A Letter to Parents Regarding OUI Incident

October 20, 2014

Dear Hopkinton parents,

We have been working with the Hopkinton Police Department as part of an active investigation regarding an incident that occurred on Saturday night. The bus driver responsible for driving our cross-country team was arrested and charged with OUI upon arriving at the high school. The Hopkinton Police Department has reported that the driver had a past record of OUI offenses. Clearly that led to many questions regarding how he was able to obtain a driver’s license and what I plan to do to ensure closer scrutiny by the District of its transportation services.

The driver in question, despite his past OUI offenses, was in a position to be driving a bus for Connolly Bus Company and Hopkinton because he met the state requirements for obtaining a license. This includes annual CORI, SORI (Sex Offender Registry Information) and a driver record check.   I intend to impose stricter criteria at the district level moving forward.

While Hopkinton Public Schools does not license school bus drivers, we will continue to take appropriate action to review the suitability of our drivers.  Under state law, all individuals providing school related transportation to students are subject to criminal record review and finger-printing.  I have notified Michael J.Connolly & Sons Inc., the private contractor that provides the District’s busing services, that we will continue to enforce our rights under law to require finger-print checks on all drivers assigned to the District’s routes and I will personally review all existing CORI reports.

We will continue to cooperate with the Hopkinton Police in their investigation of this matter and will be conducting a full and complete internal investigation as to the actions of school personnel.  I continue to assure you that the focus of the investigation is to ensure the safety of our students and to improve procedures where necessary.

Sincerely,

Cathy MacLeod, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

Support for Carolyn Dykema Reelection

Editor:

I am writing in support of Carolyn Dykema’s reelection to the Massachusetts 8th Middlesex House seat.  Carolyn helped our family through a bureaucratic maze in our quest to escape onerous flood insurance premiums imposed due to incorrect FEMA mapping data.  These insurance payments escalated annually and had become a financial hardship for our household.  Rectifying the incorrect data required a complicated minuet involving local, state, and federal levels of government, a path we were unable to navigate.  At a time when our elected leaders have not always lived up to our standards, Carolyn met and exceeded the standard for constituent service by aiding us through her expertise and cooperation with other branches and levels of government.

Through her efforts and attention to detail, Carolyn earned my vote and I’m sure that she will earn yours.

Hunting Season Information Compliments of the Hopkinton Trails Club

Hopkinton has a wealth of beautiful open spaces and the Trails Club encourages everyone to get out and use them. When we go, we always take precautions to ensure our hikes are safe and enjoyable. We bring maps and water, wear appropriate clothes and footwear, and there's always at least one first aid kit in someone's pack.

Autumn is a particularly wonderful time to be out in the woods. The air is cool and the color of the changing leaves can be spectacular. Extra caution is needed at this time of year however. This is deer hunting season and many of the areas we love to explore in Hopkinton are open for hunting

There are three hunting seasons for deer in Massachusetts. The 2014 dates are:
Bow & Arrow: October 20 thru November 29
Shotgun: December 1 thru December 13
Muzzle-loaders: December 15 thru December 31

You can still enjoy the woods during this time if you use common sense and take a few precautions:

Be aware of which areas are open for hunting and when (no hunting on Sundays!)
Wear blaze orange clothing (at least a hat)
Avoid hikes during prime hunting times (dawn & dusk)

For more information about hunting seasons and safety in the woods, visit the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife (Mass Wildlife) webpage.

Irish Step Dancers

To Perform Sunday on

Hopkinton Common

As many of you know, Ailene Barry, Cate Barry, Deirdre Belger, Erin Belger, Camryn Franks, Jessie Franks, Maggie Franks, Ashleigh Pepin, and Maura Souza  started Irish Step Dancing  years ago. Recently, they were selected by their teacher at McInerney School of Irish Step to compete on a team representing McInerney in the 2014 "Oireachtas" or New England Region Irish Step Dance Competition.  The girls have worked very hard with their team for several weeks already, practicing every Friday night and Saturday morning since late August!

This year, there are 8 girls from Hopkinton competing in the New England Region "Oireachtas" Competition.  In order to fundraise to defray the costs of competing, the girls will be performing Irish Step Dance at this weekends Farmer's Market on the Hopkinton Town Common. There will be 2 performances on Sunday: 1:30 PM and 4:15 PM. Please stop by girls tent any time between 1 - 5 PM as well!

Hopkinton Drug Flu Clinic

October 16, 2014 — Hopkinton Drug conducted a flu clinic today for Town Employees, beginning at the Fire Station at 7:00 am and ending up at the Town Hall at 1:00 pm. Director of Marketing for Hopkinton Drug, Michael Macione said that the employees' insurance covered the cost, and that holding the clinic saved the Town of Hopkinton money that the Board of Health would have spent on serum.

Above, Jamie Hellen, Operations Assistant to the Town Manager, gets an alcohol wipe from pharmacist Vera Parker, who administered the injection.

Bridge Over the River Blackstone

October 16, 2014 — The Roving HopCam made the foliage scene in the Blackstone Valley last weekend and came up with this photo of a keystone arch bridge over the Blackstone River, where the defunct Blackstone Canal once operated. After only about 25 years in operation from Worcester to Providence, the canal was made obsolete by the construction  of railroads.
