Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, I am writing to express
extreme disappointment and sadness about the
appointments made to the Hopkinton Historic District
Commission. I feel that the Board of Selectmen ignored
the value and service of Michael Girardi and Austin
Spang. As a 30- year resident of the Historic District,
I take seriously the regulations that maintain the
history and character of the area. Mr. Girardi and Mr.
Spang do also. They have worked hard and advocated for
the best interests of the community. I am proud of the
appearance of Hopkinton's District under Mr. Girardi's
leadership. I have found that the HDC works through
problems in a very timely manner and strives to come to
a mutually acceptable compromise to any issues that have
arisen. When the time for reappointments came, the Selectmen played political hardball and unjustly denied their public appointments. Years of public service were terminated over a single issue: library expansion. I cringe when I think of our students who are taught to be civic minded and to volunteer. The lesson here for our children is that compromise, collaboration, and democratic procedure can be disregarded. The tradition of New England small town meeting democracy is being extinguished. I urge other town boards and citizens to voice their outrage at this injustice. Katie Roughan 6 Hayden Rowe Street July 1, 2014 |

From
the Radical Middle
Grenades, Mines, Guns — and "Sharp, Pointy Things" —
are Prohibited Items for Carry-on
June 29, 2014 — The TSA
[Transportation Security Administration] has among
the list of prohibited items that airplane
travellers need to be reminded to leave at home are
guns, knives, stun guns disguised as cell phones,
and grenades and mines, even if they are inert. And
who among us has not forgotten to remove the razor
blade that we all carry in our baseball caps.
Yes, someone forgot. Others forgot to leave Another banned item is the innovative and always useful knuckle stunner. It appears to have a dual purpose; brass-type knuckles for delivering a bone-crushing blow to the face of whatever evil person you are protecting yourself against, as well as a multi-thousand volt discharge to stun the offender; or in the case of a criminal using it, the helpless and innocent victim. The TSA officers have also found replica firearms, pellet guns, bb guns, airsoft guns, live ammunition, as well as a lot of "sharp, pointy things" in the carry on luggage of the people travelling among those it is charged to protect. In its advisory, the TSA cautions against saying things like, "I have explosives in my pocket. We all have bombs," and, "I have cyanide in my wallet." An individual actually did say all of those things, one after another. Those statements were proven to be untrue, after the passenger was asked to speak with a law enforcement official who did not share the same sense of humor with the man. And why is it always a man? Another apparent comedian told the agent at the ticket counter that he had a bomb in his bag. These types of warnings or jokes are not only discouraged, they are prohibited. As one blogger responded, the TSA should have listed the penalties for such wanton behavior. Just saying anything about a bomb, even an unsolicited, self-conscious and paranoid denial such as, "I don't have a belt-bomb strapped to my waist, or even around my chest!" will likely get the individual (likely a man) a second look from security agents and a visit from PSYOPS. So remember — or write it down if you need to — contrary to the childhood adage paraphrased here, it isn't just sticks and stones that can cause delays, words can hurt, too.
Editor's Note: The TSA blog post in its entirety can be accessed here. Or visit the TSA website here. |

attempted to separate the dog and sustained a wound
to his arm. Investigation indicates that the Pit
Bull's owner had been unable to control his dog once
it attacked because the man was on Rollerblades. By the time troopers arrived on
scene, Quincy EMS was treating the Ludlow man for
his injury, and the Quincy man had the Pit Bull
under control. State Police requested that Boston
Animal Control respond, which it did. Boston Animal
Control transported the Pit Bull to Quincy Animal
Control, where the dog will be held for an
observation period. According to the troopers’
investigation, the Pit Bull was not tagged at the
time of the incident and its owner made statements
acknowledging that the dog was not registered with
the city of Quincy. All appropriate civil violations
will be enforced by Quincy Animal Control and the
Animal Rescue League of Boston. The Massachusetts State Police remind all dog owners to ensure that they are capable of controlling their animals in the case that they become aggressive. Owners should not put themselves in a position in which they cannot subdue their own dog should it attack another person or animal. |
