Selectmen Hear Slaman Superlatives More than 600-signature petition turned in 
February 24, 2016 — Turning in a petition with more than 600 residents' signatures favoring the hiring of Steve Slaman as Hopkinton Fire Chief, Rick Sulfaro, above, said residents were "distraught" over the current situation. Ramping up the rhetoric a notch, Hopkinton resident Don Collins, friend of Interim Chief Slaman called the current status a "charade." Mr. Collins is the Assistant Fire Chief of Massport Fire-Rescue at Logan Airport. Selectmen fielded applicants in their search to replace retire Chief Ken Clark and had narrowed the field to two, former Hopkinton Fire Chief Gary Daugherty and Deputy Chief Steve Slaman. Daugherty withdrew from consideration, leaving only Steve Slaman, giving the Selectmen with no choice. They did, however, hire him as Chief in three-month renewable terms while they search for more applicants.

The ground-breaking for that project is scheduled for March 11.

 Library Director Retiring Rownak Hussain has advised me she will be retiring from her position as Library Director for the Town of Hopkinton effective March 11, 2016. Rownak will be relocating to spend some quality time with her family.
She joined Hopkinton eleven (11) years ago and has contributed significantly to the quality of library services and resources in Town. Front and center, Rownak has been a tireless advocate for the Library Project and, over the years, has become the face of the library. Not only has Rownak been in tune with the pulse of this community’s needs, she has gracefully balanced those needs while supporting her staff to achieve high standards of customer service.
One of her most significant accomplishments was facilitating the library’s transition from a private to a public entity. While I share with many the fondest of sentiments that Rownak is moving on to the next exciting phase of her personal life, I certainly will miss her genuine passion for the greater good. Incident Log Sunday, February 21, 2016 6:15 pm Officer Philip Powers spoke with two men claiming to be waiting for a tow truck to pick up a vehicle they had bought on Wood Street. 5:58 pm Officer Panagiotis Hontzeas stopped a motor vehicle on Elm Street and subsequently arrested a 55 year-old male from Hopkinton and charged him with OUI Liquor, 2nd Offense and Marked Lanes Violation. 11:02 am Officer Thomas Griffin spoke with construction workers who were in violation of the town by-law on Davenport Lane. 10:28 am A caller reported several people ice fishing on Lake Whitehall and believed the ice to be unsafe. Officer Stephen Buckley advised that they were experience fishermen and were notified of the dangers. 2:34 am A resident of Linden Street reported that their neighbors truck lights flashed and the horn honked. Two officers responded and advised that the home and truck were secure.
Saturday, February 20, 2016 9:48 pm A caller from West Main Street reported that lug nuts were missing from his vehicle. Two officers responded to speak with him. 9:46 pm Two officers located teenagers in the sanctuary lot on Clinton Street and advised them to leave the property. 9:19 pm A 911 caller reported that a woman dressed in all dark clothes was walking down Cedar Street. Two officers checked the area with a negative find. 6:38 pm Officer Arthur Schofield located teenagers rock climbing on College Street and advised them they can't be there during the night. 1:54 pm A walk-in stated receiving a letter in the mail from the IRS stating that someone had filed a tax return under her name. 3:38 am The Highway Department was notified that the lights at the intersection of West Main Street and Lumber Street were malfunctioning.
Friday, February 19, 2016 9:20 pm Several callers reported hearing the sound of gunshots in the area of Hidden Brick Road. Three officers checked the area with a negative find. 8:56 pm A caller from Clinton Street reported a possible missing person out of Worcester. 7:42 pm Officer Arthur Schofield spoke with individuals who were walking their dog by College Rock and advised them not to walk in the woods. 6:44 pm A Warmstone Way resident reported that a neighbor's garage door was open. Officer Arthur Schofield advised that everything checked out okay and he was able to secure the garage. 1:08 pm A caller from Hillcrest Drive reported that a vehicle was in the area with a teenager riding on the roof. Officer Philip Powers checked the area but was unable to locate the vehicle. 10:07 am A caller reported that a vehicle was speeding in a school zone on East Main Street. |

Champions! February 22, 2016 — Your Hopkinton Middle School RoboHillers Robotics Team # 1715A recently was crowned the MA VEX IQ Robotics Champions. The team made some calculated decisions just prior to competing. By the end of the day the team had finished ranked number 1 with a high total score of 253 points, scoring 22 points higher than the second place team. All 27 teams at the event participated in judged events throughout the day that involved teleoperated control, autonomous programming, a STEM Research presentation, and team interview. The top ten teams from the day competed in a final round and again the RoboHillers came out on top with their partner from BU Academy and were crowned State Champs. The team also won the coveted Excellence Award which is given to the team with the highest combined scoring from all events throughout the day. The RoboHillers have qualified to compete in the VEX IQ World Championships with teams from all over the globe in Kentucky this April. Congrats to team RoboHillers. ~ Contributed content. |

All States Isabelle Giordano, Taylor Velazquez, Emily Mastroianni, and Caitlyn Halloran ran at All-States Saturday and qualified for the 4x400 at Nationals by .01 of a second with a time of 4:04.79. These girls had already qualified for a Sprint Medley. They will run both races at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in NYC in early March. Just Like Old February 21, 2016 — With the successful
completion of a recent capital campaign, St. John the Evangelist
has begun restoration and painting of the north side aisle and
rear of the church. According to Fr. Richard Cannon, pastor of
St. John's, pledges from parishioners, amounting to $1,024,000,
exceeded expectation. After water damage repair, art work
restoration, and overall painting, the interior of the historic
church is expected to recapture the vision of its original,
uniquely skilled craftsmen. |

Retiring After 32 years of Firefighting

February 20, 2016 — The Hopkinton Fire Department would like to send out a special thanks to Firefighter William Lukey as he serves his final tour of duty for the Town today. Bill joined the department back in 1983 as a call/volunteer firefighter and then in 1989 committed himself to a career of public service. We are all lucky to have worked alongside of bill through the years as shared his wonderful humor, wisdom and firefighting experience. So after more than 32 years of service and commitment to our Town we say farewell to Bill and wish him the best in his retirement years. |

Incident Log Thursday, February 18, 2016 10:47 am A resident of Greystone Lane reported that her daughter, who was home alone, stated that a suspicious motor vehicle stopped in front of the house, drove up and down the street several times and was just hanging around the area. Officer John Corridan checked the area but was unable to locate the vehicle. 9:02 am A caller reported that a truck and trailer was parked the wrong way blocking the entrance to the town hall. Officer John Corridan responded and advised that a crew was working on the roof but the entrance was open and clear. 8:55 am A caller reported that the B Street sign and stop sign were taken down, possibly from a large truck. The Highway Department was notified.
Wednesday, February 17, 2016 1:15 pm A 911 caller from West Main Street reported that a vehicle on a car carrier was on fire. Three officers responded and advised that it was just a smoking transmission from a totaled car. 12:58 pm Officer Thomas Griffin assisted a walk-in with fingerprinting for an international background check. 12:45 pm A walk-in spoke with Officer Thomas Griffin regarding tax fraud. 12:04 pm A resident of West Elm Street reported an on-going neighbor/animal problem involving a no trespass order. 10:44 am The Water Department reported finding a license plate in the lake off of Lakeshore Drive. 6:19 am A Spring Street resident reported hearing someone knock on his window awhile ago then drive off in a pickup truck. |

Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
Will be business as usual during reorganization 
The bankruptcy petition was necessitated as a result of an arbitration award obtained by Caremark, an affiliate of CVS, against Hopkinton. Hopkinton Drug had hoped to negotiate a full payment of the arbitration award over time, but Caremark refused to negotiate with Hopkinton Drug. Under Chapter 11, a company is allowed to proceed with its business operations while reorganizing its debts, and that is exactly what Hopkinton intends to do. We are hopeful of coming out of Chapter 11 in 3-4 months. Once again, in the meantime, Hopkinton Drug looks forward to fully serving its customers’ health care needs. ~Dennis Katz |

Claude Henderson Midgette passed away at the age of 73 on February 12, 2016. Claude was born in 1942 in Manns Harbor, NC and is predeceased by his father, Claude Gaither Midgette who died in 1948, his mother, Lucy Bratton Midgette Gibbs who died in 2005 and his stepfather, William F. Gibbs who passed in 1980.

Walter Robbins of Hopkinton passed away Tuesday, February 16,2016 surrounded by his loving family at Beaumont Rehabilitation Center in Westborough. He was the son of the late Walter and Grace (Spinney) Robbins. For over 67 years he was the loving and devoted husband of Claire L. Robbins who passed away in April of 2015.

Open Mic Begins at HCA on March 4
(February 17, 2016 - HOPKINTON, MA) — The
Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA) announces a new monthly series,
First Friday Open Mic, hosted by
Barbara Kessler is a former national touring
singer-songwriter with five CDs, numerous awards and hundreds of
song credits on TV and Film. She co-wrote, performed, and produced
the end credit theme song “Dreaming My Way Home” for the SONY
Playstation game Rogue Galaxy and her songs are featured on such
shows The Voice, All My Children, NCIS, Jag, and One Life
to Live among many others. In addition to coaching up and coming
artists of all ages, Kessler also produces and records demos and
EP’s for other singer-songwriters and bands. Her latest album, What
you Keep, was self produced and features ten new songs. Boston native Jere Shea is a classically trained actor, who has starred on Broadway in “Guys and Dolls,” “Damn Yankees” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Passion” (Theater World Award, Tony Award Nomination, Drama Desk Nomination). He also has several film and TV credits, including a role in the Boston based feature film “Southie” (1998). An accomplished singer, songwriter, and guitarist, he performs in venues across New England. Shea can be heard on the Grammy Award winning Original Broadway Cast Recording of “Passion.” |

PATRICK’S PARTY Senior Center Friday, March 18 at 12 noon It’s time for “the wearing of the green” and a traditional St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The menu will feature a boiled dinner with corned beef or baked ham, cabbage, potato, carrots and Irish soda bread. Entertainment will begin at 12:30 with Roger Tincknell and his program entitled “Ireland to America," a program of lovely ballads and lively sing-alongs played on traditional Irish instruments. Reservations (including those on the lunch list) must be made by Tuesday, March 15. The cost is $10.00 Entertainment is sponsored in part by a grant from the Hopkinton Cultural Council, a local agency, which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Born
in Boston, he was the son of the late Domenico and Carmella (Raciti)
Silvestro. He attended Roxbury Memorial High School for Boys in the
1950s and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He worked as a truck driver
for a variety of Boston-area companies and drove school buses for
Framingham Public Schools.

Family Advisory Council (PFAC). Now in its sixth year of operation,
the PFAC is dedicated to promoting a partnership between the
patients, families, and working professionals affiliated with the
Medical Center to promote and foster patient-centered care.

from 7 to 10 p.m., and will feature Tony-nominated actor Jere Shea.
Singers, players, songwriters, poets, storytellers of all ages, and
the general public are invited to attend. Sign-ups for performers
begin at 7 p.m., with music starting at 7:30 p.m. A $5 suggested
donation is welcome at the door. The event is free for HCA members.
Open mics will take place on the second floor of the newly renovated
