HOPKINTON: The Last Thirty-Five Years

December 12, 2014 — In celebrating Hopkinton's upcoming 300th Anniversary, HopNews will feature some of the last 35 years. Above, taken in1985, a short time exposure of the Sudbury River going under the stone bridge of the former Route 85. The photographer drove by the scene every day for about a year after conceiving the photo and saw the light beaming under the bridge and got what he wanted. Readers with photos to share from the last 35 years are welcome to send one for this feature to Editor@HopNews.com . And come to think of it, any old photo from any year will do.

Bustfied!

December 11, 2014 — In a Canada-wide competition, students and music professionals voted Busty and the Bass as the Best University Band in Canada. These McGill University students brought their 9-piece sound to the Rose Garden in Upton, home of trumpet player Mike McCann, Wednesday evening. HopNews captured some video of the band, which undoubtedly will not do justice to the live performance, which was over the top with rare talent, excitement, timing, writing, playing, and superb sound mix that added up to a thrilling and memorable performance. We hope to crunch some of the video by Thursday afternoon. Please check back!

The Massachusetts State Police Puts Pepper-Spray Trooper on Restricted Duty

Has difficulty reaching alleged victim

December 10, 2014 — To date, the individual who posted a video depicting a trooper using pepper spray during a demonstration in Boston last week has not responded to several requests by State Police to contact us. The department attempted to contact the person in the video online in the comment chain under his video, and also sent two Internal Affairs investigators to try to speak to him at his residence as well as at a local gym. Though he was not located, messages and contact information were left at both locations. A message was also left by phone with a relative of the man asking him to contact the State Police regarding the incident.

On Tuesday, the State Police placed the trooper depicted in the video on restricted duty pending completion of a department investigation. The name of the trooper is not being released while the internal investigation is underway.

Again, we are asking the individual who posted the video to contact the Massachusetts State Police so that the investigation of the matter can be thoroughly undertaken. Press Release.

The video, as well as an interview with the individual who shot the video, can be seen on Channel 5's YouTube HERE.  <<<<<------------------- VIDEO

CONGRESSMAN KENNEDY APPOINTED TO HOUSE COMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND COMMERCE

Washington, DC – December 10, 2014 — Recently elected to his second term serving the 4th District of Massachusetts, Congressman Joe Kennedy III today was appointed to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce (“E&C”). The influential E&C Committee has broad legislative jurisdiction over health care, energy policy, telecommunications, and consumer protection. It oversees the Departments of Energy, Health and Human Services, and Commerce, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Trade Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Federal Communications Commission.

“The issues before the House Energy and Commerce Committee drive and define the Massachusetts economy,” said Congressman Kennedy. “Whether it’s improving access to the innovation economy, tackling critical public health priorities like substance abuse, or setting an energy policy that puts consumers and the environment first, the challenges before this Committee directly intersect with the needs of my constituents back home in the 4th District. And as the Committee tackles everything from renewable energy development to health care cost containment, the innovative approaches championed by our Commonwealth will guide my work. I look forward to partnering with Chairman Fred Upton, Ranking Member Frank Pallone and all of my colleagues on the Committee throughout the 114th Congress.”

In his first term, Kennedy served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Congressman Kennedy’s E&C subcommittee assignments will be determined at a later date. For more information about the Committee on Energy and Commerce, please click here.

Busty and the Bass is Coming to Upton!

December 7, 2014 — Mike McCann was about 14 (Choose thumbnail to enlarge) when he first started playing "Taps" on the bugle for Bugles Across America, a program that encouraged localities to remember veterans of the armed forces once a month by gathering and playing taps. Michael, an Upton native, was introduced to the program by his father, also Michael, who was connected to Hopkinton as an IT consultant.

Mike went off to college at McGill University in Montreal in 2011, pursuing his musical interests, which recently paid off big time.

The band he joined at McGill, a jumpin' 9-piece rock-funk-soul band called Busty and the Bass, won a Canada-wide contest as the Best University Band in Canada. Now, for avid HopNews readers, that is old news, because we shared it a few weeks ago, and even presented their biggest hit on video. And so, the real new news is that the 21 year-old from Upton, who honed his chops playing a 24-note military dirge, will bring the other 8 members of his band and light up Upton at The Rose Garden, 16 Milford Street, Upton on Wednesday, December 10 at 8 p.m.

Water Department Advisory

Please be advised that a Fire Hydrant was struck this morning on the Loop road to Hopkins school. The hydrant was separated from the line causing a large volume of water to flow. This has caused discoloration in the system. People may need to let their cold water lines flush to help clear the lines. — Eric Carty, Water Sewer Manager. facebook and Twitter followers were alerted

The Sky's the Limit Now Into Phase II
Community invited to continue raising funds for worthy cause

Above, Madison McDougall jumps for joy at the photographer's request during the gathering for the Sky's the Limit Courtyard update at Hopkinton Middle School Wednesday evening..

December 4, 2014 — The Middle School Library was the setting for an update and presentation on the Sky's the Limit project, the brainchild of former teacher, and current Assistant Hopkinton Middle School Principal Maryellen Grady, who wanted to turn the unused and inaccessible space into something useful and productive.

Phase I of the project, clearing out old trees, a microwave dish and associated fencing, as well as opening up three entrances to the space cost $135,000. Phase II, the final phase of the project, is expected to cost $100,000. It will help create outdoor classrooms as well as performance areas and gathering spaces for students and put to good use a space that is central to the building and which could be central to student life.

This evening the proponents offered a Power Point presentation and a Q&A in a social setting, but the message was clear. The project has been funded in full with private funds, and they would like to keep it that way. There are several ways to help.

Death of Springfield Man at Rest Stop an Apparent Suicide

The death of a man found inside his car at a Bernardston rest stop, with a gunshot wound to the head, is an apparent suicide.

While Massachusetts State Police generally do not identify suicide victims, we are doing so at the request of the Hampden District Attorney and the Springfield Fire Department, who have fielded multiple media inquiries about the victim and related circumstances. The victim is identified as LUIS RODRIGUEZ, 38, of Springfield. He was a member of the Springfield Fire Department and, at the time of his death, was a defendant in an ongoing criminal matter in Hampden County.

At approximately 8:20 a.m. yesterday a motorist pulling into the rest area on Route 91 northbound in Bernardston observed a parked white Infiniti G35 sedan with the engine revving. The witness checked on the sedan’s driver and observed a male who appeared to be lifeless and bleeding from a head wound. Troopers from the State Police Barracks in Shelburne Falls responded, made entry to the vehicle, and determined the victim was deceased. Troopers recovered a handgun from inside the vehicle. The revving engine is believed to have been caused by the victim’s making contact with the gas pedal.

State Police detectives, as well as troopers assigned to the Crime Scene Services Section and the Ballistics Section, responded and processed the scene for evidence. Investigation to this point indicates that the victim died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
