6th Annual Foundation Day

Hopkinton Country Club

September 20, 2015 -- In 2010, Hopkinton Country Club’s General Manager and a group of its members established a charitable foundation in an effort to give back to surrounding communities. Over the last five years, the foundation has made nearly $500,000 in grants to local organizations that support children and families in a variety of ways.

 

Beginning in May, with the help of a philanthropic advisor, the HCCCF board has undergone a transformation in an effort to get more focused and strategic in its grant making, build genuine partnerships in the fields it serves and expand the awareness about the foundation’s community efforts. Going forward, the Hopkinton CC Charitable Foundation is excited to announce the commitment to two program areas: 1) Youth Development (Mentoring and Leadership Programs) and 2) Economic Assistance.

 

The foundation depends on private and corporate donations and hosts an annual golf tournament and evening gala event, featuring speakers, dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions and a raffle for a chance to win a trip to The Masters golf tournament. This year’s 6TH ANNUAL FOUNDATION DAY presented by Amica Insurance, will be held on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3RD at the Hopkinton Country Club and is open to the public.

 

The event has over 30 volunteers from the community that pitch in and will feature Marty Martinez, President of Mass Mentoring Partnership, as its keynote speaker. This year’s spotlight grant recipient will be the Mazie Mentoring Program in Framingham whose goal is to “provide guidance and support to young people who, for reasons beyond their control, face tremendous adversity on their path to success.”

Kenney/ Vorce Marriage


Life happened in the meantime," said Stephanie Kenney a few days prior to her marriage to Tom Vorce before family and friends on the Lake Whitehall Dam one week ago with Town Clerk Geri Holland officiating.

The couple was together for 31 years before deciding to make it official with a ceremony to coincide with Hopkinton's huge birthday bash.
"We had our own fireworks," Tom said.

Only the Truth Can be This Strange


    September 19, 2015 — The guy on the unregistered dirt bike above, using no directional or hand signal, and with no brake lights, blew through a stop sign and entered the roadway in front of the photographer going at a good clip for about a mile when he apparently thought he was being followed intentionally; and so he ditched down the wrong way of a one-way street and flipped off the photographer. The photographer took the next right and got a short video, a grabshot of which is above. As if that wasn't bad enough, the photographer stopped for a coffee in Hopkinton minutes later to find an individual riding around without a helmet on a small motorbike in the parking lot of a strip mall. A photo of his kid pushing it is below. Then a fully grown man was driving an unregistered golf cart down the sidewalk on Main Street. You can't make this stuff up.

Zoning Advisory Committee Invites You to a
Public Forum
Tuesday, September 29, 2015 7:00 PM

  

The Zoning Advisory Committee will hold a public forum on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at 7:00 PM in Room 211 of the Town Hall, at which time it would like to hear ideas and proposals that Town boards, committees, officials, businesses, organizations and the general public have with respect to desired changes to the Zoning Bylaw and/or the Zoning Map. Zoning bylaws generally regulate the use of land, buildings and structures. This is an opportunity to propose changes to the land uses permitted in specific areas in Hopkinton, the manner in which certain uses are permitted, dimensional requirements, or other ideas with respect to land use regulation.

The Committee invites you to the forum to present your ideas and suggestions. Proposals may also be submitted in writing. The Committee requests that if possible, a written summary of the idea or proposal be emailed to Elaine Lazarus at elainel@hopkintonma.gov  or mailed to the Land Use Department at Town Hall prior to September 25, whether or not a representative will be present at the forum.

Missing Cat

 

Our 8 year old housecat Mayday got out the other night and has been missing for two days.  She is a small cat (8lbs) and is probably quite scared to be outside.  We live on Stone Crossing so she could be in the vicinity of Carriage Hill/Hearthstone/Ash Street/Blueberry.  If you see her, please call or text 508-369-0960.  We appreciate your efforts!

Coaches vs, Cancer
 

  On October 2 the boys & girls varsity soccer teams are hosting a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society's Coaches vs. Cancer program. The girls will play Medway at 5 pm immediately followed by boys at 6:45 also against Medway.

There will be a bake sale, Wall of Hope cards to honor loved ones afflicted by cancer and raffles.

 

NOTE: Coaches vs. Cancer coaches have raised over $85 million since the program’s inception to support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a life-threatening disease.

Flushing May Cause Water Discoloration

 

Please be advised that water main flushing will take place on Legacy Farm North next Monday, and Tuesday, September 21stand 22d,  after 9:00AM to approximately 12PM.  You may notice some discoloration during and after the flushing in the Center and Eastern portions of town.  Please try and avoid doing any laundry, dishwasher loads or other water use activities that may cause discoloration to enter your home, during this time. Any discoloration that may occur will eventually dissipate. You may need to run the cold water in your home to flush your internal pipes once the flushing is complete.

Pond Street to be Closed Monday

 

The Hopkinton Police would like to advise the community that Pond Street will be closed on Monday September 21st.  A contractor will be clearing power lines for Eversource.  The work will take place in area of #59 Pond Street and go all day.  This work will require the road to be closed between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm.  Pond Street will be closed between West Elm Street and Winter Street.

September 18, 2015 - Firefighters and police responded to a pickup truck that burst into flames on East Main Street shortly after 4:30 pm this afternoon. Mouse over the image to see the fire knocked down by firefighters. A police officer said the driver got out okay.

8:50 pm Officer John Moran checked a motor vehicle on Rafferty Road and advised that there was an alcohol violation and a small amount of marijuana was destroyed at the scene.

7:24 pm A 911 caller reported an erratic operator on East Main Street. Officer Philip Powers checked the area but could not locate the vehicle.

7:07 pm The Ashland Police Department reported an erratic operator on East Main Street. Officer Philip Powers checked the area with a negative find.

5:49 pm Officer Arthur Schofield removed a group of individuals from the rope swing on Lakeshore Drive.

4:56 pm A caller reported that the clubhouse stone wall on Forest Lane had been vandalized by youths. Officer Philip Powers responded and advised that just a couple of rocks were missing and it did not appear to be vandalism.

2:12 pm Officer Philip Powers responded to John Matthew Road for a residency check.

11:04 am A resident reported that there was a suspicious white van on John Matthew Road. Officer Arthur Schofield spoke with several works on the street but could not locate the vehicle.

9:30 am Sgt. Joseph Bennett spoke with a resident who was inquiring whether a magazine salesperson, who came to her on August 27th, was a scam or not.

6:10 am A Woodview Way resident reported that there was a suspicious male in the area. Sgt. Timothy Brennan spoke with the individual who was in need of a battery jump start.

September 17, 2015 - These swimmers on Hopkinton Reservoir were unaware that there is a turkey vulture above them, one that just flew from the dam to check them  out. Their splashing and sounds of play may have been mistaken for distress by the bird.

POLL RESULTS

 September 17, 2015 -  After a 12-hour poll today inspired, by national news of police shootings and subsequent riots, results show that the Hopkinton Police Department is viewed better than their counterparts across the country.
     Nearly 89% view the HPD in a positive light, according to our poll.
   When asked similar questions of 1,000 respondents nationwide, a YouGov/Huffington Post poll revealed that 61% had some measure of trust in their local police. On the flip side, 35% responded "Not very much" or "Not at All" compared to 9% negatively in Hopkinton.

      It looks like the Hopkinton PD is ahead of the game. 

    The total votes is average on the low side, so we can be certain there was little or no tampering with the voting. If 500 people had voted in this time period, then we would suspect sabotage.

Summer Wedding

September 19, 2015 - Peter and Susan Cholakis of Hopkinton, MA and Harwichport, MA announce the wedding of their daughter Alexandra to Andrew Rowland.
       The wedding ceremony took place this summer at the Wequassett Resort on Pleasant Bay, Cape Cod.
       The couple has returned from their honeymoon in Santori and Mikonos, Greece.
       The bride is a teacher for the Ashland School District and the groom is a technology manager for CVS, Inc.
       Kate Cholakis was the maid of honor and Nick Cholakis a groomsman.

First of a Series

September 16, 2016 - Ritchie Shoemaker MD kicked off Hopkinton Drug's 2015 Lecture Series at the Senior Center Wednesday evening to a packed room.

        "This is cutting edge," said Dennis Katz, Hopkinton Drug owner. "He is talking about growing new brain cells."

        The next lecture will be held at 6:30 pm on October 8, 2015 at the Hopkinton Senior Center and will feature Binh Nguyen DC, Hopkinton Chiropractor, on the subject of lower back pain. Choose the Hopkinton Drug icon at the top of the page for the complete list.

2:52 pm Officer Philip Powers located a child on Downey Street and spoke with the child's father.

2:27 pm A caller reported that two males were putting rocks in the roadway on Lumber Street. Officer Philip Powers advised that no one was there upon his arrival and that he removed the rocks.

1:00 pm A 911 caller reported that a tractor trailer unit took out a telephone pole on Hayden Rowe Street. Three officers responded and notified the telephone and electrical companies.

3:06 am Officer Linda Higgins responded to Ashland to assist with a female prisoner.

Richard Francis Keough, 67, Graveside Service

 

Richard Francis Keough, 67, of Hopkinton, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 5, 2015. Born in Springfield, he was the son of the late Martha J. (Miller) and James R. Keough. He was the husband of the late Jacqueline L. (Brunetta) Keough who passed away in 2003.


Rick was a Navy Veteran of Vietnam serving on the USS Sierra. He was a member of the Hopkinton Auxiliary Police for 34 years and was a Boy Scout Leader.


He is survived by his children, James E. A. Keough and his wife Charlene of VA, Elizabeth L. Shuman and her husband Matthew of Hopkinton; his siblings, Susan Stoll of PA, Rick Alger of FL, and Audrey Monacelli of NC. He also leaves behind 2 grandchildren, Gary Steven and Richard Lucian.


A graveside prayer service will be held on Saturday, September 19th at 11:30a.m. at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Hopkinton. Arrangements are under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton, In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rick’s memory to, Knox Trail Council, In memory of Rick Keough 490 Union Avenue Framingham, MA. 01702

Elementary School on Fast Track
$43 Million Total Cost

September 16, 2015 - Elementary School Building Committee Member Michael Shepard, who also doubles as the town's Building Inspector, appeared before the Selectmen Tuesday evening and laid out a timeline for a Special Town Meeting and a Special Town Election for final vote in November for a new elementary school on the former Joe Irvine property that the town acquired at the May 2015 election.
     According to the ESBC website, the Mass School Building Authority is expected to vote to reimburse $14 Million of the eligible project costs, leaving the town with a $31.5 million difference to make up, some of which has already been spent. The feasibility study ($600,000) and the land acquisition ($1,800,000) are not reimbursable.

     The timeline that Mr. Shepard proposed calls for a Special Town Meeting on October 26, 2015 and a Special Election on November 9 to approve a $43 Million debt exclusion of which the town's share is expected to be $29,170,916.

Pratt Land Sale Official

September 16, 2015 - Maryanne Bilodeau, daughter of former Selectman and community activist Mary Pratt stopped by the selectmen's meeting to tell them her mother was pleased with the sale for $2.5 Million of 32 acres of their 40 acre farm to the town, which has expressed interest in it for water resources and land conservation.

      "The sale has her seal of approval," said Mrs. Bilodeau, speaking of her mother. 

      Prior to the sale, according to Attorney Wayne Davies, 1.6 acres of the land was given to the Hopkinton Scout Leaders Association to build a lodge. The location has yet to be determined.

      In addition, as part of the property redesign, Mary Pratt's home will be enhanced by 25,000 square feet to make it a conforming lot; and a 6 acre parcel that was retained, containing the former home of the late Joe Pratt, will be large enough for three house lots.

     Inasmuch as some of the land retained by the Pratts was under Chapter 61a tax classification, the selectmen needed to vote to not exercise the town's right of first refusal, which they did.

Final Sendoff

September 16, 2015 - Officer Patrick O'Brien was given kudos - and a golf club - flanked by his wife, his Chief, superiors, fellow officers and selectmen this evening, for his decades of service. He will continue to serve details during his retirement.

       Besides this evening's ceremony, Mr. O'Brien signed off on his last gas purchase for his cruiser a few weeks ago, and was thanked for his service by the dispatcher as his voice choked with emotion, and a party was held in his honor a couple of weeks ago, leading one police officer to comment humorously in the hallway after the meeting, "This is the longest retirement I've ever seen."

Plein Air Poetry Not Plain at All
  

HOPKINTON – This Saturday, local poets Polly Brown and Cheryl Perreault will host Hopkinton’s first Plein Air Poetry Reading at the Hopkinton Upper Charles Center Trail. The Art on the Trail exhibition which opened on August 2nd features nine sculptures, created and installed along the path by local mentoring artists and community organizations such as The Michael Lisnow Respite Center, Serenity House, The Hopkinton Senior Center and more.  During the opening reception, poets and community members were invited to respond to the artwork by composing site-specific, plein air-style poems inspired by the sculptures along the trail.

 

On September 19th at 2:00pm, nearly twenty poets will share the poems that they wrote in response to the Art on the Trail exhibit. The reading will take place on-site, beginning at the entrance across from Hopkinton Lumber, and will move through the trail, pausing for readings at each sculpture. The poets and writers are either residents of Hopkinton or people who have significant ties to the town. Many are published writers while others will be debuting their first poems.  

 

Please join us for this special outdoor event featuring the poetry of Marilyn Rea Beyer, Emily Mlčák, Bonnie Bishop, Violet Mlčák, Tom Driscoll, Jaclyn Perreault, Brian Forsythe, Trish Perry, Cynthia Franca, Michael Porter, Mary S. Green, Carla Schwartz, Rebekah Hoffman, Con Squires, Jeanne Kelley, Sherri Stepakoff, Trisha Knudsen, Marji Touzjian, Peter LaGoy, and Meg Tyler. These poems will be published in an online chapbook and be available for online viewing at www.hopartscenter.org. The Art on the Trail exhibition will remain on display until September 26th.

September 14, 2015 - Above, the sign says it all. Below, Planning Board member Claire Wright and Dr. Paul Wright attend the cotton candy machine at Polyarts for the Hopkinton Historical Society, which uses the proceeds for charitable purposes. The next day, Dr. Wright could be seen on a float in the parade for the 300th Anniversary dressed in Colonial garb, portraying a member of the first Town Meeting, which likely allowed only male voters. It appears from a review of the webcast at 28:21 that Mrs. Wright could be on the float "outside" of the Town Meeting, a true irony, inasmuch as she is on several boards or committees.


Below, the Metrowest Symphony Orchestra, which had four Hopkinton student players, is surrounded by enchanted fans prior to the "1812 Overture," which led to a remarkable fireworks display. Many people expressed interest in having fireworks every year.

Very Spirited Parade - Well Done

Bravo! Kudos'! Congratulations! Way to Go? Good Job! and last but not least…OMG

This committee should get some sort of an award from the Town of Hopkinton. Every single minute was spectacular, the ceremony for the fountain was beautiful and for me emotional, have a sense of peace when I look at the beauty of the water flowing out of the fountain, something I have never seen on the Hopkinton common until now.

 

Light up the Night was a fun evening for all ages, everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time and the fire works were the best ever. Yesterday's parade was great, my family and I were talking about it later in the evening and we kept changing what was our favorite, did not come to a final overall favorite because there were so many on our lists.

So over and above the wonderful things that we were able to do over this past weekend, we also were able to be with extended family and just enjoy it all.

 

Also thought Polyarts was the excellent this year, seemed to be many more vendors and just beautiful items and extremely talented people.

Editor's Notes:

• WOW! What a great time, even though this writer was working the entire time (I promise to get a new tripod or steadycam). The fountain, the music, the orchestra the kids' entertainment, the food trucks, the fireworks, and wow! again, the parade. A huge, heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in bringing the town together for such a cohesive weekend of events. Thanks also to the brave first responders for being there to protect us from the chaos going on outside of the community.

 

• As many know, there is a video recording of the HopNews webcam capture of the entire parade. There were a few people who missed it because they were out of town, or who might have moved, but were able log on and see it live from the webcam we faced toward the west. There were 300 unique users who logged on and watched from away, or from home, a total of 449 times yesterday. Thank you to those who told us their loved ones were watching. It makes what we do even more worthwhile.

 

• During the videotaping of the performance of the Metrowest Symphony Orchestra someone said, "Hi, Bob" as they passed by me while I held a microphone in one hand and a camera in the other. So, in order to make lemonade out of lemons, we offered $50 to the first person to email the time on the video where it occurred. I checked the time casually beforehand, and took mental note of the approximate time, but not anticipate the predicament to come. "Hello" occurred at 2:13 and Bob" occurred at 2:14. So, we have two winners to split the $50; $25 each to Olivia Spar and Allison Johnson, the first two submissions.

3:49 pm Officer William Burchard arrested Alessandro Felisberto, 20, of Hollis Street, Framingham, on Wilson Street for Four Warrants and also charged him with Operating a Motor Vehicle With License Revoked as Habitual Traffic Offender.

Sunday, September 13, 2015

8:32 pm A 911 caller from Connelly Hill Road reported that a snake was in their garage. Officer Peter Booth responded and removed a three foot rat snake.

7:41 pm A walk-in reported that his car was struck while it was parked at the high school for the 300th activities.

5:00 pm A female caller was looking for personal information on a past employee and refused to give an address. She hung up before any additional information was gathered.

2:54 pm A caller on Main Street reported that his baby was locked in his vehicle. Officer Aaron O'Neil assisted with gaining access.

2:48 pm Officer Philip Powers assisted a golf cart that broke down on Grove Street.

11:52 am Officer Philip Powers had a vehicle towed from Main Street after unsuccessfully trying to contact the operator.

1:24 am Sgt. Timothy Brennan spoke with the operator of a motor vehicle behind the high school who stated that he was security for the inflatable equipment.

11:43 pm Sgt. Timothy Brennan spoke with an elderly woman who requested an officer perform a well being check for her parents on Hayden Rowe Street. He then spoke with her husband who stated that her parents had been deceased for sometime now and she did not have a clear mind because she injured her head.

10:56 pm A walk-in turned in a wallet that was recovered from the fireworks display.

10:43 pm A caller from Hayden Rowe Street reported losing a set of keys.

9:33 pm Officer John Moran issued several motor vehicles parking tickets on Pleasant Street, Maple Street and Hayden Rowe Street.

8:27 pm A resident of Briarcliff Drive reported that a suspicious vehicle was in the roadway. Officer Peter Booth spoke with the operator and sent them on their way.

8:24 pm A Curtis Road resident reported seeing large fireworks behind her house. She was notified that the town had a large fireworks display.

8:12 pm A caller from West Main Street reported that fireworks were being set off nearby. Officer William Burchard checked the area with a negative find.

7:35 pm The State Police transferred a 911 call regarding a road rage incident on Route 495. The caller refused to go to the police station to file a report.

7:14 pm A 911 caller from Hayden Rowe Street reported that her son has been harassed by two individuals for the past five years. Two officers responded and wrote a report.

6:36 pm A motorist reported that a motorcycle was driving 120mph on Route 495. The State Police were notified.

6:18 pm A motorist complained about a heavy traffic situation on Hayden Rowe Street. Officer William Burchard responded and determined that all the vehicles were parked properly and traffic was able to pass.

5:38 pm A caller complained that multiple vehicles were parked illegally on Chamberlain Street. Officer Aaron O'Neil responded and spoke with the residents who moved their vehicles.

1:35 pm Officer Philip Powers issued a motor vehicle a parking violation on Park Street.

10:39 am Officer Stephen Buckley removed several vehicles from the area of Park Street.

6:32 am A walk-in turned in a wallet with identification that was found at the Bellingham movie theater. The owner was contacted and picked it up.

6:25 am A caller reported construction on Elm Street in violation of the town by-law. Officer Linda Higgins spoke with the construction company who had a broken down truck.

6:10 pm Officer John Moran issued a motor vehicle a ticket for parking in a handicapped spot on Davis Road.

6:00 pm Officer John Moran spoke with the operator of a motor vehicle who drove through a prohibited access way on Main Street.

3:49 pm A 911 caller reported a motor vehicle accident on Wilson Street. Two officers responded and subsequently arrested a 20 year-old male from Framingham for Four Warrants and also charged him with Operating a Motor Vehicle with License Revoked as HTO.

3:15 pm A caller wished to express her gratitude towards the Police Department.

8:31 am Officer Thomas Griffin spoke with a construction crew who was taking up a lane of travel on East Main Street.

6:48 am An employee of a Main Street business reported finding an open door. Two officers checked the area and advised that all was in good order.

Christine Rose Gorman, 83

Christine Rose Gorman, 83, of Hopkinton, passed away September 6, 2015. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Josephine (Lorenzo) and Albert Alberico. She was the wife of William F. Gorman of Hopkinton. 
Christine was a graduate of Framingham High School. Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, Diane Crosby, Michael Gorman, William A. Gorman, and Donna Mulhall. Funeral Services were held privately and arrangements are under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton,

This past summer, Life Scout Matthew Paolucci, a current HHS Junior, elected to clear and groom the Brook Hollow Sharon deGozzaldi Memorial Trail off of Cross Street as part of his Eagle Scout project. He writes that the three-quarter mile long trail is clear and groomed but needs help from the community.

"This beautiful trail is cleared, groomed and and now eagerly awaiting foot traffic," he writes. "The more foot traffic the better to keep weeds and ferns from taking over, as it was when I started the project."

The trail is open to all, including pets and horses. Matthew has installed three benches for "quiet reflection and relaxation."

The site is property of the Hopkinton Area Land Trust (HALT).

"Please come out and enjoy this beautiful new trail.  It will help to preserve and maintain it with more foot traffic," Matthew writes.

Wow, what a weekend!

September 13, 2015 - What a great parade  the volunteers arranged for the rest of us to enjoy. Some of those marching bands and acts cost money, which we understand was collected through the sales of 300th merchandise and the redemption of bottles and cans.

       Above is the last vehicle in the parade, which HopNews webcast and recorded. If YouTube continues, we'll have the entire thing up before 9:00 pm tonight. We also have an abundance of photos we'll be processing, too. Stay tuned, we'll be back later.

      NOTE: Some people argue that Hopkinton is no longer the highest town in Middlesex County, saying that was just a Seventies thing.

We did that so that those who may have moved away, or could not get Downtown, could see it while it happened.

All Roads Leading to Center will be Closed for Parade

 

On Sunday September 13th, 2015, there will be a 300th parade that will start at the High School and end at the High School. All roads leading into the center of Town will be closed and detoured from 11:45 a.m. until approximately 3:00 p.m. Detours, signs and Police officers will be posted to assist in the rerouting of traffic. Motorists should expect delays and adjust for time or seek alternate routes. Route 135 will be closed at Main St, both East and Westbound. Rte 85 will be closed at Rafferty Rd and Chestnut St. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience. Any questions please contact the Department at 508-497-3401.

Michael R. Nolette, 64

 

Michael R. Nolette, 64, of Hopkinton, MA, passed away on September 8, 2015 following a brief illness. He leaves behind his loving fiancée, Judy Johnson.

He was predeceased by his mother and father. Surviving family are his sisters, Judy Nolette of Ohio and Nancy Gamache of RI.

Mike was born in Biddeford, ME and was a 1973 graduate of Bryant University in Smithfield, RI. He had a successful career as a Controller/CFO for many years, retiring in 2012.

 

Mike was an accomplished musician and enjoyed writing, performing, recording and listening to music. He was an avid movie buff, loved animals (especially his 2 cats) and enjoyed photography, cooking and watching Patriots football.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Callahan Cronin Funeral Home of Hopkinton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike's memory to: Baypath Humane Society, Hopkinton or National Breast Cancer Society, 3934 Miller Rd., Newtown Sq., PA 19073.
