Ellis Family, Bright Insurance Give to "Excellence"

May 14, 2014 — The Milford Regional Medical Center Foundation officially released news this week of the leadership gift of $175,000 from Bright Insurance Agency, Peter and Janet Ellis, and Steve and Lynn Ellis to Excellence…The Campaign for Milford Regional Medical Center. The gift is part of $17 million the capital campaign has already raised towards a goal of $25 million.

 “It is nearly impossible to characterize the value of the relationship Milford Regional Medical Center has enjoyed with Peter and Steve Ellis and their families through these many years,” says John Burns, Chairman of Excellence as well as the Board of Trustees of Milford Regional.

“They are inextricably linked to the growth and stature of our Medical Center, and have played significant roles in helping us raise funds.” Peter Ellis, a Milford Regional Medical Center Board member for many years, helped start the popular and infinitely successful Golf Classic and Janet is a former member of the Medical Center’s Mélange committee and a current member of the Medical Center’s Auxiliary. Steve Ellis is a member of the Medical Center’s Board of Trustees, chair of the Excellence Major Gift committee for individuals and a member of the Golf Classic committee. His wife, Lynn, a long-time Mélange Gala committee member, recently co-chaired the Excellence Gratitude event featuring the Pointer Sisters.

Excellence is supporting a major capital initiative that will result in a new emergency department, intensive care unit and private patient rooms. The new two story structure will more than double the size of the current ED from 30 to 52 private treatment rooms, increase the number of patient rooms in the ICU from 10 to 16 expanding their size to accommodate the latest technology, and add a 24-bed private room unit with the intent to convert all hospital patient rooms to private.

Hopkinton Receives Standard and Poor’s AAA Bond Rating Status

The Town is most pleased to announce that on May 9, 2014, Standard and Poor’s assigned a AAA rating to its General Obligation Bonds. This upgrades the Town from a AA+ rating to the highest possible municipal bond rating. The new rating will allow the Town to borrow or bond at lower interest rates. 

“This is great milestone for the town.  The AAA rating is the culmination of fiscal discipline that was started long ago, as well as management policies aided by the Charter*.  Our town boards and committees have dedicated countless hours, as have our professional staff. HOPKINTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE STRATEGIC PLAN PUBLIC FORUM

The Hopkinton School Committee in conjunction with the Superintendent, Steering Committee and Administrative Team has developed a new 5-year Strategic Plan to guide the work of the district.  We are thankful for all of the public input gathered through public forums and survey data and are ready to share the results.  The following dates have been selected to provide opportunity for public comment prior to the School Committee’s vote to accept the plan.  We encourage you to attend so that your voice can be heard.

State Police make Arrest after Foot Pursuit and Seize Illegally Possessed Firearm in Springfield

May 12, 2014 — This afternoon at approximately 1:35 p.m., troopers from the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (VFAS) in Springfield had information that a male subject driving a gray Honda Accord on Union Street in Springfield was in unlawful possession of a firearm.

Trooper Carlos Rivera of the VFAS Unit quickly found the suspected vehicle and called for another Trooper before making any inquiry of the driver.  The driver of the Honda, later identified as JUSTIN JOHNS, 23, of Springfield, was observed to pull over and stop in front of an apartment on School Street.  Trooper Robert Church of the Springfield Barracks then arrived to assist Trooper Rivera.  JOHNS exited the Honda as the Troopers approached.  After observing the Troopers, and being asked to speak with them, JOHNS fled on foot.

Within approximately 20 yards of running, JOHNS discarded a revolver, later found to be a Sentinel 22 caliber.  Trooper Church along with two ATF agents, that stopped to assist, continued chase until apprehending JOHNS in the parking lot of the Milton Bradley School, located at corner of Maple and Union Streets.  JOHNS is not licensed to carry a firearm.

JOHNS was placed under arrest and brought to the Springfield Barracks for booking. JOHNS was held on $10,000 bail and will be brought tomorrow to Springfield District Court to be arraigned on the following offenses:

1)      Carry firearm without a license

2)      Possession of ammunition without FID card

3)      Carry firearm with ammunition, Unlawful

4)      Deface firearm serial number

5)      Disturbing the peace

6)      Operate a motor vehicle with license revoked

Six-Car Crash on 495 SB Plainville - One Fatality, Five Serious Injuries

Troopers from the State Police Barracks in Foxboro are currently on the scene of a 6-car crash on Route 495 southbound south of exit #14 in Plainville where one person has died, and 5 were others seriously injured.

Just prior to the crash troopers from the barracks were responding to reports of a vehicle traveling the wrong way on route 495 southbound between exit #13 and #14.

The Massachusetts State Police has multiple assets on the scene to include: troopers from the Foxboro Barracks, Troop H Investigators, Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Service Section, and Troop H Headquarters.  

Additionally, the Foxboro, Wrentham and Plainville Fire Departments are at the scene.  

Multiple Car Crash 495 SB Plainville

 Final UPDATE:

The person who died in this crash has been identified as, TONY Q. DANG, 39 of Randolph, Mass. DANG was operating a 2006 Honda Accord.

The other persons and vehicles involved in this case are as follows:

1. ABRAHAM E. REAY, 31 of Attleboro, Mass, was operating a 2012 Honda Accord. REAY was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. REAY’S passenger STACY D. REAY, 38 of Attleboro, Mass. was not injured.

2. CHRISTINE J. NOLDER, 45, of Bridgewater, Mass, was operating a 2010 Toyota Highlander. NOLDER was not injured. NOLDER’S passenger NANCY A. HANLEY, 51 of Bridgewater, Mass was not injured.

3. JUSTIN T. DANIELS, 24, of Dudley, Mass was operating a 2005 Toyota Camry. DANIELS was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. There were no passengers in DANIELS’ car.

4. MARIA COSTA, 28, of Providence, RI was operating a 2004 Isuzu Rodeo. COSTA was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injures. There were no passengers in COSTA’S car.

5. DARRELL R. RAMOS, 30 , of New Bedford, Mass was operating a 2012 Nissan Maxima. RAMOS was not injured.

6. BRAIN PAULSEN, 54, of Monument Beach, Mass was operating a 2008 Toyota Highlander. PAULSEN was not injured.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan Announces Charges in Lowell and Malden Arson Fires
That Displaced Residents and Caused Injuries to Responding Firefighters

WOBURN- May 11, 2014 — Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced today that charges have been brought against a Malden man and a Lowell man in separate, and unrelated, arson fires that occurred in those cities this week.

"We allege that these defendants by their actions damaged property and displaced families," District Attorney Ryan said. "More importantly, they put residents, some of them neighbors, and firefighters who responded at risk of serious injury. Their behavior, which we allege was intentional, endangered people in their homes and firefighters who put themselves in harm's way to protect us. We commend the quick and thorough work of the Malden and Lowell police departments and the Massachusetts State Police to identify and apprehend suspects in these matters."

Namit Thapa, 28, of Malden, was taken into custody by Malden police yesterday without incident. He has been charged with arson and disorderly conduct in the burning of his own residence that caused injuries to two firefighters who responded.

It is expected that he will be arraigned in Malden District Court on Monday.

According to authorities, on May 9, at approximately 5:30am, they received a report of a fire at a multi-unit home located at 63 Converse Avenue. When officers arrived, they found an active fire scene and numerous residents outside of the building. Since the defendant was not outside the building with the other residents, firefighters attempted to locate him inside the building, not knowing that he had already left the area. The 3-alarm fire displaced seven people. In addition to the Malden Police and Fire Departments, fire companies from Melrose, Everett, Medford, and Saugus responded and assisted. Two firefighters, one from Malden and one from Saugus, were treated at area hospitals and released.

During the course of the investigation into the cause of this fire, a tip to Malden police allegedly led them to investigate and subsequently charge this defendant.

On Friday, Andres Ortiz-Arroyo, 24, of Lowell, was arraigned in Lowell District Court on arson charges (two counts) for the burning of a business and a nearby residence in Lowell on May 7. He is being held pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Friday, May 16.

In that matter, authorities allege that on May 7 at approximately 12:40am, they responded to a business at 604 Central Street for the report of a fire. When they arrived, they observed an active fire to the left side of the building. Due to the hour, there was no one inside the building. Shortly thereafter, at 1:45am, police were then called to a nearby two-family home at 49 Wamesit Street. When they arrived at that location, they discovered another active fire, with flames beginning to engulf the roof and eave area of the house. Officers located several residents inside and assisted them out of the home, and one was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Due to the close proximity of the buildings, residents of two adjacent homes had to be evacuated as well.

Through their investigation, it is alleged that police learned that this defendant started a fire by lighting trash in the alley between 604 and 602 Central Street, which then spread to the building. As well, it is alleged that the defendant similarly lit a trash fire in an alley next to the Wamesit Street residence which spread to that home. The residence fire displaced two families.

These charges are allegations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

She is survived by her children Shelia Matejko of Shrewsbury, David Deiana of Milford, and Helen “Cookie” Ware, Sharon Schiloski , Terri Kenney, Richard Deiana and William Deiana, all of Hopkinton.

She also leaves 25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and four great great-grandchildren. She is pre-deceased by her son Francis “Manny” Deiana and her grandson Kevin Ware.

The funeral will be Wednesday, May 14 at 9:00 a.m. from the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church St.  A funeral Mass will celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church at 10 a.m.  Calling hours at the funeral  home will be Tuesday May 13 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at the family’s convenience.
