A Celebration of Cuisine and Cultures at Fay School in Southborough

February 7, 2014 Baklava. Jerk Chicken. Tacos al pastor. Thai tea. sushi. Roast turkey and mashed potatoes. Blinis. Fried plantains. Italian meatballs. Pierogi. Dulce de leche. Are you hungry yet?

Fay community members enjoyed yet another fun and delicious Taste of Nations event on February 1- an annual celebration where students and families cook and share dished from the many cultures that make up the Fay community.

Kitchens around the Fay campus sprang into action early in the afternoon, as teams of students chopped vegetables, mixed batters, seasoned chicken, made dumplings, and rolled sushi. Local families, faculty, and staff also hosted student groups in their homes for cooking adventures.

That evening, flags of many nations festooned Harlow Gym, and the evening began as Upper School students shared blessings in the languages that reflected their cultural heritage, including Russian, Kiswahili, Thai, Spanish, Mandarin, and Korean.

Then, hundreds of people milled about from table to table, enjoying the tasty treats and sharing stories. Always a highlight of the school year, the event was a lively celebration of Fay’s diverse heritage- and odds are good that there are more than a few Fay community members who are already planning next year’s menu!

Story and picture by Erin Sullivan.

Fay School is an independent co-educational school 25 miles from Boston serving students in Pre-Kindergarten through grade nine, with an optional boarding program in grades seven through nine. Established in 1866, Fay is the oldest junior boarding school in the country. It currently enrolls students from seventeen countries and throughout the United States.

Courtyard Project Progresses

by Muriel Kramer

February 7, 2014 — The School Committee last night voted to accept gifts totaling $58,595.59 for the “Sky’s the Limit” Courtyard project at the Middle School. The bulk of the donations are in Shayne Desroches memory; Shayne died tragically in a bike accident involving a car this past September. Shayne’s mom, Amanda, has donated $25,000 to the project to honor Shayne’s memory, and others have donated a total of $16,200.59 in his memory.

Ruth Pagliuca, a project manager in real life, was on hand to give a brief update; she signed on to the project to help earlier last year after hearing MS Assistant Principal Maryellen Grady’s vision for the currently unused space in the center of the MS buildings. The project is intended to make outdoor learning space available and accessible to the whole community; an area roughly the size of ten classrooms sits unused in the center of the MS campus. The space was made inaccessible when an addition to the building connected two wings and closed it off; the space could previously only be accessed through a boy’s bathroom.

Pagliuca, said of Grady, “she’s been an amazing evangelist for this project”. Grady’s vision includes gardens, performance space and outdoor classrooms and was projected to cost approximately $200,000 to complete. Many residents like Pagliuca are donating their real world expertise to make this project a reality; the layout was designed by local architect Tom Dawson. “We are moving ahead, transforming this unused courtyard into a very nice space.” Anyone wishing to contribute time, ideas, or support can contact Maryellen Grady at the MS, 508-497-9830.

The SC also accepted a gift from EMC, a long time generous supporter of Hopkinton Public Schools; according to Superintendent Cathy Macleod, EMC has been supporting the robotics program since 2002 and this year donated $2,500 for the program.

The team responsible for working to gain accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) for the preschool program, were on hand to discuss the process and earn some much deserved recognition for the successful effort.

From NAEYC’s website, ”There are ten program standards, with specific criteria attached to each, that programs must meet in order to achieve NAEYC Accreditation. The framework of the standards and criteria focus on best practices in the field and the benefits to stakeholders in early childhood education. There are four groups of early childhood education stakeholders: children, teachers, family and community partners, and the program administration.

Each of the ten standards falls under a category according to the early childhood education stakeholder.  … the majority of the standards focus on children–the most important stakeholders. The remainder of the ten standards focus on other stakeholders and the programmatic structure they build to support quality. “

Director of student services Marijane Hackett enthusiastically thanked all who worked to achieve the accreditation and reported that the program had earned high marks in every category; the staff at the preschool initiated the effort ahead of any mandate that may come from the state.  She acknowledged that eventually grant monies from the state will likely be tied to accreditation, so this positions Hopkinton very well for the future.

“Kudos to the team because it was all worth it.”

Bygone Era

February 7, 2014 — This steamroller, the vestige of a bygone era, one in which the young men who operated it have left behind generations of their descendants, wears a blanket of snow during Wednesday's storm outside of the DPW facility on Wood Street. The bleakness of winter makes the photo, although it is in color, appear to be black and white.
