Congratulations to the Hopkinton Girls 8th Grade Travel Team for winning the Division 2 State Basketball Championship! The Hillers were strong in the preliminary round of the tournament by trouncing Dartmouth 63-26, then defeating Sandwich 56-35. In the state semi-final game, the Hiller girls shook off a slow start but really came to life in the 2nd half as they beat Charlton 42-21. In the Finals, Hopkinton was matched up against Martha's Vineyard, who were a perfect 17-0 in the Cape Cod League. The Hillers overcame a 2-point halftime deficit and again played a very strong second half, especially defensively, to win 36-26 and capture the state title. The Hopkinton girls enjoyed a successful regular season, winning the Metrowest Division 2 Central regular season crown, which helped them earn a berth in the states. All season long, the Hillers played unselfishly and had balanced scoring. The girls finished their youth travel basketball careers by amassing an impressive 18-5 record. A special thanks to Mary Korbey and Don Keavany who have been fantastic coaches over the years.  ~ Contributed by Kevin Murphy

by John Cardillo

March 24, 2014 — The Hopkinton Hiller Cheerleaders put it all together today and came in Second Place in the New England “Spirit” Cheer Championship. This is the highest High School sponsored competition in New England. The very best come to this competition from all over New England’s six States. Hopkinton wasn’t intimidated and did not withdraw from the challenge. This fantastic group of young women went out on the mat today and arguably performed their best routine of the year.

There is one team member (leader) who, without her guidance and wisdom, this would be not have been possible. Melissa Zwang, Hopkinton Hiller Cheer head coach, has been the guiding force behind the success of this team for nearly a decade. This is only the second time Hiller Cheer has been to The New England Spirit Cheer Competition (last year was the first) and given the fact that they placed in only their second year, is a true testament to Melissa’s commitment to athletic excellence and her unwavering dedication to sportsmanship and character. Congratulations to Hopkinton Hiller Cheerleaders you make your school AND town proud!!"

Tractor Trailer vs. Car on Route 495
Brushfire follows after return to HQ

March 23, 2014 — At 6:43 pm this evening, Hopkinton Police and Fire responded to the request of Mass State Police regarding the collision of a tractor trailer (arrow in photo) and a passenger vehicle on Route 495 Northbound, just past the Mass Pike exit. The female driver was the sole occupant, and was evaluated by Hopkinton Fire Ambulance and released after refusing a ride to the hospital.  The truck's tires bored into the passenger side of the vehicle before the vehicle became free and slid sideways down the road and across three lanes, ending up against the guardrail in the passing lane facing the wrong way.
Apparently connected, but without the source being determined, the Fire Department returned to quarters 40 minutes later only to be called to the scene again, but for a brush fire this time. They had it under control in 20 minutes.

Hopkinton Aluminum Warriors Make Their Mark

Hopkinton High Robotics Team (from left to right):  Rish Shandra, Mike diBenedetto (Programmer),

Michelle Heeney, Hunter Phipps, Blake Dobay, Michael McFarland (teacher/mentor),

Mercedes Lahaie, Brent Heavey (coach), Robert Lahaie (Driver/Builder), Kyle Heavey, Andre LeBlanc

March 23, 2014 — The Hopkinton Robotics team took on a new challenge this year by moving up from the FIRST Tech Challenge last year, and building the more complicated robots to compete in FIRST Robotics Challenge competition. The challenge was to build a robot that could pick up and shoot a 24 inch ball through and over 7 foot high targets while being pushed and pounded by other opposing robots trying to complete the same task.

Hopkinton’s team was called the Aluminum Warriors. As a rookie team, Hopkinton had a tough day one on Friday and they finished in 31st place out of 39 teams competing. However, on the last bout on Friday Hopkinton finished strong and Robert Lahaie, the Hopkinton driver, demonstrated to other competitors that Hopkinton could play aggressive defense and that earned their robot some credibility with the other teams.

On day two, Hopkinton showed much better, winning 2 of 3 bouts with strong defense. Robert was able to shut down the best robot in the competition from scoring, other teams noticed. The top 8 teams in the competition each go on to select two “Alliance Partners” to join their team. On their very last pick the top team selected Hopkinton’s Aluminum Warriors to lead the defense for their Alliance.

This new red team alliance competed great through the quarter finals and semi-finals racking up points on the competition. Hopkinton’s robot would play aggressive defense, while the other 2 robots in the red alliance loaded up on points. It was a great combination. The master of ceremonies commented on many occasions throughout the day that the Aluminum Warriors from Hopkinton were making great defensive plays to stop other teams' robots from scoring. The red alliance moved up and made it to the final round. It was best 2 out of 3 to win the championship.

Hopkinton, in the red alliance, easily won the first bout and they looked like they were in good shape to take it all. In bout number 2, one of the other alliance members had a penalty that cost the red alliance the win. Ready to battle on, Hopkinton moved to the final match of the day, winner takes all. Hopkinton made some good moves on defense, but one of the throwing arms on their alliance partner's robot broke during the competition and became disabled. The two remaining robots fought valiantly, but in the end after a very exciting match, Hopkinton’s red alliance team lost with a very close score of 118 to 120 to the blue alliance.

For their rookie year in FIRST Robotics Competition, our Hopkinton Aluminum Warriors finished with a second place trophy. Hopkinton’s team also won the Imagery Award for having the best robot and team with attractiveness in engineering and outstanding visual aesthetic integration from the machine to team appearance. Congratulations to the Hopkinton Robotics Team! ~ Contributed Content

On Thursday, Friday & Saturday (March 27th, 28th & 29th), Hopkinton Country Club will be hosting the “local Hopkinton-Area signing” of the Boston Marathon’s “America 4 Boston” Prayer Canvas. It is all part of creating a national prayer canvas that celebrates peace and the goodness of the human spirit. In fact, on March 12th, the canvas was signed by members of Congress to celebrate the spirit of the event.

Hopkinton Country Club has taken this opportunity to invite anyone in the local Hopkinton area (including surrounding towns) to come by the club and sign the canvas to contribute to the effort. Hopkinton Country Club will schedule signing hours of 8am-8pm Thursday & Friday, March 27th & 28th and from 8am – 4pm on Saturday, March 29th.

Tim Gordon, Manager of Hopkinton Country Club, said, “We are so proud to be hosting the Hopkinton-area signing of the prayer canvas. Hopkinton Selectman Endorsed for Senate Run by State Convention

March 23, 2014 — According to reports coming from the Massachusetts State Republican Convention attendees, Hopkinton Selectman Brian Herr received the party's nod for his candidacy for the U. S. Senate from Massachusetts. Other Republicans, we are informed, may run on nomination  papers, but not as Republicans on the ballot.

Mr. Herr, a Hopkinton Selectman, resides in Hopkinton with his wife, Mary Murphy, and their five children. Mr. Herr's last run for office outside of the Town offices he has held, which includes Hopkinton Planning Board, was a run against Marty Lamb for the Republican nomination for the Congressional seat held by Jim McGovern, in which Lamb won the convention.

Inasmuch as Charlie Baker for Governor and Brian Herr for the US Senate are the only candidates to have received 15% or more of the convention's votes, we are further informed that there will be no primary for the Republican party in Massachusetts.

According to the state's website, the last day for submitting nomination papers is May 6, 2014.

From Ken Weismantel:

"This was a big  day  for the  Hopkinton delegation with the nomination of  Brian Herr for US  Senate.

"I addressed the convention to second  his nomination.

"The  Hopkinton Delegation voted 100% to support the nomination of Charlie Baker."
