Boston Police Act on Social Media Threats to Pokemon Gathering

Suspects travelled from Iowa

BOSTON, MASS - August 24, 2015 - On Thursday, August 20, 2015, members of the Boston Regional Intelligence Center (BRIC) received information from private sector public safety personnel at the Hynes Convention Center at 900 Boylston Street in District D-4 (South End) regarding threats of violence made over social media to attendees of the Pokemon World Championships.

Security officers at the Hynes, officers in District D-4, and the BRIC immediately began investigation into these threats, and hours later, the two male suspects were stopped attempting to enter the event. BRIC and D-4 Detectives responded to further investigate. Detectives were informed that the suspects had driven to the event from Iowa and were in possession of several firearms in their vehicle. The suspects could not produce a License to Carry. Officers seized the vehicle, and the suspects were released pending a search warrant.

On Friday, August 21, 2015, detectives received and executed a search warrant for the suspect vehicle. Upon execution of the warrant, detectives recovered one 12-gauge Remington shotgun, one DPMS Model AR-15 rifle, several hundred rounds of ammunition, and a hunting knife. An arrest warrant was issued for the two suspects.

With the assistance of the Saugus Police Department, BPD detectives located and arrested the suspects at a Saugus hotel. Eighteen-year-old Kevin Norton (Right) and 27 year-old James Stumbo, both of Iowa, were arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and other firearm related charges. The suspects will be arraigned at Boston Municipal Court.

Wrong Way Driver Dies in Crash on I-190

STERLING, MA - August 23, 2015  - Last evening, at approximately 7:40 p.m., troopers from the State Police Barracks in Holden responded to reports of a wrong-way driver, traveling northbound on Interstate 190 southbound in Sterling. While troopers responded, the wrong-way vehicle struck two vehicles traveling southbound.

Upon arrival, troopers discovered that the wrong-way vehicle, a 2015 Nissan Versa driven by a 39-year-old woman from Worcester, clipped a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by a 51-year-old Shrewsbury woman. The wrong-way Versa then struck head-on, a 2000 Volvo V70 station wagon, driven by a 64-year-old Worcester man.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle,  JEANETTE D. ADAMS, 39 of Worcester, was transported by ambulance to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center (UMass) in Worcester (Lakeside campus) where she was determined to be deceased as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the Volvo was flown by medical helicopter to UMass Worcester (Lakeside) with serious, life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Trailblazer was also transported by ambulance to UMass Worcester (Lakeside) with non-life threatening injuries.

During the incident, all lanes of Interstate 190 were closed to traffic. Traffic was diverted off at exit 6 onto Route 12 in Sterling until approximately 9:40 p.m. All lanes were reopened at approximately 10:08 p.m.

The remaining facts and circumstances of the crash are currently under investigation by troopers from the Holden Barracks and troopers assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. 82 Trucks Forget to "Move Over"

August 22, 2015 - Yesterday, the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section (CVES) was out in force in Worcester and Bristol Counties enforcing the state’s Move Over law. The CVES stopped 82 commercial vehicles, issued 103 citations, and summonsed four drivers for operating on suspended licenses. These enforcement efforts will continue in counties across the state.

In Massachusetts the Move Over Law aims to make police, firefighters, paramedics, tow truck drivers, and all roadside emergency and maintenance professionals safer on the job. The Move Over Law, which took effect March 22, 2009, requires drivers approaching a stationary emergency or maintenance vehicle with flashing lights to move to the next adjacent lane if it is safe to do so, and, barring that, to reduce their speed. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to $100.

Every year, first responders across the country are injured or killed on the job while providing emergency help. All citizens are asked to make a personal pledge to always move over to make Massachusetts roadways safer for everyone. MSP Release.

Professional Boxer Arraigned On Assault And Battery Charge

WOBURN – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced that boxer Richard “Dicky” Eklund, 58, of Lowell, was arraigned in Lowell District Court today on a charge of assault and battery on a family or household member.

Judge Neil Hourihan set bail at $500 cash and ordered the defendant to stay away from, and have no contact with, the victim. The next scheduled hearing for Eklund is Monday, September 21.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., on Thursday, August 20, Lowell Police responded to a report of a domestic assault. The victim stated that the defendant had allegedly grabbed her by the arm and thrown her to the ground resulting in bruising on the victim’s arm and chest.

Eklund is known for boxing professionally and was portrayed by Christian Bale in the 2010 film The Fighter, for which Bale won an Academy Award. Wikipedia photo.

Police Seize Cultivated Marijuana Plants

 On 8/14/2015 at 5:00pm the Hopkinton Police Department executed a search warrant at 37 Fruit Street.

This warrant execution was part of an investigation conducted by Hopkinton Police Detectives with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Airwing and the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.

58 mature marijuana plants were seized from an outdoor cultivation area on the property. 12 young plants were also seized from inside the home. Additionally, nearly 30 ounces of marijuana that had already been cultivated were seized. This included nearly 9 ounces of marijuana that had been packaged for distribution.

The average yield of an outdoor cultivated plant is recognized by law enforcement to be 16 oz of consumable marijuana. Based on the the average street price of $250-300 per ounce the seizure is valued between $239,000 and $287,000.

The residents, who were leasing the property are being charged with Possession of a Class D Substance with Intent to Distribute, Possession of a Class D Substance with Intent to Manufacture, and Conspiracy to Violate the Controlled Substances Act.

Chief Lee stated “This was an outstanding piece police work by lead investigator Det. Gregg DeBoer and Det. David Shane. This is a huge seizure, preventing a sizable amount of illegal marijuana from making it onto the streets.
