July 15, 2014 — Work continues
on the expansion of the Hopkinton Center for the
Arts as the rusting, iconic silo of the former Terry
Farm stands sentinel over people working inside the
new foundation. The silo awaits a rescue and move to
another location, and absent that scenario, it will
be demolished once the delay imposed by the
Historical Commission expires.

National Professional of the Year Safety and
Security Award Race director of the
B.A.A. Boston Marathon receives award in
Indianapolis
BOSTON
(July 15, 2014) – The National Center for Spectator
Sports Safety and Security has presented its
Professional of the Year Award for national marathon
endurance events to Dave McGillivray, the race
director of the B.A.A. Boston Marathon and the
upcoming TD Beach to Beacon 10K and New Balance
Falmouth Road Race.
McGillivray accepted the award recently at the
organization’s annual security conference in
Indianapolis. Established in 2006, The National
Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security
(NCS4) at The University of Southern Mississippi is
a world leader in addressing potential threats and
risks to the safety and security of sporting events.
“The reason for the Professional of the Year Award
is to allow professional leagues, NCAA member
institutions and marathon and endurance
organizations to honor outstanding individuals in
the field of sports safety and security for their
contributions and leadership,” said NCS4 Director
Dr. Lou Marciani. “These contributions involve
enhancing safety and security at their venue beyond
what is normally required, and setting an example

Today
at 3:18 p.m. troopers from the State Police Barracks in
Leominster responded to reports of a single car rollover
crash on I 495 northbound, 1 mile prior to Exit
25A/Route I 290 in Marlboro. Members of the Marlboro
Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services also
responded to the scene.
The vehicle, a Ford pickup truck, was occupied by one
male operator. The operator was determined deceased on
the scene. The two left lanes of I 495 northbound
became closed to traffic as a result of this crash. The
traffic back up was estimated at be 3 or 4 miles.
The circumstances surrounding the cause of this crash
remain under investigation. The
investigation is being conducted by troopers from the
Leominster Barracks with assistance from troopers
assigned to the State Police Collision Analysis and
Reconstruction Team (C.A.R.S.) and the State Police
Crime Scene Services Section (C.S.S.S.). Members of the
Massachusetts Department of Transportation responded to
the scene to assist with redirecting traffic around the
crash location.
The identification of the deceased operator is being
withheld pending the notification to next of kin.
No other vehicles were involved in this crash. ~ MSP

911 caller reported that her 31 year-old daughter
was intoxicated and on medication when she jumped
out of a vehicle and ran into the woods on
West Main Street. Two officers responded and advised
that the Upton Police Department located the
individual.

911 caller from Hayden Rowe Street reported that
several teens may have tried to break into the dog
house and were harassing an employee. Officer Aaron
O'Neil responded and spoke with the reporting party.

Pinecrest Village resident reported that she was
just almost run over by her neighbor. Officer
Matthew McNeil responded and spoke with both
individuals.

911 caller reported a motor vehicle accident without
personal injury on Main Street. Two officers

furniture were in the roadway on North Mill Street.

caller reported that motor vehicles were parked in a
handicapped spot and were blocking a fire hydrant on

advised that the vehicles were gone upon his
arrival.

standing beside it on the side of the road on Hayden
Rowe Street. Officer Patrick O'Brien checked the
area and stated only seeing one deer in the field.

landscaper on Cedar Street reported finding an

finding a foyer door unlocked but all interior doors
secured.

finding two people in a motor vehicle who appeared

caller reported that a vehicle was parked in the
roadway on Downey Street causing a road hazard.
Officer William Burchard located the owner and had

caller reported that a motor vehicle struck his
vehicle on Downey Street and then left the scene
heading towards West Main Street. Officer William
Burchard responded and located the vehicle parked in
the driveway of the owner's residence. The operator
returned to the scene and was issued a criminal
application for leaving the scene of property damage
in a motor vehicle accident.

was a report of tree brush in the roadway on Wood
Street. Officer Stephen Buckley responded and stated
that there was no hazard.

Food Foraging with Russ Cohen
July 31, 6PM at Stefans Farm on Mechanic Street in
Upton
The Upton Open Space Committee
and The Friends of Upton State Forest are
co-sponsoring Russ Cohen for his return visit to
Upton.
Russ Cohen, author of the foraging guide Plants I
Have Known…and Eaten is a professional
environmentalist and wild foods enthusiast who is
passionate about sharing his interest in wild foods.
For over 40 years he has been leading walks to
introduce participants to edibles in the outdoor
environment.
Russ received his bachelor's degree in land use
planning from Vassar College in 1978, and received a
masters in Natural Resources and a law degree from
Ohio State University in 1982. He has been employed
by the Riverways Program (now part of the Division
of Ecological Restoration) of the Mass. Department
of Fish and Game since 1988, and has served as its
Rivers Advocate since 1992.
Russ grew up in Weston where he spent much of his
free time in the woods, cultivating a strong
spiritual connection to nature. His first formal
exposure to edible wild plants occurred in an
“edible Botany" mini-course offered by his high
school biology department. He learned about two
dozen edible species that grew around the high
school grounds, and the class had a big "feed" at
the end of the course. Russ got turned on to the
subject, went to the local library and took out
every book he could find on the topic, taught
himself over fifty more species, and, in his senior
year of high school (1974), he taught the Edible
Botany class he had taken as a sophomore.
Russ has led walks for over two dozen different
organizations, including the Massachusetts Audubon
Society, the New England Wild Flower Society, The
Trustees of Reservations and the Ecological
Landscaping Association. These foraging programs
were held at various outdoor locations throughout
New England, ranging from two-hour evening walks in
the city and suburbs to lengthier explorations in
the mountains and along the seacoast. During the
"off-season", Russ writes articles on foraging and
gives slide presentations featuring many of his
favorite edible wild plants and mushrooms found in
New England. Russ’ foraging book, Wild Plants I Have
Known…and Eaten, came out in June of 2004, and is
now in its fifth printing. More information can be

The program takes place on Thursday, July 31st at
Stefans Farm on Mechanic Street in Upton Meet at the
Upton Community Garden parking lot (near the power
lines). Sign in at 5:45PM, walk begins at 6PM. There

against ticks. Bug repellant is recommended. The

JMALDEN
- uly 14, 2014 — Massachusetts State Police, with
the assistance of officers from other
agencies, today arrested a Stoneham man who is
suspected of making threats related to court
proceedings in Malden District Court. The suspect,
MARK MULDOWNEY, 50, was pulled over after he left a
court appearance on an unrelated case in the Malden
courthouse this morning.
Police began an investigation last week after an
MBTA passenger observed a drawing with writing on it
left behind in a train car. The drawing and
writing indicated the threat of a crime occurring at
Malden District Court. The material also
indicated today’s date — July 14 — but did not have
a name associated with it.
The State Police sent numerous troopers, both
uniformed and in plainclothes, to the courthouse
this morning for added security. They were
joined in the security effort by Malden Police
officers, members of the Middlesex Sheriff’s
Department, and other local officers. At one point
in the morning, based on intelligence developed with
the assistance of Wakefield Police, the attention of
troopers and officers was drawn to MULDOWNEY, who
had a court appearance on an unrelated case.
After MULDOWNEY’s case was called and his hearing
ended, he left the courtroom. Troopers
attempted to speak to him outside the courthouse but
he proceed directly to his car, a 2000 Honda Civic,
and drove off. Trooper Danab Shea of the Troop A
Community Action Team , who by that time had learned
that the registration on the Civic previously had
been revoked, stopped the car on Summer Street in
Malden. In the car, Trooper Shea observed a drawing
with text similar to that which previously had been
observed on the train by the passenger. The exact
content of the drawings and writing is not being
released at this time as the investigation is
ongoing.
MULDOWNEY was brought to the Medford Barracks, where
he was booked for threatening to commit a crime.
Additional charges are being determined. The
investigation by State Police and the Middlesex
District Attorney’s Office is ongoing. No further
information is being released at this time.

grabs a small, dead branch of a blueberry bush on
the shore of Lake Whitehall to rest from its usual
non-stop eating and mating. The creature has two
eyes with 30,000 lenses each. It left its perch and
circled the photographer, and then returned to his
branch to continue chewing its last catch and pose
for the photo.

caller reported seeing the storm door and
front door wide open to an unoccupied house
on Fruit Street. Officer Aaron O'Neil
advised that it was an oversight and he was

Fire Department advised that a walk-in
reported a low hanging branch, possibly
touching the main electrical wire, on Price
Street. Officer William Burchard confirmed
that a large dead tree limb was hanging from
the primary wire and notified the electrical
company.

type of dispute with a neighbor. There was a
language barrier so it was difficult to
understand what was going on. Officer Gregg
DeBoer spoke with all involved and advised
that Assault and Battery charges were going
to be filed against a suspect. The suspect
was also advised that harassment or witness
intimidation would result in more charges.

are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Tim
Kearnan as Principal of Hopkins Elementary School.
Mr. Kearnan has already proven himself an excellent
school leader in his role as Assistant Principal at the
school and he is dedicated to continuing the work taking
place to advance the academic, social-emotional and
community mission.
Mr. Kearnan has enjoyed many
different roles in Hopkinton. He worked for two years as
a Technology Integration Specialist at Elmwood
Elementary School, then transitioned to the classroom
where he taught second grade for nine years.
During that time he also served as president of the
Hopkinton Teachers’ Association. He has served for
the past two years as Assistant Principal in the
district.
Mr. Kearnan earned a B.A. in
Elementary Education from Stonehill College, and a M.Ed.
from Fitchburg State College. He has completed
additional Graduate Administrative coursework at
Worcester State College.
Mr. Kearnan is eager to begin
and will be holding a Public Forum on Monday, July 14th
at 6:00 PM at the Hopkins School cafeteria to give the
community the opportunity to meet with him.
Additional opportunities to meet Mr. Kearnan will be
provided throughout the summer and will be announced
through the school’s listserv. Among his first
tasks will be to conduct a search for an Assistant
Principal.
We are looking forward to a
seamless leadership transition at the Hopkins Elementary
School.
