Progress at West Main and School Streets

NSTAR's crews were on site today conducting some of the necessary work which will bring the construction at the intersection of School and West Main Streets closer to completion. NSTAR's crews estimate that it will take them 8-10 days to relocate all their wires from the old poles to the new poles. Comcast and Verizon can relocate their wires once NSTAR's work is complete. The final step will be for the Town's contractor to widen the pavement and restripe the lines.

Greyhound Friends Dog Days of August Fundraiser

Hopkinton, MA- August 5, 2014 — Greyhounds Friends is holding their Dogs Days of August fundraising challenge this month in an effort to offset their $1,500 a day operational costs. These include the kennel mortgage, utilities, staffing, vet care and medication, dog food, supplies and expenses for publicity and special events (which help increase adoptions and welfare/awareness).

A different dog will be featured on their website each day in August and the public is asked to make a tax-deductible donation in any amount to help support their work. As a special bonus, a small group of generous donors are matching Dogs Days of August gifts so donations can bring double the value to Greyhound Friends.

Donations can be made online through www.greyhound.org  or checks can be mailed to Greyhound Friends, 167 Saddle Hill Road, Hopkinton, MA 01748. Greyhound Friends is able to continue its adoption and advocacy work only by relying on the continued support of our many donors. Thank you in advance from Greyhound Friends (and the pups!).

Unseen creatures make noises ~ a true story

 by Robert Falcione

(Reprinted today, August 2, 2014) August 26, 2007 — Hopkinton State Park offers some great trails with hills and slopes for power hiking, open every day for the adult who needs to burn off a daily dose of ice cream and fresh, really fresh native corn on the cob, thick with butter, like honey clinging to a fritter.

But people need variety, so on this day I headed to Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton.
Check out the page for a trail map and directions to the park. Regular folks, spelunkers, and technical climbers use the park to their own ends, even if it means just being in awe of the geological event that must have caused it, that split the earth apart for 1300 feet; or looking down from the heights from which your life is literally in your own hands. One false move, one misstep, has taken more than one person to the rocks below with no second chance. "Know where your feet are," the Park Ranger will tell a number of people each season.
But this evening, I decided to walk the most recently acquired area on the southern part of the parcel instead, on trails that lead to two reservoirs high on a hill and surrounded by woods teeming with wildlife and history. Purgatory Chasm just didn't seem like enough of a challenge for the amount of exercise I wanted on this evening, and the Park had recently doubled their available land with this latest acquisition.
I parked the car in a designated, but remote area and entered the forest through a dark canopy, seeing foot trails that I had never seen before, but staying on the main trail. I hadn't been there for about four years.

The sun was hidden from my view and the darkened trail provided an instant spookiness that causes a lone human to be wary and on alert with a heightened sensitivity. After all, I had heard of bear sightings in this park four years ago, but never wanted to actually see one myself. If I did, I remember someone saying to roll up in a fetal position - or was I supposed to run? Hope I don't have to find out.

Fresh human shoeprints on the sandy part of the trail. Someone else is in the woods. Hiker, runner, dog walker, Wiccan?
Hmm, berries all over the ground. I wonder what animal might be around to eat them.
Ah yes, uphill it is, past the area where the deer apparently visit, judging from the scat lying on the spongy earth. I wondered if I would see any signs of pagan worship or practice, like Cathy and I did at the Douglas State Forest. In fact, we found ourselves in the middle of a stone circle that we hadn't noticed when we crossed its circumference. Another time we ran into a pentacle made of trees on the ground in the woods.

Promoting Open Space

Editor:

During Hopkinton’s Selectmen’s meeting on Tuesday, 15 July, Tim Kilduff, Chair of Hopkinton’s Visioning Steering Group, delivered a status review of their work to date.  At the conclusion of his presentation he entertained questions from the Selectmen.  Vice Chair John Mosher asked if the VSG had given consideration to open space.  Tim replied, “Critical element.  The preliminary public input that the committee got at the first public input session, [open space] was high on the list.  Protecting that; a lot of people feel it should be expanded.”  (This conversation takes place at ~ minute 24:00 on the cable television tape of the meeting.)

In 2007 Hopkinton carried out a Land Evaluation Study, prepared by Community Opportunities Group, Connery Associates, and a committee formed of 13 Hopkinton citizens.  This study was preliminary, and so was not inclusive of all properties with the town.  The 40-acre property at 203 Pond Street, which connects to both Upton State Forest and Lake Whitehall State Park, was the number one ranked property in that study.

Given the statement made at the above referenced Selectmen’s Meeting, by the Chair of the Visioning Steering Group, and the rank of that piece of property in the referenced study, I fail to understand why the State, as well as Hopkinton and its citizens, are not working aggressively towards acquiring this land as open space.

Sincerely,

Edwin E Harrow
