A moment of silence for Boston

Today, at 2:49 p.m. ET, President Obama will observe a moment of silence to mark the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing.

The President also released a statement this morning on the tragedy:

A year ago, tragedy struck at the 117th Boston Marathon. Four innocent people were killed that week, and hundreds more were wounded. Today, we remember Krystle Campbell, Lingzi Lu, Martin Richard, and Sean Collier. And we send our thoughts and prayers to those still struggling to recover.

We also know that the most vivid images from that day were not of smoke and chaos, but of compassion, kindness and strength: A man in a cowboy hat helping a wounded stranger out of harm's way; runners embracing loved ones, and each other; an EMT carrying a spectator to safety. Today, we recognize the incredible courage and leadership of so many Bostonians in the wake of unspeakable tragedy. And we offer our deepest gratitude to the courageous firefighters, police officers, medical professionals, runners and spectators who, in an instant, displayed the spirit Boston was built on -- perseverance, freedom and love.

REMINDER FOR HOPKINTON DOG OWNERS - and LATE FEE AMNESTY THROUGH APRIL

Any dogs six months or older that are owned or kept by Hopkinton residents must be licensed by April 1 or within 30 days upon moving to town. (Hopkinton By-law Chapter 62). Late fee amnesty is being offered for April, 2014.

Licenses may be obtained in person or by returning the mail-in form included with the annual street listing or available on the Town Clerk’s web site – www.hopkintonma.gov .
The animal control officer will begin issuing citations to all unlicensed dog owners May 1, 2014. At that time owners will be responsible for license fee, late fee and citation fee. William J. Proctor, Hopkinton Animal Control

Kudos From the Green

The Sustainable Green Committee would like to give a shout out to all the people in Hopkinton who helped clean up the town on Saturday - especially the Cub Scouts who cleaned up the school and the Girl Scouts who cleaned up Sandy Beach. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the Girl Scouts who went directly to the beach. We'd also like to thank Harvey's who so generously donated the dumpsters and Colella's who allowed us to hang our banner.

Friends Give $5,000 to Benefit the

Renovation and Expansion of Hopkinton Public Library

Barbara Beale, Treasurer of the Friends of the Library, presents a $5,000 check to the Hopkinton Public Library Foundation’s Chairperson Laura Barry, towards the Library renovation & expansion project.  In recognition of their gift, the Staff Room in the new Library will be named for the Friends. 

Fundraising for the Library received a boost from the Friends of the Hopkinton Public Library just prior to the Library funding vote at the May 5 Town Meeting and the May 19 Town Election.  With the Friends’ gift of $5,000, the amount raised by 1000 Homes for Hopkinton Library is now $280,000.  In recognition of their gift, the Staff Room in the new Library will be named for the Friends. 

“The Friends of the Hopkinton Public Library are thrilled to make this gift and to recognize the library staff for the incredible service they provide to the Town given the condition of the antique library building,” says Friends President Beth Mezitt.  “The Friends look forward to the 2016 opening of a Hopkinton Public Library befitting our times, our Town and our population, and encourage others to support and give generously to the renovation and expansion of this essential community resource.” 

 “With the Friends’ generous gift, the Foundation has raised $280,000 in gifts and pledges since launching its 1000 Homes for Hopkinton Library challenge in October,” says Laura Barry, Chair of the Hopkinton Public Library Foundation.  “The Friends join over 140 individuals, families and local groups giving to this incredible community project – one which benefits every resident of Hopkinton, from infant to senior, as well as the Town as whole.”

My name is June Harris. I live at 185 Saddle Hill Road in Hopkinton with my two sons, Nicholas Temple, age 15 and Hunter Temple, age 14. I have had the honor and pleasure to serve as a member of the Board of Library Trustees for the past two years. Essentially, what the Library Trustees do is work together to support the Director and her Staff. I have also been excited to be part of the process for a renovation and expansion of our existing library. In my two years of service to the library I have come to learn we have a fabulous Director who, along with her amazing staff, work tirelessly to bring the best publications, services and programs to our community. But I have also come to see they are working with limited and inadequate resources. Our current library leaves no space for a growing collection, no space for study, no space for public meetings or programs. There are seventeen steps to reach the children’s room on the second floor and it is totally inaccessible to the handicapped.

Moreover, the building infrastructure is in need of major, costly repair. Right now we as a Town have an incredible opportunity to build a state of the art facility which will serve our community for years and years to come. The Town of Hopkinton has been awarded a Library Construction grant of $4.5 million dollars from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. In order to receive this grant, we need to vote the remaining funds for the project. Some of you may have heard of 1000 Homes for Hopkinton Library. Did you know this campaign has raised $275,000 in private funds in just four months? This campaign is on fire and has a goal of raising one million dollars over the next four years. This private money will significantly reduce the amount our Town will need to raise in taxes for our new library. So, what is the Town’s part? The Town’s part to build a 21st Century library for our Town is estimated to be $95 for the average Hopkinton household (that is less than $8 per month) for the first year and decreasing each year over the life of the 20 year bond. This represents a small increase in our annual taxes in order to give our community the library it deserves. Please plan to attend the Annual Town Meeting on Monday, May 5, 2014 and vote “YES” to renovate and expand our library.

To the Editor:

As a Hopkinton resident and parent, I’d like to ask you to vote in favor of the renovation and expansion of the Library at Town Meeting on May 5, and Town Election on May 19. While the Library is a true a gem for everyone in the community, and there are not enough words to praise its knowledgeable and wonderful staff—it needs help.

The renovation and expansion is necessary. It would allow for several much needed improvements, such as parking. Anyone who has navigated the current street parking (especially in winter) with children in tow knows it is not easy or safe.

The renovation and expansion will also provide much needed space. The Children’s Room makes the best of its tight quarters, but a “yes” vote would allow room for more children’s books, an actual space for story time, and a proper Young Adult section as well. Not to mention meeting space, study rooms and multi-use areas for people of all ages in the community.

Finally, the expansion and renovation would allow the Library to keep pace with current technology with more computers and technology classrooms.

The Library truly is the anchor of our community, but it needs our help. Please vote in favor of the renovation and expansion of the library at Town Meeting on May 5, and Town Election on May 19..
