Recycled Railroad Bed
July 30, 2015 — Denise Antaki and poodle took a walk
on the Center Trail today and shared a photo of this
work in progress. The Art on the Trail show begins
on Sunday, August 2, 2015 at the trail head across
from Hopkinton Lumber.
This Sunday: Art on The
Trail at Hopkinton's Center Trail !
Some of the projects were
produced by community groups such as the Michael
Lisnow Respite Center, the Senior Center,
Serenity House, and the Girl Scouts, with others
by individual artists. At 2:15 speakers will
deliver introductory remarks at the Center Trail
entrance across from Hopkinton Lumber, and at
2:45, the artists will accompany the group on a
walk to visit each installation. The exhibition
will be on display through September 26.
Lauren Scheuer will
construct an elegant natural carpet design over
50 feet long using small colored pebbles and
landscaping sand. Reminiscent of Tibetan
mandalas, she’ll create the piece over three
days; it will slowly disintegrate over the eight
weeks of the exhibition.
A giant nest, designed by
Geri Holland and the women of Serenity House,
explores ideas surrounding home and nurturing.
Carol Mecagni, leading a group of Senior Center
ceramic sculptors, will place a series of
ceramic tiles they fashioned for this project
along the trail.
The sculptors featured in the display include Cathy Howe and Peter Glenn working with residents of the Respite Center to build a large, whimsical birdhouse. Local Girl Scout Troop 85290, led by Sherri Galego and Robin Batchelder, bridged the generation gap with residents of Golden Pond for their installation.
Cathy Weaver Taylor, using colorful recycled nets will be suspending mobile mandalas. “Sky Warrior,” a shimmering dress by Virginia Fitzgerald, will float above the trail.
During the exhibition,
nearly 20 local poets, led by Polly Brown and
Cheryl Perreault, will tour the trail and
respond to the artwork with original poems they
will compose en plein air. On September 19, a
poetry reading featuring these pieces will add
another dimension to the Art on the Trail. Please join us in celebrating the arts in Hopkinton at the inaugural Art on the Trail exhibition! |

Crosspoint Continues
Construction During Appeal Period Appeal date is tentatively scheduled by Robert Falcione July 29, 2015 — In spite of several days with no construction trades workers showing up to work at the former Colella's Supermarket, Lisa Nickerson of NickersonPR, spokesperson for Crosspoint Associates, the new owner of the property, denies that any work has halted as a result of the appeal of the building permit by a group opposing CVS as a tenant. The document below indicates an understanding by Crosspoint, on behalf of CVS, that there will be no walk-in medical services nor drive-thru window under that permit.
An applicant who has received a building permit has a choice to proceed or not proceed after being informed of the potential of an appeal. If they choose to proceed and the appellant eventually prevails, then the applicant could be forced to restore the property to its previous condition. In the letter below, Jay McSweeney, Director of Construction for Crosspoint, agrees that he understands that working during the appeal process is at their own risk. Even if the appeal is not won by the anti-CVS group, that group will have the option of appealing to Land Court. A recent Hopkinton case is similar. The approval of a Dunkin' Donuts at 76 West Main Street ended up being appealed to Land Court by an abutter. The owner, Gene Sardinha, whose family owns many Dunkin' Donuts franchises, demolished the buildings (HopNews video) that existed on the lot despite the appeal. At the time he said it was for safety reasons, because the buildings were dilapidated, and he would need to tear them down regardless of what he eventually builds on the land. But he did not gamble by beginning construction on the planned Dunkin' Donuts building. That appeal is still waiting its hearing, and another construction season is slipping away without any cement being poured, nearly one year later. Crosspoint is proceeding with its interior redesign and sign construction and at its own peril, although only the signage changes will be evident on the exterior of the building before a tenant opens its doors to the public. The Public Hearing of the appeal is scheduled for a slot before the Board of Appeals on September 9, 2015. The hearings begin at 7:15, minutes into the 7:00 pm start of the meeting. The date is not yet written in stone; it is tentative, subject to variables that could change, and has not been duly posted. There is plenty of time to do so before the anticipated date.

Thanks to Many Supporters
Editor: Friends 4 Eva and the Harris
Family wish to extend their deepest appreciation to
all of our many supporters. Thanks to your efforts,
we raised over $11,000 from our recent 6THAnnual
Heather’s Ride on July 11th. The proceeds go
directly to Boston Children’s Hospital-Heather
Siebert Patient Support Fund. This fund assists
patients and their families with expenses not
covered by insurance including those associated with
allowing parents to be with their children during
frequent hospitalizations. This fund has already
helped many, many families.
Not only did we have 120 motorcycles, we had a large number of non-motorcyclist participants who enjoyed music by the local band “The Tim & Dave Show” during an old-fashioned cookout sponsored by Laconia Harley Davidson followed by ice cream courtesy of Ben & Jerry’s for dessert. The State Police escorted ride covered 120 miles through the White Mountains and over the Kancamagus Highway. Riders enjoyed discovering back roads and covered bridges with beautiful weather. The crowd enjoyed the chance to win Red Sox tickets as well as numerous other prizes. All prizes were donated–thank you!

Planning Board Meeting
Horse Farm Seeks Change
Solar Seeks Approval Hopkinton Drug Talks Parking July 27, 2015 - Realtor Jim Fletcher, speaking for Valerie LePage, owner of a therapeutic horse riding business on East Main Street (File photo), said that noise from the construction at Legacy Farms has made it too difficult to continue. He said they have reached out to the market unsuccessfully, and feel they may need to request a rezoning away from residential. The board was not warm to the idea of rezoning for commercial purposes. Chairman Ken Weismantel suggested that Ms. LePage could get a subdivision of three homes "off the bat." Legacy Farms owner Roy MacDowell spoke with Ms. LePage in the time between her scheduling the agenda item and this evening's presentation. He said he might like to begin discussions of buying the property, not for commercial purposes, but for irrigation. If he developed it, he said, it would be for some sort of residential. These preliminary discussions ended with Mr. Weismantel suggesting that Ms. LePage reach out to neighbors. Marathon Solar LLC returned to the board with modifications to their East Main Street 15-acre solar farm plan resulting from their meeting with the Conservation Commission. The representative informed the board that the solar farm would contribute $15,000 toward future landscape screening from the future marathon facility . He said they met with the Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission as well as a representative of the 26.2 Foundation. "We want to be a partner and support whatever happens on that site," the representative said. Board member Claire Wright said that in 20 years, this solar will not be the latest and greatest technology. "I would bet my BETA tapes and my floppy disks," she said. She was not happy with the agreement surrounding the lack of a performance bond, the money that would be available if the company goes under. She wanted the town to have direct access to the funds so that 15 acres of rusting solar panels could be removed without delay if the company no longer exists in 20 years. The solar farm is proposed on land owned by Roger Mezitt, land that was formerly a farm not for solar, but for trees and shrubs. Despite the representative from Marathon Solar pleading that he needed swift approval to take advantage of the "construction window," Parks and Rec Commission member Eric Sonnett spoke against the project, saying his board voted unanimously to not support it. He read a letter from the commission into the record. The board did not vote on the matter this evening. A Davenport Village representative appeared before the board to discuss signs at his condo complex on Hayden Rowe Street. He was ordered to remove one that was "carved in stone," a term usually reserved to indicate an irreversible condition, an irony not lost on those at the meeting. The builder agreed to change the carved words to indicate the name of the street, Bucklin Lane. The Planning Board has, for at least 15 years according to member Claire Wright, not allowed a neighborhood to have a named sign, except during sales of the dwellings. The builder agreed that "Bucklin Lane" will be the newly carved name. Hopkinton Drug owner Dennis Katz was on hand to discuss a letter he sent to the board asking them to concentrate on a municipal parking remedy for the town. In his letter, Mr. Katz detailed how his lot has always been open to the public, but with the addition of three new businesses, the situation has become difficult, with customers of those businesses now taking prime parking spots. Mr. Weismantel noted with a smile that Mr. Katz's compounding business has grown, too, adding the need for more spaces for his employees. Mr. Weismantel said that it would be a good time to reconsider the board's relaxation of the parking requirements for new businesses in the Downtown The board has recently approved plans with only half of the previously required spaces. He also noted the need for municipal parking, as well as restrictions Hopkinton Drug has placed on non-shoppers parking in its lot. The board had drafted a response to Mr. Katz's letter, and approved it by a vote this evening, making it official. That letter is here. |

Temporary Surge
July 25, 2015 - It appears from the view from the HopNews webcam at 7:30 am today that all of the parking spaces within view are filled, necessitating an urban type of "space-saver" barrel in front of the Lovely Lady Salon. This photo comes on the heels of an offer by Crosspoint Associates, publicized here late yesterday afternoon, for people to use its parking lot at the former Colella's for Downtown purposes. It may have been too late for members of the Running Club, who are likely the ones filling the spaces, to learn of the offer and take advantage of it. Patrons of the salon are unlikely candidates for the offer, because many of them are elderly and need a nearby space. |

They are offering the former Colella's parking lot to shoppers in the Downtown, who might like to park conveniently and walk to another location in the Downtown. Please note, however, that the lights at Colella's go out at 10:00 p.m., the latest closing time for businesses in the area. In addition, please note also that the Colella family continues to operate the liquor department.
A representative for Crosspoint said things might change once CVS opens and it is determined how many spaces they will need dedicated to people shopping there.
But for now, the invitation from Crosspoint Associates has no limit. |

5th annual Thomas Weaver Memorial Event
The 5th annual Thomas Weaver Memorial alumni lacrosse game, which will be held from 2-4pm on August 22nd at the Fruit Street Field complex in Hopkinton (66 Fruit Street), is a lacrosse match between the HHS boys varsity team and HHS alumni athletes who played on the varsity team. B+ (Be Positive!) apparel and decals will be sold at the event and admission will be $3 per person, with all proceeds going to the Thomas Patrick Weaver Memorial Fund for scholarships to benefit HHS graduates, cancer research, and support of organizations/people in need.
We hope to see friends of Tom to share their memories and remember the great young man that he was, alumni to reconnect with fellow classmates, and those who never knew Tom - to learn about the power of a positive attitude and to see how Tom's outlook on life has affected those around him in such an incredible way! Join us for a fun day of lacrosse but, more importantly, a day of positivity!
Any questions about the event may be directed to Samuel MacDonald via email at: Samuelmcmacdonald@gmail.com" |
