Mass Joins 14 States in Enforcement

July 31, 2014 — The Massachusetts State Police and the Department of Transportation today announced that Troop E of the State Police will roll numerous extra patrols on the Massachusetts Turnpike from Friday through Monday as part of a multi-state effort to enforce traffic laws and interdict dangerous drivers.

Massachusetts and 14 other states tomorrow will kick off the “I-90/94 Challenge” on Interstates 90 and 94 across the United States. Here, Troop E, which is responsible for patrolling the Turnpike (Route 90) from Boston to the New York line, will conduct enforcement efforts focusing on distracted and impaired driving, excessive speed, seatbelt use, motorcycle violations, and defective equipment on and unsafe driving of large trucks and buses. Troop E will utilize marked, semi-marked, low profile, and unmarked patrol vehicles.

In addition to normal staffing levels, additional troopers will be added to every shift throughout the 96-hour period to conduct saturation patrols throughout the length of the Turnpike. The road patrols will be complemented by patrols run by members of the Troop E Community Action Team and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit.

Throughout the “I-90/94 Challenge” period, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation will run messages promoting safe driving on its electronic message boards along the Turnpike. The DOT and MSP will also promote the effort and safe driving habits on their social media platforms, including Twitter feeds @MassStatePolice and @MassDOT.

“The goal of this targeted effort – and indeed, of all our daily traffic enforcement efforts across the state – is, quite simply, to save lives,” said Colonel Timothy P. Alben, superintendent of the State Police. “We urge motorists to partner with us in this weekend’s Challenge by calling 911 on their cell phones to report distracted, drunk or aggressive drivers or any other unsafe driving behavior.”

“One of MassDOT’s principal goals is to ensure highway safety both by building safer roads and bridges, but also by encouraging safe driving behaviors,” said MassDOT Highway Administrator Frank DePaola. “Through this Challenge, we hope to reinforce the importance of safe driving by directly appealing to the public, asking them to please slow down, buckle up, and be attentive while behind the wheel.”

Interstate 90 runs more than 3,000 miles from Boston to Seattle. Interstate 94 runs for nearly 1,600 miles from Lake Michigan to Billings, Montana, where it connects to I-90. Fifteen states are participating in the challenge. MSP Press Release

Sophie B. Gastel, 89

HOPKINTON - Sophie B. Gastel, 89, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 29th, 2014. A resident of Golden Pond Assisted Living, Sophie came to Hopkinton in 2007 to be near her daughter Joyce Michel, her son-in-law Ruben, and their children Lisie, Essie, and Jesse Michel. She was frequently seen about town with her family, enjoying the Concerts on the Common, the Senior Center, and the local restaurants and shops.

Joyce Michel would like to thank the compassionate staffs of Golden Pond, PNPS home care, and Ascend Hospice, as well as the many friendly residents of Hopkinton whose words and acts of kindness enhanced her mother's later years.

 State Police K9 Assists Haverhill PD Locating Two Suspects in Overnight Stabbing

Last night at approximately 11:30 p.m., Troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Andover and Newbury Barracks, A-Troop Headquarters in Danvers, Crime Scene Services Section, and Trooper Daniel Purtell with his K-9 partner, Neko, responded to assist the Haverhill Police Department in their search for two subjects wanted in connection to a stabbing. Two male subjects were seen running from area of High Street and Temple Street. Trooper Purtell deployed K-9 Neko on a track from nearby blood spatter that had been located by Haverhill officers.

K-9 Neko tracked through the neighborhood to the back door of a house where Trooper Purtell observed additional blood spatter on the back porch and door handle. Trooper Purtell and Neko entered, checked the basement, and located two subjects matching the description of the two that had fled the scene. Both subjects were placed into custody and turned over to the Haverhill Police Department. 

William J. McRobert, 74

HOPKINTON - William J. McRobert, 74, died Monday, July 28, 2014 after a long illness. He was the husband of Mary M. (Kearnan) McRobert, to whom he was married for 50 years. Born in Natick, he was the son of the late Philip and Esther (Hoey) McRobert.

He was a 1958 graduate of Hopkinton High School and served in the U.S. Air Force. In 1964 he became an officer for the Hopkinton Police Department and he remained there, retiring as Chief in January 1999.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Cynthia Correia of Hopkinton and his son Jeffrey McRobert and wife Rachael of Woodstock, GA. He also leaves five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition, he leaves his sisters Gail Belmore of Milford, Judith McCommis of Bellingham and Janet MacKay of Hopkinton; and his brother Philip McRobert and his wife Donna of Hopkinton.

The funeral will be held Friday, August 1, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. from the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church Street. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church at 11:00 a.m. Burial with military honors will take place at St. John's Cemetery immediately following the Mass. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday, July 31, 2014 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Fourth Year Milford Regional Named a Best Regional Hospital

Milford Regional Medical Center has been recognized for the fourth consecutive year in U.S. News & World Report’s 2014-2015 Best Hospitals’ rankings as one of the region’s top performing hospitals in the Worcester Metropolitan area. The Medical Center was also named one of four top-ranked hospitals out of 30 in central and western Massachusetts and ranked 15 out of 116 hospitals statewide.
 
The latest rankings showcase hospitals across the country. Covering 94 metro areas in the U.S., the regional hospital rankings complement the national rankings by including hospitals with solid performance nearly at the level of nationally ranked institutions. Hard numbers stand behind the rankings in most specialties- death rates, patient safety, procedure volume, and other objective data. Responses to a national survey, in which physicians were asked to name hospitals they consider best in their specialty for the toughest cases, also were factored in.
Milford Regional was ranked high performing in geriatrics and pulmonology and scored high in patient safety, demonstrating commitment to reducing accidents and medical mistakes. The Medical Center also exceeded the state and national average in patient satisfaction surveys achieving high “overall” and “willingness to recommend” ratings.
