Ellis Family, Bright Insurance Give to "Excellence"
May 14, 2014 — The Milford Regional Medical Center Foundation officially released news this week of the leadership gift of $175,000 from Bright Insurance Agency, Peter and Janet Ellis, and Steve and Lynn Ellis to Excellence…The Campaign for Milford Regional Medical Center. The gift is part of $17 million the capital campaign has already raised towards a goal of $25 million.
“It is nearly impossible to characterize the value of the relationship Milford Regional Medical Center has enjoyed with Peter and Steve Ellis and their families through these many years,” says John Burns, Chairman of Excellence as well as the Board of Trustees of Milford Regional.
“They are inextricably linked to the growth and stature of our Medical Center, and have played significant roles in helping us raise funds.” Peter Ellis, a Milford Regional Medical Center Board member for many years, helped start the popular and infinitely successful Golf Classic and Janet is a former member of the Medical Center’s Mélange committee and a current member of the Medical Center’s Auxiliary. Steve Ellis is a member of the Medical Center’s Board of Trustees, chair of the Excellence Major Gift committee for individuals and a member of the Golf Classic committee. His wife, Lynn, a long-time Mélange Gala committee member, recently co-chaired the Excellence Gratitude event featuring the Pointer Sisters.
For more than 30 years, the Ellis family has
operated the Bright Insurance Agency in Milford, employing a
dedicated customer service philosophy that mirrors their commitment
to MRMC, and resonates with the people of Milford. The full-service
agency specializes in automobile, home, life and health insurance.

Practice Makes Perfect
May 14, 2014 — Trooper Matt Hannigan of the Massachusetts State Police K-9 Section gives K-9 Trainee, Flash, a sniff of his harness as K-9 Training Supervisor Sgt. James Bigelow looks on at Hopkinton State Park this morning. Sgt. Bigelow walked a meandering pathway for Flash to track. In addition to Sgt. Bigelow's scent, Flash can also detect disturbed areas of soil where an individual has walked, and can distinguish from a multitude of scents, as he proved while walking undistracted past the dumpster at the Main Beach area. Below, Flash just got up from a prone position, which he takes when he discovers a target object, at which time he gets a special treat.
K-9 officers and their dogs form special bonds, much
like humans do with one another. A powerful example,
one that went viral, was a story written by Trooper
Christopher Coscia when his German shepherd, Dante,
became ill and needed to be put to sleep.

Hopkinton Receives Standard and Poor’s AAA Bond Rating Status The Town is most pleased to announce that on May 9, 2014, Standard and Poor’s assigned a AAA rating to its General Obligation Bonds. This upgrades the Town from a AA+ rating to the highest possible municipal bond rating. The new rating will allow the Town to borrow or bond at lower interest rates. “This is great milestone for the town. The AAA rating is the culmination of fiscal discipline that was started long ago, as well as management policies aided by the Charter*. Our town boards and committees have dedicated countless hours, as have our professional staff. Volunteers, staff, residents and businesses should take pride in this achievement,” said John Mosher, Chair of the Board of Selectmen. Standard and Poor’s AAA rating is based on the Town’s very strong economy, strong budgetary flexibility, strong budgetary performance, stable revenue profile, very strong liquidity, strong management conditions and very strong debt and contingent liability profile. -Press Release from Town Manager * Reprise of caricatures of Charter Commission members by Ashley Jackson. |

State Police make Arrest after Foot Pursuit and
Seize Illegally Possessed Firearm in Springfield
May
12, 2014 — This afternoon at approximately 1:35 p.m.,
troopers from the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section
(VFAS) in Springfield had information that a male
subject driving a gray Honda Accord on Union Street in
Springfield was in unlawful possession of a firearm.
Trooper Carlos Rivera of the VFAS Unit quickly found the
suspected vehicle and called for another Trooper before
making any
inquiry of the driver. The driver of the Honda,
later identified as JUSTIN JOHNS, 23, of Springfield,
was observed to pull over and stop in front of an
apartment on School Street. Trooper Robert Church
of the Springfield Barracks then arrived to assist
Trooper Rivera. JOHNS exited the Honda as the
Troopers approached. After observing the Troopers,
and being asked to speak with them, JOHNS fled on foot.
Within approximately 20 yards of running, JOHNS
discarded a revolver, later found to be a Sentinel 22
caliber. Trooper Church along with two ATF agents,
that stopped to assist, continued chase until
apprehending JOHNS in the parking lot of the Milton
Bradley School, located at corner of Maple and Union
Streets. JOHNS is not licensed to carry a firearm.
JOHNS was placed under arrest and brought to the
Springfield Barracks for booking. JOHNS was held on

Brush Fire at Echo Lake May 12, 2014 — This home in the vicinity of 300 Hayden Rowe Street is becoming enveloped by smoke from a nearby brush fire at Echo Lake in Hopkinton. Hopkinton committed three brush trucks as well as a tanker and an engine. Milford has also sent a brush truck to assist. At this time (4:24 pm), Firefighters on scene as well as Fire Chief Ken Clark are requesting two additional companies. They are estimating the area burning to be over two acres. Echo Lake is a water supply largely in Hopkinton for Milford Water Company, which supplies the Town of Milford, and is off-limits to recreation. Upon the arrival of firefighters, a group of youths was seen fleeing the area of the fire, which is believed to have been started by a campfire. Eventually, the youths came out of the woods, one carrying beer, and hopped into a pickup truck that was partially blocking the entrance to the access road for the Echo Lake Dam. UPDATE: Fire units cleared from the woods at 5:58 pm.
