More to Come December 28, 2014 — This
familiar building Downtown Hopkinton is in the
middle of a makeover, inside and out. Four
apartments on the second floor are stripped to
the studs, ready for new bathrooms and kitchens
with granite countertops. Owner Greg Mazur has
acquired the services of Ed Tarca (Westcott
Drive, Cranberry Cove) for the redo. The
exterior has been stripped of its asbestos
siding, ready for a modern look, and the top of
the building will be getting a cap (See sample,
top left), which it has been missing since the
Hurricane of 1938 blew
the third floor onto Walcott Street. The handicap washrooms will likely enable seating in the eateries. |

Pepper-Spray Trooper Returned to Full Duty
December 27, 2014 — The individual who posted a video of himself being pepper-sprayed by a state trooper during a demonstration in Boston on Dec. 4 has, to this point, neither made himself available for interview by department investigators nor filed a citizen’s complaint with the State Police concerning the matter. Despite the department’s efforts to visit the individual at his residence; leave contact information at a location he frequents; directly speak with a relative; and finally, to send a written request for cooperation via certified mail to his residence, the department’s efforts have gone unanswered.
The State Police have consistently expressed an interest in this individual’s version of the events as well as viewing any additional video he may have from the incident. Absent his cooperation, a fair and complete assessment of the incident remains incomplete.
The trooper depicted in the video, who was initially placed on restricted duty, was recently returned to full duty. The department’s internal investigation is ongoing.
In keeping with our practice throughout the investigation of this incident, we are not releasing the name of the trooper or the protester. — MSP PR. Photo: Screenshot from subject's video of himself. |

Fatal Crash on I-495 North in Franklin
December 27, 2014 — Yesterday at 3:37 p.m., troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Foxboro responded to a crash on Route 495 northbound in Franklin. The initial investigation by Trooper Brad Kessel indicates that a 2014 Honda CRV, operated by a 46-year-old man from Middleboro, was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed, changing lanes into the right lane, when the CRV struck the rear end of a 2005 Jeep Wrangler, operated by 49-year-old William Leahy of Bennington, New Hampshire. The CRV exited the roadway after the collision and struck a rocky abutment at a high rate of speed, rolling over after the impact.
The operator of the CRV was incapacitated and troopers performed CPR until Franklin EMS arrived and transported him to Milford Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The operator of the Jeep suffered no injuries and the vehicle was able to be driven after the crash.
Troopers assigned to the Collision Analysis and Reconstructions Section, Crime Scene Services Section, Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office, and the Troop H Detectives are assisting in the investigation. Also assisting at the scene were a patrol supervisor, Franklin Fire Department and MassDOT. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Sergeant Daniel O’Sullivan stated that the initial investigation indicates speed was a factor. — MSP PR |

From the
Radical Middle
The Leader of Moronica
by Robert Falcione December 26, 2014 — The impending release of Sony Pictures' The Interview, a full length satirical movie about an attempt to assassinate of the leader of North Korea starring Seth Rogan and James Franco, inspired North Korea's security services, we are told by our leadership, to hack into Sony's Secure Information, destroy some finished films, and make some of their secure information public. They have threatened to hack a lot more, as well as attack the White House, and some other nonsense that, again we are told, regularly comes out of that country when its leader throws a tantrum. I didn't plan to see the movie, which was scheduled for a Christmas Day release — which is a rather rude and anti-Christian thing to do in the first place — because it looked like it was made for a different demographic than mine, a nearly 68 year-old conservative thinker who would rather not be reminded of bodily functions during any movie, not even during a movie about bodily functions. Another reason to not find joy in the movie is that it has been advertised as a fun look at a plot to assassinate the leader of North Korea. George Bush didn't think it was funny when the former leader of Iraq put out a hit on his father when he was president. It isn't a very polite thing to do. During the trailer, it doesn't take long for both lead characters to say the word "poop," which has been voted as the favorite word of 7 year-olds for several years in a row, thereby exposing the movie's targeted demographic. The stars, Seth Rogan, who has never said anything in public that wasn't followed by his own unbridled laughter, and James Franco, who has never spoken in public unscripted, starred in another film together, centered around pot. And if I remember correctly, one or more is routinely involved in romantic comedies about relationships that don't exist in the real world, but might be believable to oh, say, a 7 year-old, who learned how to poop around the same time he learned how to say the word, which coincidentally was probably around the same time the movie idea was conceived. The plot is a farcical look at a supposed CIA plot to kill North Korea's leader, and the individuals hired to do the job are the goofballs who like to say the word poop, and likely say other nasty things throughout the movie centered around the male sexual organ. I haven't seen it, but if past is prologue, I would bet someone's paycheck that someone says, "That's what she said," in the film. And if they don't say it, they will imply it. So, the movie makes fun of Americans, makes the CIA look like idiots, and its lead characters are fools. I wouldn't call it Hollywood's best effort, but there are a lot of 7 to 19 year-olds who will giggle at every "p" and "b" word while their 23 to 36 year-old parents sitting next to them tell them to be quiet so they can enjoy the show. I doubt I will watch it, not because it has been in every news report for days — most people now know it is available for streaming — but because as each trailer plays before me, I am more and more convinced it was not made with me in mind. But I wouldn't be worried about Kim Jong-Un. It isn't the first time Hollywood has made fun of a ruthless dictator, is it? There was the 1940 Three Stooges Film, You Nazty Spy, in which Moe Howard was apparently spoofing Adolf Hitler, the maniacal then-dictator of Germany. Other actors played leaders in Hitler's organization, which was based in the fictional country of Moronica. Following that movie, over the next five years, millions of European civilians were killed by Nazi Germany, the majority of them Jews, as well as 25 million Russians, but it doesn't mean one caused the other. Or does it? What dictators around the world know is that freedom of speech and expression is their enemy, but in America, satire is one of the most protected forms of speech, whether it is good satire or bad satire. People can make bad movies in America, and the French can laugh at the decline of our civilization. American young people can spend their parents' money on whatever ridiculous thing comes next, whether is is a bad movie or a song with dirty lyrics, and the Russians can stick their noses up in the air over their cultural longevity. And American writers can dig down deep into the recesses of their education and experience to find the most succinct word to describe perfectly, something as ridiculous as a Seth Rogan movie and the infantile reaction to it by a ruthless dictator. Poop! |
