Dave McGillivray Presented with ‘Enduring Spirit Award’ by Boston Chapter of Back on My Feet
Boston Marathon race director known for overcoming obstacles praised for passionate keynote address

BOSTON (May 28, 2014) – Dave McGillivray, race director of the B.A.A. Boston Marathon and president of DMSE Sports, was given the Enduring Spirit Award by the Back on My Feet organization at the group’s annual breakfast in Boston on May 23.

Back on My Feet (BoMF) is a national organization that uses running to create self-sufficiency in the lives of those experiencing homelessness, helping members obtain independence through employment, job training and housing.

The Friday breakfast was attended by about 400, including both corporate and city leaders.

“No one should be homeless and no one should live in poverty,” McGillivray told the audience. “We all have a responsibility and obligation to help those less fortunate. Running can help raise self-esteem and self-confidence which is the first step for those who are part of the Back on My Feet community in reclaiming their lives.”

McGillivray added, “I’ve always felt there is no such thing as an individual award and as such, accept this kind recognition on behalf of many who have supported me over the years.”

After accepting the Enduring Spirit Award, McGillivray also gave the keynote speech, emphasizing that we all should “set goals, not limits” and that “the worst injustice one could ever do to themselves is to underestimate their own ability.”

“McGillivray’s speech was one of, if not the most moving, powerful, passionate and relevant speeches I have ever heard,” said John Lashar, a founding board member of the Boston Chapter of Back on My Feet. “I feel very fortunate and lucky to have witnessed his heartfelt performance.”

McGillivray, a Medford native now living in North Andover, Mass., gained national prominence with his 1978 cross country run that took 80 days and raised almost $150,000 for the Jimmy Fund – the first money any runner ever raised for a cancer charity, according to Runner’s World. He has completed a number of similar feats of endurance since his groundbreaking cross country trek, including a second cross-country run in 2004 from San Francisco to Boston as part of TREK USA, a relay team event that raised more than $300,000 for five children’s charities. He has now logged more than 150,000 miles, eight Hawaii Ironman Triathlons and now has finished 131 marathons – including this past Boston Marathon.

McGillivray is a pioneer in what is now one of the most important aspects of the endurance sports industry – combining athletics with philanthropy. Nearly every DMSE Sports event combines fitness and fundraising, giving back to the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Children’s Hospital, Lazarus House and many others charities and non-profit organizations in New England and across the country. Since starting DMSE Sports in 1981, he along with all the events he has directed have helped raise $100 million for charity. The firm is now a leader in sports event management, specializing in creating, marketing and producing mass participatory athletic events throughout the U.S. and abroad.

McGillivray learned he had coronary heart disease last fall and has spoken out about getting healthy and going in for heart tests, even if you think you are healthy and in shape. He has lost 27 pounds, dropped his cholesterol level by over 70 points and has been following a very, very strict and healthy diet, which he credits as having given him his health back and now feels he is in his best shape in 15 years.

In addition to the B.A.A. Boston Marathon, DMSE manages more than 25 major road races per year, including the TD Beach to Beacon in Maine, the New Balance Falmouth Road Race on Cape Cod, the Finish at the 50 at Patriot Place, Run for the Dream in Williamsburg, Va., the Bellin Run in Green Bay, Wis., the Feaster Five Thanksgiving Day Road Race and the new Across the Bay 10K in Annapolis, Md., among others.

9:23 pm A 911 caller from Hawthorne Lane reported a domestic disturbance. Two officers spoke with all the parties involved and advised that it was only a verbal argument.

9:14 pm Officer Aaron O'Neil checked and spoke with two different motor vehicle operators on Hayden Rowe Street.

5:34 pm A 911 caller from Tammer Lane reported smoke in their house. Officer Aaron O'Neil responded to assist the Fire Department.

1:41 pm A resident reported that a contractor's van was parked in a bad spot on West Elm Street. Officer Thomas Griffin responded and located the operator who moved his vehicle.

11:00 am Officer Stephen Buckley assisted with a car seat inspection on Main Street.

8:49 am A caller reported that two bags of trash were dumped on the side of Rafferty Road. Officer Thomas Griffin advised that the bags were filled with beer cans and advised the Highway Department to pick them up.

8:25 am A Hayden Rowe Street resident reported that a motor vehicle hit his stone wall and came to rest in his front yard. Two officers responded to assist the Fire Department and advised that the operator refused medical treatment.

7:03 am A motorist reported passing a landscaping truck on Hayden Rowe Street that dropped two scrubby hand-trucks. Officer David Shane responded and checked the area but was unable to locate the hand-trucks.

6:11 am A caller from Huckleberry Road reported seeing a man walking around the neighborhood in full body camouflage and was unsure if he was carrying a firearm. Two officers responded and advised that it was a high school prank that was being played.

Annual Meeting Reminder

The Annual Lake Maspenock Preservation Association meeting and elections will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014at 1:00 P.M. The meeting will take place at the new Sandy Beach Bath house. Please try to attend and be on time for the meeting so that we have adequate numbers to conduct association business. A minimum quorum of 20 members is required. The 2^nd annual LMPA sponsored fishing tournament is also being held that day, with the “weigh-in” for the event taking place at 2:00 P.M. Cooprider Continues Championships

Former Hopkinton High School softball all-star Michelle Cooprider celebrates with her Tufts University teammates after winning the NCAA Division 3 Softball National Championship for the second consecutive year. The team won the championship at the University of Texas at Tyler during the weekend of May 22-26 and finished with a final record of 47-4. Michelle, a junior, plays center field for the Tufts University Jumbos. She hit .320 for the season with 9 doubles, 3 home runs, and 42 runs scored.

The 10^th Annual Respite Center Coffeehouse

On June 6, 2014 the Michael Lisnow Respite Center will be holding their 10^th Annual Coffeehouse live at Faith Community Church in Hopkinton, MA at 7:00 PM. In order to commemorate this anniversary, they will be recording a live CD and DVD. It will be distributed by Worcester’s Birch Beer Records.

Dan Cloutier, one of the Center’s music teachers, was given a grant from the prestigious Club Passim Iguana Fund to make the recording. Dan will be joined by musicians Ricardo Barraza, Kim Jennings, and many Respite Center singers and musicians. They have been practicing together for the past year. Dan says, “Imagine how wonderful it will feel for all of the Respite singers, harmonica players, drummers, and guitar players to have a real pressed CD and DVD of songs they performed. You will be amazed at the level of talent and passion in the group. If you want to experience a night of triumph, this is the night for you.”

The cost of the night is a suggested donation of $10.00 per person or $20.00 per family. All are welcomed to come be part of this special night.

Remy Pleads Guilty To First Degree Murder For Death of Jennifer Martel

WOBURN – May 27, 2014 - Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced today that Jared Remy has pleaded guilty to the first degree murder of his girlfriend Jennifer Martel on August 15, 2013 in Waltham.

Remy, 35, of Waltham, pleaded guilty in Middlesex Superior Court to one indictment charging him with murder in the first degree and another charging him with assault with a dangerous weapon (a knife). The second indictment relates to Remy’s assault of a neighbor who attempted to come to Jennifer Martel’s aid during Remy’s attack on August 15, 2013. Remy also pleaded guilty to indictments charging him with assault and battery and violating a restraining order, for his conduct against Martel on August 13, 2013 in Waltham.

Middlesex Superior Court Judge Kathe Tuttman sentenced the defendant to a term of life in state prison without the possibility of parole on the murder charge, and concurrent sentences of 5-5 years and one day in state prison and 2 1/2 years in the house of correction on the remaining charges. The Court determined that two other charges, of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery, were merged with the substantive murder charge and thus dismissed by the Court.

This plea does not impact the complaints against the defendant in the Cambridge District Court for an alleged incident that occurred in the Cambridge jail while Remy was being held in custody on the murder charge.

“Jared Remy perceived that he was losing control of Jennifer Martel and lashed out at her in a fit of rage, killing her,” District Attorney Ryan said. “Today, with this plea, the defendant has been held accountable for his actions. This plea ensures that Jared Remy will spend the rest of his natural life in prison.”

“Jennifer’s death is a terrible tragedy. The Martel family is in our thoughts and prayers. While nothing can fill the void created by this terrible loss, we hope this resolution of the criminal case will bring Jennifer’s family, and all who knew and loved her, some measure of peace and healing.”

“I am pleased the case has been resolved quickly,” said Waltham Police Chief Keith MacPherson. “I hope this resolution will bring some comfort to the Martel family.”

The prosecutors who handled this case are Assistant District Attorney Lisa McGovern and Assistant District Attorney Michael Kaneb. The Victim Witness Advocate is Danielle DeMeo.

The District Attorney will be issuing an additional statement this afternoon in connection with the independent external review conducted in the aftermath of Jennifer Martel’s murder.

9:28 pm A caller reported fireworks going off in the area of the new Senior Center parking lot. Officer Aaron O'Neil checked the area with a negative find.

9:08 pm The Animal Control Officer was notified about a squirrel that was in a firebox on Parker Point Road.

5:14 pm Officer Linda Higgins spoke with the operator of a motor vehicle on Oliver Lane who was blocking the roadway.

1:28 pm Officer Patrick O'Brien checked and spoke with the operator of a motor vehicle on Grove Street.

2:14 pm A motorist reported that kids were throwing rocks into the roadway on Elm Street.

2:20 pm A 911 caller from Greenwood Road reported that two unwanted individuals were in their house taking items. Two officers responded and advised that it was only a verbal argument.

2:02 pm A Meserve Street property owner reported that a neighbor told him a man was on his property going through the lumber. Officer Patrick O'Brien spoke with an individual who was visiting family across the street and advised that nothing was taken.

12:01 pm A resident of Pond Street reported that a neighbor was running a backhoe doing construction. Officer Stephen Buckley responded and advised that the contractor was moving an excavator that was in someone's way.

11:09 pm Two callers reported possible fireworks in the area of Saddle Hill Road. Two officers responded and spoke with individuals at a residence who stated that it wasn't them.

5:39 pm A Linden Street resident reported smelling smoke and hearing fire alarms sounding. Three officers responded to assist the Fire Department who confirmed that it was a dryer issue.

12:26 pm A caller reported a rabid fox heading down Wilson Street. Officer Stephen Buckley checked the area but could not locate the animal.

11:33 am The Westborough Police Department requested an officer check the gun club on Fruit Street due to multiple noise complaints. Officer Linda Higgins responded and advised that they were using the firing range.

10:50 am Officer Stephen Buckley advised an operator on directions to the State Park.

2:43 am Officer John Moran checked two occupants who were sleeping in the vehicle on Wood Street.

9:41 pm A 911 caller from Coburn Road reported a suspicious motor vehicle parked across the street with what looked like people smoking inside of it. Officer Jacob Campbell responded but the vehicle was gone upon his arrival.

5:15 pm A Hopkins Road resident reported receiving a phone message left by an unknown female requesting help. The caller ID traced the number back to a person in Utah. Sgt. Michael Sutton attempted to call the phone number that was left but no one answered it. The Ogden Utah Police Department was notified, and would do a well being check.

4:07 pm Sgt. Michael Sutton assisted the Fire Department with an interior smoke investigation on Jackson Street.

3:48 pm A caller reported reported witnessing three males walk into the Echo Lake area with fishing poles. Sgt. Michael Sutton checked the area with a negative find.

2:42 pm A motorist reported hitting a red and white hound on the access road to the Fruit Street fields. The dog hit the side of her vehicle then took off running. The Animal Control Officer was notified.

12:17 pm A walk-in reported that two groups of men and women were fist-fighting in a West Main Street gas station parking lot. Two officers checked the area but the group was gone upon their arrival.

12:02 pm The owner of a Main Street residence reported that a vehicle was blocking their driveway. Officer Stephen Buckley responded and issued a parking ticket.

1:23 am Three officers responded to Hayden Rowe Street for a breaking and entering report and subsequently arrested two 15 year-old juveniles and one 14 year-old juvenile and charged them all with Defacing Property (Tagging), Breaking and Entering Nighttime for a Felony, Two counts of Larceny From a Building and Vandalizing Playground Equipment.

12:05 am Sgt. Scott vanRaalten spoke with several high school seniors who were participating in the “senior assassin” game on Hayden Rowe Street.

11:31 am A caller reported that an elderly woman walking on Front Street appeared to be in an altered mental condition. Officer David Shane responded and checked the area with a negative find.

9:54 am Officer Aaron O'Neil advised the cable company of a low hanging wire on Walcott Street.

7:56 am Chief Edward J. Lee assisted a disabled motor vehicle on Grove Street.

7:39 am Officer Patrick O'Brien responded to a two car motor vehicle accident without personal injury on West Main Street.

6:36 am Officer John Moran stopped a motor vehicle on Hayden Rowe Street and subsequently issued two individuals criminal applications for possession of cocaine.

2:10 am Sgt. Scott vanRaalten checked a parked motor vehicle on Saddle Hill Road.

2:05 am Officer John Moran checked a truck that appeared to be making a delivery at Legacy Farms.

1:51 am Sgt. Scott vanRaalten checked and spoke with three individuals on Wedgewood Drive.

Above at the Evergreen Cemetery, a muzzle flash during a 21-gun salute by the Old Guard New England, a group of motorcycle riders who honor veterans at public events. The group repeated the salute three more times today.

May 25, 2014 — This great blue heron in Legacy Farms property on the shore of a former irrigation pond is working his bounty, which is apparently still alive. His next move would have been to maneuver it in such a way to get it into its gullet, but the sight of a large photographer flapping his arms like a bird about to fly, startled the bird, and so he flew a couple of hundred feet away, below.

Miss. Jean Marie Harrington

Miss. Jean Marie Harrington, of Ash Street, Hopkinton, died at home on May 23, 2014. She was born in Framingham on September 11, 1931, the daughter of Daniel and Florence (Kaminski) Harrington. She was a 1950 graduate of Hopkinton High School and a life long resident. For many years she was employed by the former Deerfoot Farms, Southborough, Carlos Restaurant, Ashland and retired from MCI Framingham. She is survived by her brother, William Harrington, her sister, Patricia Byrne, both of Hopkinton, nieces, and nephew, grand nieces and grand nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Daniel Harrington and a niece and nephew and long time companion, Archie Belbusti. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the care of the Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton.

Car Jacking Suspect Arrested After Causing Multiple Crashes on Route 128 Southbound Burlington

May 23, 2014 — Today at 3:15 p.m. Troopers from the State Police Barracks in Danvers and the State Police Barracks Concord responded to reports of a hit and run crash followed by multiple additional crashes along Route 128 Southbound beginning in Peabody and ending in Burlington.

The preliminary report is that the crashes are a result of one male suspect crashing his vehicle, then allegedly carjacking another vehicle and ultimately rolling that vehicle over.

That suspect was arrested trying to flee from the scene of the rollover crash.

The left two lanes of Route 128 Southbound were closed for approximately one hour the area of the Burlington Mall as this incident was investigated.

Troopers were assisted on the scene by the Burlington Police and Fire Departments.

There are no injuries reported in this incident.

UPDATE:

The operator arrested in this incident is identified as, ARTHUR B. CHOATE, 23, of Gloucester, Mass.

CHOATE is charged with:

1. Larceny of a motor vehicle

2. Leaving the scene of a property damage accident

In addition CHOATE will be charged with multiple motor vehicle violations related to the incident.

CHOATE is currently being held at the State Police Barracks in Danvers were he will remain pending bail or his appearance in Peabody District Court.

The circumstances leading up to CHOATE'S initial crash, the larceny of another operator's vehicle and the eventual rollover crash are still under investigation.

Initial investigation suggest that alcohol is NOT a factor in this case.

There was no police pursuit at anytime during this incident.

There were a total of 7 vehicles involved in the various crashes in this matter.

There are no injuries attributed to this incident.

9:02 pm A caller reported a suspicious vehicle with three youths inside of it in a construction area on Connelly Hill Road.

7:18 pm A caller reported a disabled motor vehicle with a woman trying to wave down traffic on Route 495. The State Police were notified and responded.

7:00 pm Officer William Burchard assisted with community policing on Elm Street.

4:23 pm A walk-in from Greystone Lane reported that her mailbox and post had been stolen and the post hole had been filled in. Officer William Burchard responded and wrote a report.

2:27 pm Two callers reported smoke coming from the back of a house on Grove Street. Two officers responded to assist the Fire Department.

1:51 pm Officer Patrick O'Brien assisted a disabled motor vehicle on Pleasant Street.

8:58 am Officer Gregg DeBoer assisted a disabled motor vehicle on West Main Street.

2:51 am Officer Jacob Campbell checked a parked motor vehicle on Wood Street.

12:00 am Officer Linda Higgins checked a motor vehicle that was parked on Loop Road.

7:23 pm A caller reported that a vehicle was speeding up and down Joseph Road. Officer Thomas Griffin responded and spoke with the occupant of the vehicle.

6:42 pm A 911 caller reported that there was a fire on the roof of a building on Price Street. Three officers responded to assist the Fire Department.

6:21 pm The Boston Police Department reported that they located a missing person from Hopkinton.

3:48 pm A motorist reported a large rock in the roadway on Wood Street. Officer Gregg DeBoer checked the area with a negative find.

1:38 pm A motorist reported seeing a motorcycle laying down on the grass with no one around it on Route 495. The State Police were notified.

12:00 pm A walk-in complained about a parked SUV creating a hazard on Walcott Street.

11:14 am Officer Thomas Griffin spoke with the operator of a parked motor vehicle that was causing a road hazard on West Elm Street.

10:10 am The Southborough Police Department was advised of an erratic operator on Cedar Street.

9:21 am A caller reported finding a lost dog on Granite Street. The Bay Bath Humane Society responded on behalf of the Animal Control Officer.

8:23 am Officer Thomas Griffin responded to a two car motor vehicle accident without personal injury on Huckleberry Road.

8:14 am A Price Street resident reported that a vehicle parked on his property and the operator got out and walked around his house for the second time. Officer Patrick O'Brien responded and spoke with the resident.

7:55 am Officer Thomas Griffin assisted a disabled motor vehicle on School Street.

6:32 am Officer Linda Higgins located a mailbox on the side of West Main Street.

6:15 am A motorist reported a box in the middle of the roadway on West Main Street. Officer Jacob Campbell responded and removed the box.

Hopkinton Education Foundation Golf Ball Drop and Balloon Rides

The Hopkinton Education Golf Ball Drop fundraiser will be held Monday, June 2 at 5:30pm at Hopkins Elementary School, with a rain date of June 3. The event will feature hot air balloon rides, weather permitting. The golf ball dropped closest to, or in, the hole wins $1000; furthest from the pin wins $100. HOPKINTON- Weston Nurseries in Hopkinton, Massachusetts welcomes Amanda Clark as their new Garden Center Manager. She will oversee the day to day operations of the Garden Center.
