students plan June 22
pancake breakfast Hopkinton High
School drama students are planning a pancake breakfast at
Applebee’s in Milford to raise money for their summer, 2015 trip
to the Fringe Festival in Scotland, where they will perform an
original play for thousands of visitors. The fundraising
breakfast takes place at the Applebee’s at 91 Medway Road (Rte.
109, near the Rte. 495 interchange) in Milford on Sunday, June
22 from 8 to 10 a.m. Tickets are $10 and half will go to the
students. Close to three dozen
students hope to travel to the prestigious festival next summer,
and have committed to raise money to help offset the cost. Their
goal is to raise $34,000. They are also planning raffles of
Hopkinton jackets and other items, a fundraising night at Panera
Bread in Milford, and many other events. More details will be
forthcoming. Tickets for the pancake breakfast will be available in advance from Cathy McCrorey at mccrorey@comcast.net , from drama students who hope to attend the Fringe Festival, or at the door on June 22. |

Record Breaking Photo of Relay Team members left to right; Taylor Velazquez, Isabelle Giordano, Lauren Hazzard, Shelby Aarden and Melissa Lodge June 16, 2014 — Two relay teams from the Girls' Hopkinton High School Track Team traveled to Greensboro, NC to compete in the 2014 New Balance Outdoor Track National Championship Meet. The Emerging Elite 4x800m team (Junior Shelby Aarden, Freshman Isabelle Giordano, Senior Melissa Lodge and Junior Lauren Hazzard) came in 3rd with a 9:28.58 finish, capturing a bronze medal. The Emerging Elite Distance Medley team (Junior Lauren Hazzard, Freshman Taylor Velazquez, Senior Melissa Lodge, Junior Shelby Aarden) came in third with a school record breaking time of 12:10.38, gaining another bronze medal and ranking this Distance Medley Relay team #1 in Massachusetts.
Also competing in Nationals was Senior Jessica Scott. Scott, the State Champion in the 100m, competed against the best in the country in the Championship 100m Dash and in the Championship Long Jump.

June 13, 2014 — The sun shone brightly on Fay's 57 ninth graders as faculty, staff, family, and friends gathered to celebrate the School’s 148th Commencement Exercises on June 7. Tyler Bui of Hopkinton (photo) was among the graduates and she plans on attended Worcester Academy in the fall.
Other Hopkinton residents that were honored during end of the year events included Ethan Student (grade 8) and Joshua Fang (grade 7). Ethan received the Annie Leavitt Memorial Award for his achievements in science, and Joshua was recognized for being the Top Scholar in his grade. |

School Committee to Hold Forum
on Common Core
Tuesday June 17, 2014 in the Middle School Library at 7PM  Photo by Muriel Kramer by Muriel Kramer June 13, 2014 — The School Committee met last night and re-organized following the election. Jon Graziano will serve as Chairman and Ellen Scordino as Vice-Chairman; two new members, Kelly Knight and Lori Nickerson, joined the Committee. Dr. Cathy MacLeod, Superintendent of Schools, congratulated the recent graduates and commented on how impressed she was with graduation, specifically “how smoothly it went and how special it felt.” Three members of the senior class were on hand to present the gifts to the school from the class of 2014; they have donated $5,000 of the necessary $10,000 to commission a complimentary mural for the field house wall facing the one already in place. The mural in place uses pictures of students from 13.1 years in Hopkinton schools (grades pre-k to 12) to depict the men’s start in 2001; the new mural will use pictures from 13.1 years to depict the woman’s start in 2015. This year’s graduating seniors were the youngest students in the first mural and will be the oldest in this one, marking 26.2 consecutive years of student whose pictures will be used to create the murals. The class also donated $2,000 to the Jazmin Fund, a fund established to help defray medical expenses for a former classmate.
Finance Director Ralph Dumas introduced a new initiative for a before and after school program that will be offered for students at Center School and Hopkins School to be held at Hopkins. In response to a Request for Proposal (RFP) three companies submitted proposals that were considered, and the school department has recommended that Springboard Education of Lexington, MA be awarded a one year contract to provide before and afterschool care options for up to 75 students in the coming year. According to Dumas, Springboard Education offered the program that best aligned to Hopkinton’s educational goals, lower tuition and also the highest rental fee; the School Committee voted unanimously to award the contract to Springboard Education. Parents of children in Center and Hopkins can expect to hear more as the company kicks off its marketing program to attract students.
Dumas also provided an update on the progress of the Elementary School Building Committee (ESBC). The owner’s project manager (OPM) review team made up of Mike Shepard, John Weaver, Ralph Dumas, Cathy MacLeod and Dave Daltorio received 15 proposals and has selected five finalist firms to be considered. Interviews will be held at Town Hall in the mornings of June 23rd and 24th. The ESBC hopes to vote on a firm to serve as OPM at their meeting June 26th; their selection will then be forwarded to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) for their review and approval.
In response to growing concerns within the community to the new Massachusetts State Frameworks for education, the Common Core; the school department will hold a forum for parents Tuesday June 17, 2014 in the MS Library at 7PM. Local cable will tape the forum, so interested parents that may be unable to attend can benefit from the presentation. Also next week will be public forums on the new strategic plan initiative; interested residents are invited to attend Tuesday June 17 at 12:30 to 2 PM in the Fire Station Training room or Thursday June 19 at 6:30 to 7:30 PM in the MS Library.
The Draft Strategic Plan focuses on five theories of action – effective school leadership, aligned curriculum, effective instruction, student assessment and leadership/governance/communication. Within those categories the team has identified strategic objectives, and the work over the summer will include defining specific action steps and responsibilities. The Mission statement will stay the same, To Learn, Create and Achieve Together. The vision statement has been reworked and includes a commitment to “continuous learning, growth as individuals and global citizens as well as providing a safe and respectful environment for critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication.” The School Committee will be considering their vote in support of this new Strategic Plan focus after next week’s public forums and resultant community feedback. |

2014 Chopin Symposium:
Weekend of Recitals, Lectures, and
More in Weston, MA
On June 27-29, The
Rivers School Conservatory hosts
the Chopin Symposium – a weekend of recitals, lectures, master
classes, and round-table discussions focusing on the life and
art of Polish composer Frederic Chopin. In its sixth year, the
Symposium will also explore other composers from Chopin’s time
and the cultural and artistic life of 19th-century Europe.
Inaugurating this year’s symposium on Friday, June 27th at 7:30
pm is the Boston debut of acclaimed Russian pianist Pavel
Nersessian, professor at the Moscow Conservatory.
A second concert scheduled for the evening of Saturday, June 28,
features pianists Andrew Tyson, Ya-Fei Chuang, and Gila
Goldstein. Three students from The Chopin Institute, a week-long
course for advanced pianists held at The Rivers School
Conservatory, will also perform on the program.
The closing concert on Sunday, June 29, is a reenactment of a
performance held at Chopin’s own salon in Paris. Performers
include soprano Barbara Quintiliani, cellist Mickey Katz, and
pianists Gila Goldstein and Roberto Poli.
The weekend includes a series of insightful lectures and
discussions with speakers David Dubal, Mike Lee, A. Ramon
Rivera, and David Kasunic.

June 11, 2014 — In order to make way for parking for the 38-42 Main Street building Greg and Kathy Mazur are going to build, they acquired the property at 7 Walcott Street, which included an existing home that the Mazurs planned to demolish. The Historical Commission invoked a 6-month delay on the demolition because the home is over 75 years old, and the commission apparently decided there was some intrinsic value in it. The delay expired a couple of months ago, and demolition of the structure was completed today; some of it is still in dumpsters on the property. Mouse over the image to see what it looks like now. Celebrating & Supporting Fathers – a
Longtime YMCA Tradition
FRAMINGHAM, MA- More than a century
ago, Sonora Louis Smart Dodd aspired to create a holiday to
honor fathers. Dodd, the daughter of a single father and Civil
War veteran, was inspired by a Mother’s Day sermon and wondered
why there was no holiday for fathers. After securing support
from ministers in Spokane, Washington, her idea came to fruition
with the first Father's Day celebration at the Spokane YMCA on
June 19, 1910.
On Sunday, June 15th, the
MetroWest YMCA joins the nation in celebrating Father’s Day and
recognizing the impact fathers and adult male role models make
in children’s lives. Nationally, one out of three children lives
in a home without their biological father, according to the U.S.
Census Bureau. And, societal factors such as unemployment,
work-life balance or a lack of resources can affect fathers’
ability to seek support in strengthening their parenting skills
and more fully engaging in the lives of their children. A
leading nonprofit in fostering positive youth development, the Y
remains dedicated to providing resources and opportunities for
fathers to further involve themselves in the well-being and
development of their children.
Studies show that children with close
relationships with their fathers and other adult male role
models have more self-confidence and exhibit less depression,
perform better academically and engage in significantly less
drug and alcohol use.

youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the
Y believes that family bonds are a foundation of strong
communities, and we work to help all families to learn, grow and

provide fathers with the support they need to be the best
parents and caregivers they can be.”
In honor of Father’s Day the MetroWest
YMCA invites dads and other adult male role models to go for a
swim, relax and enjoy family time at the Open House Weekend at
both the Y’s Clearbrook Swim Club outdoor pool, located at 120
Parker Road, Framingham and the Y’s Family Outdoor Center at 45
East Street, Hopkinton on Saturday, June 14th and
Sunday, June 15th from
12-5pm.
The MetroWest YMCA is also offering a
variety of programs that foster understanding and companionship
between children and their caregivers such as Family Camp on
July 12th, and Geo Caching 101 on July 19th located
at the Y’s Family Outdoor Center in Hopkinton, and Family Open
Swim and Gym times, Family Fun Fitness classes, parent/child
gymnastics, and more at the Y’s Framingham branch, 280 Old

Last
Thursday, the HCA learned that it had been awarded a $450,000
grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Hopkinton
residents Kevin and Sandra Delbridge, longtime financial
supporters of the HCA, also pledged an additional $100,000.
