PLANS ANNOUNCED FOR BOSTON MARATHON TRIBUTE

Mayor, Governor to co-host event honoring those affected by 2013 events

BOSTON – February 13, 2014 — The Boston Athletic Association announced today plans for an official tribute event to mark the one year anniversary of April 15, 2013. The event, hosted jointly by Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Governor Deval L. Patrick in coordination with One Fund Boston will be held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston on April 15, 2014.

“On April 15, we recall the courage, compassion, and commitment of our great city and its people,” said Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh. “Through this event, Boston again stands as one: paying tribute to all those affected by last year’s events and once again showing the world that Boston’s spirit of resiliency lives on.”

“As a community, we were put to the ultimate test by the events at last year’s Boston Marathon,” said Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick. “But we rose to the occasion: turning to each other, rather than against and showing the world what a strong community looks like. Though we all had our lives affected in profoundly different ways, this Tribute will show the world again that we stand as one.”

The tribute will honor those affected by last year’s events, including those who lost their lives, survivors and first responders. Featured at the event will be speakers representing families of those affected, medical staff who treated patients, responding government agencies and a host of civic leaders. The event will conclude with a flag-raising ceremony and brief moment of silence.

“We are humbled to participate in this tribute on behalf of the entire Marathon community,” said Tom Grilk, executive director of the Boston Athletic Association. “We continue to express our deepest gratitude to all those who courageously reacted to help save lives. And we remain committed to showing our support and encouragement for those that were injured or lost a loved one. What’s clear is that the bravery and tenacity exhibited in the moments following last year’s events are attributes that continue to define our community today. That’s what we seek to honor at this event.”

Because of space restrictions, access to the Hynes Convention Center will be by invitation only. More details on the event, including a list of speakers and other program elements, logistics for the public, and media access will be released at a later date. Photo, Eric Haynes, Governor's Office.

Accused Southborough Child Rapist Captured in New York

Last night, after the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (VFAS) and Southborough police developed information on the whereabouts of an accused child rapist, New York troopers arrested the suspect at an Econo Lodge in Albany.

ROBERT CERQUA, 58, of Southborough, was taken into custody in a hotel room by nine troopers assigned to the New York State Police Special Investigations Unit. CERQUA is charged on a warrant with two counts of aggravated rape of a child, rape, indecent assault and battery on a child over 14, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, and dissemination of obscene material to a juvenile. Evidence suggests CERQUA raped a girl over an eight year period.

On Monday afternoon, the State Police VFAS, working with the Framingham Police Street Crimes Unit, responded to an alert from Southborough Police asking officers to be on the lookout for CERQUA. VFAS troopers and Framingham officers checked local area hotels and conducted multiple interviews. As a result, they developed information suggesting CERQUA was in a certain area of Albany. VFAS troopers contacted New York State Police, and NYSP troopers on Monday night located CERQUA’s vehicle outside the Econo Lodge. They established a perimeter and surveillance while awaiting completion of an arrest warrant. The arrest was made shortly before midnight.

Woman Charged with OUI After Striking State Police Cruiser on Pike

February 11, 2014 — Trooper Mark Lombardi, whose cruiser was struck by a suspected drunk driver on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Boston last night, was treated at Boston Medical Center and released. The driver who struck his cruiser, ANN LYN KING, 45, of Worcester, was charged with operating under the influence of liquor and several motor vehicle violations.

The trooper called the Weston Barracks himself to report the crash and request EMS. At the time of the crash, the trooper was in position to protect a maintenance crew performing light pole inspections on the Turnpike in Brighton, just over the Newton line.

Boston Strong – Bossart Strong

Hopkinton woman seeks support for running Boston

On January 27, 24-year-old Kevin Bossart from Quincy, Ma suffered from a cardiac arrest due to a pre-existing heart condition that left him in a coma for a few days. Kevin was walking into the train station on his way to work when the attack occurred. Almost immediately, MTBA employee Tomas Gonzales came to Kev’s rescue. Kevin was given CPR, which he did not respond to for a few hours.

Kevin’s attack left him in critical condition; with all the odds pointed against him, he miraculously pulled through. Kevin woke up on his own Wednesday, February 29th leaving friends, family, and a large medical staff inspired by his strength and optimism. It has been reported that he will make a full neurological and physical recovery.

Although Kevin’s road to recovery will be long and difficult, it will be lit with the positive energy, good vibes, and love from his peers. This year, Rachel Dobinski, will be running The Boston Marathon to raise money for Kevin. They both met attending Southern New Hampshire University and have remained close every since.

All money donated to the Boston Strong – Bossart Strong cause will go directly to Kevin and his family to ease some of the financial burden this event has caused.

Planning Board to Hold Hearing Tonight on 42 Main Street Plan

Above, a view from Main Street, and below, a view from Walcott Street.

February 10, 2014 — Hopkinton residents Kathy and Greg Mazur, doing business as MNR Realty LLC, have purchased the land the former Central House was located on, 42 Main Street, as well as 5 and 7 Walcott Street, and will present plans for a new building at a Public Hearing before the Planning Board this evening. Although the property is zoned for three stories, the proposed 19,000(+) square foot building will be two stories and will house retail, office and restaurant uses. About 6,400 square feet of the total will be dedicated to utility uses in the basement.

Current zoning allows a builder to build 5' from the edge of the curb, but this building will be set back a bit, about 25' from the curb with a welcoming courtyard.

According to materials submitted to the Planning Board, the garage at 5 Walcott Street will be repurposed as a retail location (after a small addition), and the house at 7 Walcott Street will be demolished for parking spaces.

They expect between 40-50 employees between the restaurant and retail spaces. They will provide 40 parking spaces on site.

The Public Hearing begins at 7:45 pm in Room 211 of Town Hall.
