived. If you were lucky enough to meet her, you knew she spent her life “giving” and helping others. Flo never expected, nor did she want anything in return. I was privileged to meet and speak with Flo when I visited her loving and devoted sister Lori Gentilotti at Christmas and in the summer. Not only were you captivated by her beautiful eyes and sparkling smile, but it was her personality that really lit up the room. Flo had an overpowering, but understated presence about her. She would always bring me up to date with news and achievements concerning her family. Sometimes she would affectionately touch my arm, perhaps to make certain I was giving her my full attention, while she explained with an enormous amount of pride some wonderful happening in the family or in the community.

Flo made the world a better place during her time, and it's very clear we need more people like her. I am saddened that Flo is no longer with us, but it helps to know that her legacy of unselfishness, and lover for her family and community will serve as a model for generations to come.

I would like to send my sincere condolences to her family and friends as this is a difficult loss for everyone.

Hopkinton Drug Files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
Will be business as usual during reorganization

February 19, 2016 — Hopkinton Drug today filed a petition under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Act to reorganize. The filing of the petition in no way changes our relations with our customers, employees and vendors. Hopkinton Drug is proud of its six-decade record of service to the community, and fully intends to continue such service well into the future.

The bankruptcy petition was necessitated as a result of an arbitration award obtained by Caremark, an affiliate of CVS, against Hopkinton. Hopkinton Drug had hoped to negotiate a full payment of the arbitration award over time, but Caremark refused to negotiate with Hopkinton Drug. Under Chapter 11, a company is allowed to proceed with its business operations while reorganizing its debts, and that is exactly what Hopkinton intends to do. We are hopeful of coming out of Chapter 11 in 3-4 months. Once again, in the meantime, Hopkinton  Drug looks forward to fully serving its customers’ health care needs. ~Dennis Katz
