Demons Hockey Gives Up Hopkinton Hockey Rink Pursuit
"...Financially not as viable as it was three years ago." Roy MacDowell

September 8, 2014 — Roy MacDowell of Legacy Farms informed the Planning Board this evening that the Demons Hockey organization has withdrawn interest in building a hockey rink on 19 acres of land dedicated to sports for the town from the Legacy Farms agreement with the Town of Hopkinton. The Demons organization was the only entity that answered a Request for Proposals that coincidentally had been tailor-made for their purposes. Mr. MacDowell said he believed that funding was difficult, and that three other rinks were built in the area in the intervening three years since they first showed interest. Planning Board Chairman Ken Weismantel said he would take Mr. MacDowell's word as an official "no".

Mr. MacDowell's obligation before turning the land over to the town is to rough grade the land, stated Mr. Weismantel.

But Mr. MacDowell asked if the town would consider turf fields on that land, saying that if so, he would grade it to suit, and not cover the land with loam, which would need to be ripped up in the aforementioned event, creating more work for the town.

On another note, Mr. MacDowell stated the East Main Street roadway work, which includes the shaving down of the roadway corner, and as a result, creating the need to bury the water lines more deeply, would be completed by November 15.

He also put a five-week maximum completion time for the sidewalk planned down East Main Street to Legacy Farms.

"The gas company told us they need to run a 12" gas main from Wilson Street to East Main Street, about 8,000 feet. Literally, it parallels the edge of Legacy Farms Road North. If they don't do that they are going to run  out of gas this Winter."

Mr. MacDowell also discussed the entryway to the 19-acre area, the dialogue of which can be seen in the video of excerpts, below:

The heron is a successful fisher, as it can stand in shallow water, its legs disguised as small branches. Above, the bird's legs can barely be differentiated from the surrounding dead branches of the fallen tree upon which it stands.

HOPKINTON FIRE STATION OPEN HOUSE

The Hopkinton Fire Department will open their station to the public on October 5th for their Annual Open House. The event at Fire Headquarters will be from 11am to 2pm. Residents and children will have the opportunity to view demonstrations, learn about fire safety, and tour the station. Refreshments will be provided and Sparky the dog is expected to make an appearance.

The Open House provides an opportunity for firefighters to focus on the educational theme of Fire Prevention week. This year’s theme is “Help us sound the alarm that working smoke alarms save lives”. Did you know that many people don’t test their smoke alarms as often as they should? When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. You need working smoke alarms to give you time to get out. Test yours every month! ~HFD Selfie
