Hopkinton Reaches Affordable
Housing Threshold
April 24, 2005—According
to correspondence from the Commonwealth
Massachusetts Department of Housing and
Community Development (DHCD), Hopkinton has
exceeded its threshold of 10% of affordable
housing stock with the approval of the
Hopkinton Mews, a 280 unit housing project
approved for Lumber Street to be built by
Mill Creek. If a town has less than 10% of
its housing stock deemed affordable as
defined by Mass General Law Chapter 40B,
then a developer need not comply with local
bylaws, but only apply for a Comprehensive
Permit from the local Board of Appeals with
approval from the state. The Mill Creek
project is such a project, but its approval
for inclusion in Hopkinton's Subsidized
Housing Inventory (SHI) brings the
town's affordable housing stock to 14.15%
according the DHCD, thwarting any such
future 40B projects.
What this means for developers is that
they will need to comply with local bylaws,
which do not allow for such dense
developments that are buildable under the
Comprehensive Permit guidelines. The
projects will need to go through the normal
planning and permitting process.
Hopkinton Mews has been called a "friendly"
40B project, because the land owner, Paul
Mastroianni has negotiated with the town in
a Host Community Agreement, which will offer
benefits and mitigation for traffic impact
and road widening.

Caregivers, Parents, Loved Ones, and Anyone Who
Wants to Learn More About Autism
Summer can be an
especially dangerous time for those with Autism
as they are often attracted to bodies of water.
Drowning is the number one cause of premature
death for individuals with Autism.
Police officers are often called to a home to
assist a caregiver with locating an Autistic
person who has wandered. We recognize that
caregivers of loved ones with Autism have a huge
responsibility. It is our hope that this event
will provide valuable safety information to
loved ones. We also believe this event will be
a great opportunity for our officers to receive
additional information from caregivers about
● Specially trained search and rescue police
officers, station tour, and emergency vehicles
on scene
● Officers will be distributing Autism safety
items to include tip sheets, and identification
cards
● Caregivers will be able to develop a 911
“script” with the assistance of search and
rescue police officers
● Bounce House, light refreshments & more.
