Rollover in Hopkinton

March 11, 2015 — At about 4:15 p.m. today, a 2006 Mini Cooper was traveling on Route 495 North in Hopkinton when the operator lost control of the vehicle, causing it to rollover and crash into the median. Thankfully, Lieutenant Daniel Richard of the State Police Office of Media Relations happened to be traveling behind the vehicle prior to the crash, as he was on his way home from a 3-day training on Human Trafficking. Lieutenant Richard and several concerned motorists were able to extricate the woman from the vehicle and tend to her injuries until Hopkinton Fire and EMS arrived on scene.

The driver, 35-year-old Alyssa Springer of East Natick, was transported to Framingham Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Also assisting on scene was Trooper Joel Nunes of the State Police Barracks in Millbury. Traffic was impacted for about 30 minutes during the investigation and cleanup. The cause remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.

Permanent Building Committee Announces Refinement of Library Design

March 11,  2015 — Since the May 2014 Town Meeting and Town Election, when residents approved funding for the Library building project, Hopkinton’s Permanent Building Committee (PBC) has been hard at work refining the plans for the restoration, renovation and expansion of Hopkinton Public Library.

Based on feedback from members of the community before and after Town Meeting, as well as extensive discussions with the immediate neighbors of the Library, the PBC has been working diligently with Johnson Roberts Architects to refine the design of the Library to address three primary concerns: (1) reducing the “bulk” of the proposed expansion; (2) preserving the interior space of the former church; and (3) increasing the distance between the Library expansion and the neighboring property lines. Johnson Roberts has done a remarkable job addressing these concerns, while at the same time maintaining a functional, historically sensitive, and beautiful design.

Developer Agrees to Another $112,000
"I'm  not going to be an open checkbook." Paul Mastroianni

Above, West Main and Lumber Street intersection, true to compass. Former Golden Spoon Restaurant  is far right, bottom.

March 10, 2015 — Entrepreneur Paul Mastroianni took part in another segment of the continued Planning Board Public Hearing regarding his Neighborhood Mixed Use District Master Plan Special Permit application for 250,000 square feet of  commercial development and 280 dwelling units on 96 acres off of Lumber Street.

Advocating for the developer, Traffic Engineer Robert Michaud, said a right turn lane from West Main Street eastbound onto Lumber Street would need to be 300' long to be effective, as shown in the overhead above. He said another 300' of transition to the 300' lane would be necessary.

Although Mr. Michaud presented what he considered the best scenario, it was also the most expensive.

The Planning Board negotiated a right of way  from the developer of the Starbucks to be built at 85 West Main Street for the future right turn onto Lumber, but had no engineering done. It was apparent to the gathering that Cumberland Farms' land would need to be part of any 300' solution.

"Someone has to start a conversation with Cumberland Farms," said Planning Board member Francis DeYoung.

Mr. Mastroianni protested that the right turn lane only came up with the sale of the Golden Spoon.

"No one was willing to knock down the Golden Spoon," said Planning Board Chair Ken Weismantel [The new Starbucks will be in a new building after the current one is demolished, and will be set back to allow for a right of way for a turning lane.].

"We put up a million dollars for you to do whatever you want to do [with it]," Mr. Mastroianni said.

"If it wasn't for your project, we wouldn't need a right turn lane," said Planning Board member John Ferrrari, insinuating that Mr. Mastroianni pay up.

"I am not going to be an open checkbook," said Mr. Mastroianni.

"If I don't build the commercial, I don't need to build a right turn lane," he said, coaxing a more conciliatory tone from the board members. The commercial, revenue positive part of the project will offset what is expected to be the revenue negative effect of the 280 dwelling units in the residential component of the project, which is a 40B, affordable housing development.

Mr. Mastroianni agreed to add $112,000 to the $1,000,000 he has already pledged to the town.

"Either I am going to build it  or not," he said, signaling a limit to his contributions with an implied threat to pull  out..

The Public Hearing was continued until March 23, 2015.

Timeless - Celebrating Hopkinton's 300th Anniversary

March 6, 2015 — The photo of Center School, above, was taken in 1992, on its 65th Anniversary, for the Hopkinton Town Report. Also on the front cover of the town report was an additional  photo, one of the school before the left-side addition. It looks like there could be some third grade students in the photo above of at least four classes, so the oldest student would be around 31 years old today, perhaps with a child of their own attending the school. The original image above was captured with black and white film. The negative was scanned electronically today, and the sepia-tone was added before uploading.

Deck Collapse

March 5, 2015 — The weight of heavy snow, and wood having been exposed to the elements for 20 years, combined to contribute to a deck collapsing behind a home on Hidden Brick Road this afternoon. The occupants heard the crash, which brought them to the sliders overlooking the deck, where a strong odor of natural gas was the catalyst for them immediately evacuating their home and calling the Fire Department. Above, firefighters apprise the Director of Municipal Inspections, Charles Kadlik of the situation. A representative of the gas company was on scene in minutes. Below, the underside of the deck in the photo, and the separation from the railing structure on the right give testimony to its collapse against the building.

Fifth Annual Boosters Fundraiser

March 4, 2015 — Sign up today for the Hopkinton High School Athletic Boosters fifth annual sports fundraiser to be held at the Hopkinton Country Club on Saturday, March 14, from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Tickets are now only $60 per person. Back by popular demand, “Hot Acoustics” band will rock the house and there will be plenty of cool raffle prizes and silent auction items such as sports artwork from the NE Sports Museum. A fun, casual evening is planned. R.S.V.P. by signing up at www.hopkintonboosters.com  or by sending a check (made out to HHS Boosters) with ticket request to: Boosters Fundraiser, c/o Donohue, 41 Blueberry Lane, Hopkinton, MA  01748 .

Last year, funds from this event helped the high school remodel the entire weight room which is now being used by all teams, all sports. It’s also a great, safe place for students to go after school to meet friends and work out. This year, some of the funds will continue toward that effort and some will go to significantly sprucing up the concession stand at the outdoor track/football field – which also is enjoyed by all. Please help in this effort by attending the fundraiser – together we can do it – and help keep Hopkinton High School facilities among the best in the MetroWest!  HopNews file photo.

Call for Sculpture Submissions

This year, the Hopkinton Center for the Arts and the Upper Charles Trail Committee are inaugurating the first Hopkinton Center Trail Art Walk. The Art Walk will host six to eight outdoor sculpture projects at highly visible sites along the Center Trail.  There will be a selection of artwork from experienced sculptors as well as community groups interested in working with an artist mentor to create a sculpture. The projects will be displayed to the public in August and September.

The Center Trail, approximately one mile long, follows the historic railroad bed built in 1863, through beautiful wooded glades, from Main Street near the center of town to the Hopkinton School campus. The trail is well traveled and enjoyed by residents and students.  A map of the full trail and photos are available at: – http://uctc.hopkintonma.gov/
