Board of Appeals Overturns Zoning Officer
The Learning Center Allowed birthday parties

October 28, 2015 - Acting on a tip from a competitor who read (on HopNews) about The Learning Center of Hopkinton hosting birthday parties, plus erroneous copy on the TLC website listing engagement parties as one of the allowed uses of "Party Central," led to a cease and desist order by Zoning Enforcement Officer Charles Kadlik to the educational day care center.

       TLC owner Trish Miller, represented by Attorney Suzette A. Ferreira, appealed the order to the Board of Appeals. A Public Hearing was opened last week and continued this this evening. The Board had asked Ms. Miller to devise a business plan and propose conditions and hours of operation of her party place. She did that this evening. She explained that the users of Party Central are largely already students, but the center would like friends of the students to be able to celebrate their parties, too.  The 5-15 students would only party on weekends, and would be overseen by 2-3 adults, who double as weekday workers at the center.

         The Board, led by Acting Chair Michael Peirce, voted 4-0-1 to overturn the decision of the Zoning Enforcement Officer and withdraw the cease and desist order.

Uxbridge Man Arrested for Fake Bomb Threat at Logan

October 28, 2015 - This evening, State Police arrested an Uxbridge man for making a false bomb threat on a United Airlines flight which was scheduled to depart from Logan Airport.

At about 6:50 p.m., State Police boarded United Airlines flight #439 following a report that a man had made a statement in the presence of other passengers, indicating he had a bomb in his bag. Following an investigation of the incident, troopers arrested DENNIS CAMPBELL, 55, of Uxbridge for making a false bomb threat. The flight was delayed for about 50 minutes.

CAMPBELL was booked at the State Police Barracks at Logan Airport and held on $250.00 bail. He will be arraigned in East Boston District Court tomorrow.

Hopkinton Treasurer/Collector Retiring

 

 October 28, 2015 — After 27 years as the Treasurer/Collector for Hopkinton, Maureen Dwinnell, who doubled as Selectman for 6 of those years, is retiring. During her stint as Selectman, she served 5 of those years as the Chair.

 

 Her time in government also included being a state-elected member of the Metropolitan Planning Organization, co-chair of the Central Mass Transportation Authority and on the Board of Directors of the 495 Corridor Planning.

 

Mrs. Dwinnel and husband "Red" sold their home and 19 acre farm on College Street several years ago to purchase a larger piece of property in Upton. Mr. Dwinnel continues to cut and bale hay for area farms.

 

She said she will be working part time to assist her daughter in her business, Liv Salon at 77 West Main Street in Hopkinton, doing financial work.

 

Her last day on the job will be December 31, 2015.

8:43 pm A resident of Nazneen Circle reported that an unknown male with tools was wanting to gain access to his home but was denied. Officer Peter Booth spoke with the individual who stated that he had the wrong house.

6:16 pm A 911 caller reported a traffic backup with people outside of their vehicles on West Main Street. Officer Arthur Schofield responded and advised that it was related to a prior disabled motor vehicle.

8:53 am Officer Matthew McNeil spoke with an individual who reported losing their FID card.

8:49 am Officer Philip Powers responded to Elm Street to check the area for a suspicious person.

8:36 am A walk-in reported being the victim of a scam.

7:39 pm Officer Peter Booth spoke with a caller from Fruit Street who reported that a motor vehicle had been driving aggressively through town.

3:14 pm An off duty police officer reported that a person was swinging nun-chucks in a Main Street business's parking lot. Three officers responded and advised the individual of the illegality of nun-chucks which were then confiscated. A small amount of marijuana was also destroyed at the scene.

11:59 am Officer Matthew McNeil advised that a construction trailer was blocking the roadway on Lumber Street. Officer Aaron O'Neil responded and stated that they were out of the roadway.

Revere Pedestrian Death Under  Investigation

 

October 28, 2015 — The Massachusetts State Police continue to investigate the death of a Revere man, who passed away after he was struck by a car as he walked across Revere Beach Boulevard in a marked crosswalk last weekend.

 

Allen Flynn, 86, died at Massachusetts General Hospital, to where he had been transported after being struck at approximately 10 a.m. Saturday, October 24.

Preliminary investigation by Troop A of the State Police and the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section indicates that Mr. Flynn was walking in the crosswalk in an easterly direction, away from the area of Bianchi’s Pizza and toward the beach wall, when he was struck by a 2003 Honda Civic operated by a 21-year-old East Boston man. Preliminary investigation indicates the Honda’s driver made a hard brake application immediately prior to the impact.

 

Mr. Flynn was transported by ambulance with serious injuries and later died at the hospital. State Police secured the Honda for further examination of the vehicle. Evidence at the scene was documented by State Police Crime Scene Services and collision reconstruction troopers.

 

The cause of the crash remains under investigation to determine if criminal charges are warranted against the driver. No further information is being released at this time.

October 27, 2015 — Above is a chart shown at Town Meeting during the elementary school presentation. Although the new school is represented by the grey bars, the cost is conspicuously absent from the dialogue to the right of the graph, while the cost of the DPW and the Library are listed. During the meeting, the school was stated to cost the town $29.2 million of the $43.2 million total, the difference of the $14 million coming from the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

         According to the chart above, in 2019, the debt payments by the town will be double of this year's amount.

        Although the new elementary school passed by a nearly unanimous vote at Special Town Meeting, it will need a simple majority of voters at the  Special Town Election Monday, November 9, 2015 for final approval.

Italia “Edith” Christine Marie Luciano, 85

 

Italia “Edith” Christine Marie Luciano, 85, entered into eternal life peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, October 26, 2015. Born June 19, 1930 in Amsterdam, New York, she was the daughter of the late Josephine Mancini Verderese and Joseph Mancini and her step-father Pasquale Verderese. She was the wife of Charles Luciano of Hopkinton.


Edith was blessed with twenty grandchildren, twenty-five great children and three great-great children and many nieces and nephews. “Our Mom was always loving, caring and giving to all who entered her home. She lived for others and gave them her Mother's heart. The influence on her children is beyond calculation for she molded our lives that we will carry with us for the rest of our days.”

 


Besides her husband, she leaves behind a brother, Americo “Corky” Mancini and her six children, Jo-Ann (Luciano) Halvey and her husband Michael Halvey of Cary, NC, Linda Luciano Nixon of Kennesaw, GA, Jerome Luciano and his wife Joanne Luciano of Martinsburg, WV, Charles Luciano and his wife Nancy Luciano of Paducah, KY, Lisa (Luciano), Manion-Begnoche and her husband Keith Begnoche of Johnston, RI, and Rose Luciano of Milford. She is predeceased in death by her brothers Orazio, 
Frank, Fred and sister Philomena. She also had three step brothers Joseph, Angelo and Nicholas Verderese.

 


Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 29th from 4-8p.m. at the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton, 57 Hayden Rowe St.  A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30a.m. on Friday, October 30th at St. John the Evangelist Church in Hopkinton. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Family wishes to extend their gratitude to Beacon Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beacon Hospice, 36 William St, Leominster, MA 01453 or to the American Diabetes Association.

Fruit Street Structure Approved
"We did not expect this to become a regional sports facility" Claire Wright

October 27, 2015 — An estimated 515 voters signed up for Special Town Meeting last night at the High School Athletic Center, a group that could have comfortably fit into the Middle School Auditorium, the usual venue for the meeting. Town leaders chose the site in the event of a larger turnout for the school vote. The vote for the school had only one voice in dissent.

        Over 900 voters showed up for the March, 2011 Special Town Meeting that defeated that request for funding a new school at Fruit Street. The vote in favor at that meeting was coincidentally 517, short of the 2/3 majority needed to pass, and nearly the exact number of supporters at last evening's meeting

     Voters, however, spent more time discussing, and had more opposition to, the $500,000, 50'x75' indoor rec facility proposed by the Hopkinton Parks and Recreation Commission that had been recommended for "no action" by the Appropriations Committee.

       An amendment to change the funding method to take the funds from free cash — $5.2 million was just certified as available by the DOR yesterday prior to the meeting — was defeated.

      "We just spent $3 million at this meeting," said Appropriations Chair Michael Manning.

      "This is not a windfall. If we don't have this [in the Spring], we'll have to borrow," he said. The "free cash" was certified for last and this fiscal year. There will be no more certified before the May 2016 Town Meeting. 

       Parks and Recreation Commission Chair Robert Dobinski said that fees would eventually pay for the cost and upkeep of the facility, although he did not have any figures for the cost of running it.

       One person complained that the current Fruit Street Fields are used by people from out of state.

       "People did not expect this [Fruit Street Fields] to become a regional sports facility," said Claire Wright [Photo]. "People have mentioned a gymnasium for Center School."

        Despite vocal opposition and a thumbs down from Appropriations Committee, Mr. Dobinski cited several sports that would use the facility and moved to approve the $500,000.

         The motion passed 154-67, indicating that more than half of the voters had already left. 

        Voters will need to go to the polls to approve this appropriation, as well as the new school, on November 9, 2015.

        These are the questions as we understand them:

 

“Shall the Town of Hopkinton be allowed to exempt from the provisions of Proposition two-and-one-half, so called, the amounts required to pay for the bonds issued in order to construct a new Early Elementary School and related site development on Town-owned property located at 135 Hayden Rowe Street in Hopkinton to replace the existing Center Elementary School?”

 

“Shall the Town of Hopkinton be allowed to exempt from the provisions of Proposition two and one-half, so-called, the amounts required to pay for the bond issued in order to fund engineering designs and construction services related to the construction of an indoor recreational facility or athletic center at the Fruit Street Athletic Fields?”

October 27, 2015 —  In 2011, Hopkinton voters rejected the proposal at that March Special Town Meeting for a new districted elementary school on Fruit Street, largely blaming the lack of openness in the process. A four-year passage of time, as well as a subsequent transparent process of study and engagement, brought a nearly unanimous — but for  one "no" — vote in favor of a new elementary school to replace Center School Monday evening.

        The school, said to be constructed using state of the art in building materials, as well as energy efficient, will be built on former Irvine property on Hayden Rowe Street, and adjacent to EMC Park.

         Elementary School Building Committee member Michael Shepard asked Town Meeting members if they knew where the wood was stacked for sale on Hayden Rowe Street.

        "That's where the entrance is going to be," he said.

        Mr. Shepard explained that the new school entrance will have two lanes in and one out in the morning, and just the opposite in the afternoon. There will be a traffic light.

       Mr. Shepard used words like stimulating, safe, secure, vibrant, comfortable in all seasons, and cost efficient. Each classroom will have a rest room. The construction will be of lasting and latest materials. Mr. Shepard answered those who might have wished Center School would have been renovated instead.

      "Center School is my favorite building in town," he said. He said the people who oversaw that project 85 years ago did a great job.

       "I hope they'll be saying the same thing about this in 85 years," he said.

      The new school will cost $43.2 million, with $14 million reimbursed by the MSBA, and $29.2 million for the town's tab. The average taxpayer will feel a $450 increase in taxes the first year, which will be due after the project is complete.

       Resident Sandy Sulfaro echoed the enthusiasm of several voters before her,  but asked the youngest voters to appreciate what the increase does to senior citizens. She asked that they consider a Mass Property Tax Relief from Major Capital Projects.

       Voters will go to the polls in two weeks to vote again at the ballot box.

11:28 pm A resident of Rosewood Lane reported that a suspicious pickup truck was parked next to her condo. Two officers responded and advised that nothing appears to be suspicious.

8:36 pm A caller reported that a male and female were passed out in a pickup truck parked on West Main Street and she was unable to wake them by knocking on the window. Two officers responded and subsequently placed both parties into Protective Custody.

4:28 pm Multiple callers reported that there were two cows loose near the Post Office on Wood Street. Two officers responded but were unable to locate them.

3:08 pm A walk-in from Spring Street reported finding a cell phone.

1:42 pm A West Main Street resident reported that he believed a water pipe had broke in front of his house as his yard was filling up with water. The Water Department was notified.

1:08 pm A resident of Walcott Valley Drive reported that she found her slider door broken. Officer Philip Powers responded and advised that the damage was caused by a lawn mower.

1:30 am Two officers responded to Briarcliff Drive to assist the Lexington Police Department with an investigation.

1:21 am Officer Jacob Campbell assisted the Ashland Police Department with landing zone coverage on Summer Street.

12:10 am The Upton Police Department reported that a male, who was involved in a motor vehicle accident, left the scene and was possibly walking toward Hopkinton on West Main Street. Officer Peter Booth responded and stated that the individual was located by Upton Police Department.

8:03 pm Officer Panagiotis Hontzeas removed skateboarders from an area on Hayden Rowe Street.

7:20 pm A walk-in reported finding a wallet. The wallet was returned to its owner.

6:20 pm A caller from Downey Street reported that a large group of teenage boys were pretending its Halloween, ringing doorbells and making comments to the home owners. Two officers responded and advised them to leave the area for the night.

6:06 pm Officer David Shane assisted the Lexington Police Department with an investigation on Briarcliff Drive.

5:19 pm A School Street resident reported a suspicious incident of strange people coming to his door and knowing his name. Officer Peter Booth checked the area for the vehicle with a negative find.

4:56 pm A caller reported a suspicious motor vehicle on Wilson Street. Two officers responded and spoke with the operator.

9:41 am A caller reported seeing and speaking with a young female on Fruit Street who appeared to be very ill. Two officers checked the area with a negative find.

7:02 am A caller reported that a vehicle was blocking construction work on Hayden Rowe Street. The owner of the vehicle was contacted and removed it.

11:28 pm A resident of Saddle Hill Road reported waking up to the sound of fireworks going off in her driveway. Two officers checked the area with a negative find.

10:27 pm A 911 caller reported that a motor vehicle was full of youths smoking something and then took off when spotted at a high rate of speed on Hazel Road. Two officers responded but could not locate the vehicle.

6:57 pm Officer John Moran issued handicapped parking violations to two motor vehicles on West Main Street.

4:22 pm A 911 caller from Cedar Street reported that she may have lost her bag. Officer John Moran assisted with retrieving it.

4:20 pm A walk-in from School Street spoke with Officer Arthur Schofield regarding a suspicious incident of possible fraud and packages dropped of at their residence.

3:58 pm Officer Panagiotis Hontzeas stopped a motor vehicle on Main Street and subsequently arrested a 40 year-old male from Hopkinton for a Warrant and also charged him with Uninsured Motor Vehicle/Trailer, Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle and Operating a Motor Vehicle With Registration Suspended, Subsequent Offense.

First, a person who, in good faith, seeks medical assistance for someone experiencing a drug-related overdose shall not be charged or prosecuted for possession of a controlled substance if the evidence for the charge of possession of a controlled substance was gained as a result of the seeking assistance.


Second, a person who experiences a drug-related overdose and is in need of medical assistance and, in good faith, seeks medical assistance, or is the subject of such a good faith request for medical assistance, shall not be charged or prosecuted for possession of a controlled substance if the evidence for the charge of possession of a controlled substance was gained as a result of the overdose and the need for medical assistance.


Third, the act of seeking medical assistance for someone who is experiencing a drug-related overdose may be used as a mitigating factor in a criminal prosecution under the Controlled Substance Act.


Fourth, nothing contained in this section shall prevent anyone from being charged with trafficking, distribution or possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute.


Lastly, a person acting in good faith may receive a Naloxone prescription (Narcan), possess Naloxone and administer Naloxone to an individual appearing to be experiencing an opiate-related overdose.

CORRECTION: One Fatality, One on Life Support on Route 20 Head-on in Oxford

 

Please note: the initial release on this crash indicated two confirmed fatalities. At this time, there is one confirmed fatality and a second victim is on life support. The corrected version is below along with an update on the status of the scene.

Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Sturbridge are currently investigating a multiple-vehicle crash on Route 20 in the town of Oxford that occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. The crash has resulted in a fatality and life-threatening injuries to another victim.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a cement truck and another vehicle crashed head-on. Due to the impact of the crash, the vehicle was pushed into a third vehicle. At this time, troopers are still investigating the directions of travel of the cement truck and the two vehicles at the time of the crash.

One occupant in the car that was involved in the crash with the truck was determined to be deceased at the scene. A second victim suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and remains alive on life support at UMass Medical Center. A third victim in that car was also transported to UMass Medical Center and is undergoing emergency treatment for serious injuries. Their identities, genders, and ages are not being released at this time.

The operator of the truck was injured and transported to an area hospital. Two occupants in the third vehicle were injured and transported to an area hospital.

The make and model of the involved vehicles are not being released at this time.

As of 2 p.m., two vehicles had been removed from the scene. The cement truck, which rolled onto its side, is being righted. Cleanup of spilled cement is ongoing. Route 20 will be closed in both directions for an extended period of time. Traffic is being diverted through Oxbow Rd and Richardson Corner.

Troopers are being assisted at the scene by Oxford and Charlton Fire/EMS as well as the State Police Crime Scene Services Section (CSSS) and Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team (CARS).

October 25, 2015 — The Hiller Football team clinched a spot in the MIAA playoffs with a 28-0 shut out win at .Medfield  on Friday night.  Jake Kelleher through a bomb to Jack Vaccari to start the Hillers scoring on the second pay of the game.  Sam Lehman scored on runs from 10 and 20 yards out and added 87 yards rushing. while the Hiller defense overwhelmed host Medfield. Hopkinton will open the playoffs by traveling to Duxbury in first round action next Friday.

UPDATE: Owner, Pilot of Worcester Plane Crash Identified

 

October 24, 2015 — The Massachusetts State Police and the Massachusetts Port Authority said tonight that the scene of this morning's fatal single-engine plane crash near Worcester Airport will be secured overnight and the investigation into the cause will continue tomorrow.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are expected at the scene tomorrow to join the probe into the crash currently being conducted by State Police, Massport, the Massachusetts Aeronautics Agency and the Worcester County District Attorney.

Massachusetts State Troopers will guard the crash site throughout the night. The site is a wooded area adjacent to airport property near Coppage Road in Worcester.

At approximately 0756 hours State Police were notified that a small plane had crashed shortly after takeoff. First responders attempted to provide life-saving aid to the pilot, Gary Weller, 66, of Putnam, Conn., but he was pronounced deceased after transport to UMass Medical Center in Worcester. The plane, which was heavily damaged, was a Mooney M20M bearing tail registration N243CW.

The debris field was processed by the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.

October 24, 2015 — Supporters of Hopkinton's proposed new elementary school to replace Center School stood out at the town's most travelled intersection Saturday morning to garner support for their position. Unlike the last time this question was put before the voters, there was no one there expressing a view in opposition to the new school, which is planned for the former Irvine parcel off of Hayden Rowe Street. Special Town Meeting is Monday at the High School Athletic Center, and the Special Town Election will be two weeks from that.

Small Plane Crash at Worcester Airport - Pilot Dead

NOTE: News reports have designated the woods  off of Coppage Drive in Worcester as the site of the crash, noted above by the red marker. For reference, the object of a HopNews story or two, Quaker Cemetery, commonly referred to as Spider Gate Cemetery, is noted to the left of the screen image.

 

The Massachusetts State Police and the Worcester District Attorney's Office, along with Massport and federal agencies, are investigating the crash of a single engine plane at Worcester Airport that resulted in a fatality this morning. 

At approximately 0800 hrs Troop F of the State Police was notified that the plane had gone off the runway upon takeoff and crashed into a wooded area. The pilot, a male, has been determined to be deceased at the scene. 


The deceased victim was the plane's only occupant. His identify and hometown, as well as the type of plane he was piloting, are not being released pending notification of next of kin. 


The cause of the crash remains under investigation. State Police Crime Scene Services technicians are processing the scene. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Worcester District Attorney's office are enroute to the scene.

5:50 pm Officer John Moran issued a parking citation to a motor vehicle parked in a handicapped spot on Woodview Way.

5:15 pm Officer John Moran issued a handicapped parking violation to a motor vehicle on West Main Street.

4:32 pm A caller from Proctor Street reported a suspicious incident. Two officers spoke with an individual who's story did not add up and advised that they would investigate further.

1:12 am A motorist reported that an erratic operator was slowing down, speeding up and going off of the roadway on Main Street. Officer John Corridan responded and spoke with the driver.

8:47 pm A 911 caller from Wood Street reported possible gunshots in the area. Two officers responded but did not hear anything suspicious.

8:34 pm A caller reported possible fireworks in the area of Hayward Street. Two officers checked the area with a negative find.

8:31 pm A resident of Bull Moose Run reported that a suspicious SUV was in front of their house. Officer Peter Booth responded but could not locate the vehicle.

4:00 pm Officer John Moran issued a parking ticket to a motor vehicle on Hayden Rowe Street.

10:52 am A walk-in spoke with Officer Matthew McNeil regarding an attempted breaking and entering.

10:25 am A Crispwater Way resident reported a possible stolen package that was suppose to be delivered on Monday but hasn't arrived yet.

8:07 am A walk-in from Frankland Road reported that there were two vehicles in her driveway and she did not know who they belonged to. Officer Matthew McNeil responded and advised that they belonged to detail officers in the area.

October 22, 2015 — The property owner of 34 Main Street offered his under-development parking lot on Walcott Street to people who wanted to shop at the drugstore or elsewhere in the Downtown; but all that has changed in just a few days as there is now a  fence around it, signs warning people away, and a cellar hole about to be dug prior to the construction of a beautiful new building designed by Hopkinton firm Gorman-Richardson-Lewis Architects. Below, a long truck took a solid 5 minutes to back into Walcott Street from Main Street to deliver forms. Short  term, do not expect to find parking on Walcott Street for a while.

Road Rage Call Leads To Gun Arrests In Mansfield

    On 10/21/2015 at 4 p.m., Trooper Michael Tryon, assigned to the State Police Barracks in Foxboro, was notified of a road rage incident that occurred on Route 95 southbound in Sharon. A motorist called 911 stating a gun had been pointed at him by a man in a Volkswagen. The caller gave the license plate of the vehicle and described the two male occupants. Trooper Tryon observed the vehicle traveling on Route 95 southbound in Mansfield and stopped it. The operator of the Volkswagen, 21-year-old YOMAR ROMERO of Pawtucket RI, was arrested for a default warrant out of Uxbridge District Court. The passenger, 20-year-old JUSTIN SMITH of Providence RI, had a .32 caliber shell casing in his pocket. Inside the vehicle, a loaded .32 caliber Colt handgun was located, along with a box containing 28 rounds of ammunition and a Halloween mask. Neither man had a valid license to carry a firearm and both were arrested and transported to the State Police Barracks in Foxboro where they were booked and are being held on $10,000 bail each.

ROMERO was charged with the following offenses:
1. Possession of a Firearm Without an FID Card2. Possession of Ammunition Without an FID Card
3. Carrying a Firearm Without a License
4. Default Warrant

SMITH was charged with the following offenses:
1. Carrying a Firearm Without a License
2. Assault With A Dangerous Weapon
3. Possession of Ammunition Without an FID Card

Both men will be arraigned in Attleboro District Court in the morning.

Kevin M Horton 66

 

Kevin M Horton 66, Massachusetts State Police Detective Lieutenant, Retired, of Hopkinton and formerly of Natick, died Tuesday October 20, 2015 at the Metro West Medical Center in Framingham.

He was the beloved husband of Ann K (Rempelakis) Horton. A Hopkinton resident for 36 years he was the son of Eva M (McLeod) Horton Garons of Framingham and the late Daniel F Horton Sr.

 

Detective Lieutenant Kevin M. Horton, referred to by many as the “Godfather of Fugitive Investigations”, began his career with the Massachusetts State Police in 1978. He served 4.5 years with the Worcester Detective Unit - Narcotics / Investigations; 2.25 years with Narcotics Inspection; 13 years with Special Services Section- Violent Fugitive Arrest Squad (Graphic, right); and 8 years with the then-newly formed Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section.

During his tenure with VFAS, more than 24,840 Violent Felons were apprehended under his command.

With a vision to unite Fugitive Investigators from around the country, DLT Horton Co-Founded the National Association of Fugitive Investigators (NAFI) in 1991.

An outstanding football and hockey athlete for Natick High School, he maintained an appreciation for the life lessons that his coaches instilled in him. In 2007, Kevin was inducted into the Natick High School Wall of Achievement.
 
DLT Horton received his Master’s Degree from Anna Maria College, B.S and B.A degree from Boston College class of 1972, attended TrinityPawling Prep in New York, and graduated from Natick High School class of 1967.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter Kali A. Horton of Hopkinton, one granddaughter Aaleyah Horton of Hopkinton, his brothers and sisters Eileen Horton Dugan and her husband John of San Antonio TX, Kathleen Horton of Burlington, Daniel Horton and his wife Kim of Natick, Michael Horton and his wife Tara of Holden, mother-in-law Mary Rempelakis of Framingham, brother-in-law Marc Rempelakisand his wife Caren of Plympton, sister-in-law Lee Ann Rempelakis of Marlborough, and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the father of the late Rory Horton, and brother-in-law of the late Thomas Rempelakis.

Relatives and friends are invited to join the funeral procession on Tuesday, October 27 at 8:30 A.M. from the John Everett and Sons Funeral Home, 4 Park Street, at Natick Common, followed by a Catholic Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 20 Church Street, Hopkinton at 10:00 A.M.

Visiting hours are Monday, October 26 from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M.

11:22 pm The Upton Police Department reported an erratic operator heading into Hopkinton. Officer Peter Booth stopped the vehicle on Main Street and spoke with the operator.

3:00 pm A 911 caller reported an erratic operator on West Main Street. Two officers responded and subsequently arrested a 30 year-old male from Brimfield and charged him with Marked Lanes Violation, OUI Drugs, 2nd Offense and Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

1:57 pm A caller from Main Street reported that a female, who appeared to be high, came up to her asking her for gas money then took off in her vehicle toward Milford. Officer Thomas Griffin responded and advised that he did not see any violations.

1:21 pm A resident of Elizabeth Road reported that a neighbor was cutting his lawn and leaving debris in the roadway. Officer Stephen Buckley spoke with the individual who stated that he was blowing the debris in the woods.

4:33 am A 911 caller reported that a suspicious motor vehicle was sitting on the side of Granite Street with its parking lights on. Officer Linda Higgins checked the area with a negative find.

12:52 am An employee of a Wilson Street business requested extra checks of the parking lot throughout the night.

Get Tickets Now for HCA Celebration

   

    With the work on the Hopkinton Center for the Arts nearly completed, the arts center is celebrating with a fundraising gala on Saturday, November 7.

 

“Lights Up! Opening Night at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts” takes place in the HCA’s Delbridge Family Performing Arts Center.  It will feature live entertainment, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.  The entertainment will include a cellist to welcome the guests, an acoustic guitar player, a pianist playing on the center’s new grand piano and accompanied by a singer, local resident Steve Spector’s band “Hot Acoustics” and other performers. Guests can also view framed artwork by the summer art students in the Atrium Gallery.

 

The gala takes place from 7 to 11 p.m. November 7 in the performance center at the HCA, located at 98 Hayden Rowe Street.  Cocktail attire is requested.

Kevin M. Horton 66, Detective Lieutenant Retired, Massachusetts State Police Department, of Hopkinton and formerly of Natick, died Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at the Metro West Medical Center in Framingham.

He was the beloved husband of Ann K. (Rempelakis) Horton.

Funeral Mass on Tuesday, October 27th in St. John Church, Hopkinton. Visiting Hours in the Funeral Home are Monday, October, 26th from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M.
